This is a solid video, but I would add, be careful with any coatings on the windshield. I have tried spray waxes, and they can cause fogging, wiper skipping or other problems over time. I would primarily use Rain-X or another glass specific coating for any windshield treatment. Don't take chances with your visibility in weather or especially nighttime weather situations.

Buffing is the key to everything when cleaning, waxing etc...great tip! Also seeing all that gunk come off the glass with the clay bar was quite eye opening. Just goes to show how important that step is before applying a ceramic coating. When all thatbis left behind, it causes the ceramics to fail. That was crazy to see all that come off.

Exactly! And the car wash already washed, and the glass cleaned again with a glass cleaner. And the claybar still pulled dirt and grime after all that!

Worked for a detail shop many years ago. I'll start by saying we didnt always utilize the best methods but, when it came to cleaning glass, we used white cotton terry towels, one damp and one dry. The car had been washed by this time as well but we never used chemicals.

Thanks for the great tips. Fortunately I am already doing them. One other tip. I use a bucket of clean water with a little dish soap in it. Wring out the rag and wash away all the dirt. Then use a dry cloth to buff dry. Also, unless your windows are filthy, use the Mr Clean sponge for the outside to save your clay bar for your car paint. Dish soap will cut through most grime. Also, I use it for home window cleaning. A little dish soap goes a long way.

Hey Pan I have always struggled with cleaning the interior windshield cause it seems to streak like crazy. Until I found out about magic eraser sponges on the inside windshield. It cuts through all the film and grime that collects on the windshield (from the dash, and air con etc). You have to go back and use regular streak free cleaner, but it pretty much guarantees a spotless interior windshield in 2 steps. Tip: Lay down some towels or rags over the dash cause the sponge will drip a little water etc

Pan, A few years ago I had a bad experience with RainX. I applied the product, no problem. In the rain it performed flawlessly and even reduced wind noise in dry conditions. The problem occurred a few days later. I don't have a garage and live in a forested area. It was spring time and in the morning the windshield would be covered with pollen. Most of the pollen would brush off dry with the wipers or be blown away as I drove however If I activated the windshield-washer fluid the hydrophobic properties of the RainX didn't allow the washer fluid to actually wet the glass. The fluid just beaded up just like rainwater would. The pollen, on the other hand, absorbed the washer fluid and turned into a green paste which smeared back and forth across the windshield. When back home a full hand cleaning was needed. Since then I don't use RainX or waxes with hydrophobic properties on my windshield. Your thoughts?

the best method to avoid streaks on windows and mirrors i heard about from my mother and have been using myself is MORNING FRESH dishwashing liquid along with a kitchen sponge. THAT'S IT! just make sure the sponge is soapy and not dry, it will leave soap streaks which will disappear on its own within a minute or two without leaving oil streaks of any kind requiring further tools like microfibre towels etc. a great product designed predominantly for washing dishes leaving them squeaky clean can be upscaled and applied to windows and mirrors all around the home. it will have the same effect on your vehicle as well. works great on my tinted windows too since there arent any harsh chemicals present in morning fresh. greetings from Australia Melbourne!

Nice! Thanks Pan. Before I picked up our new car, I ordered some clay. When I picked up the car, they told me it has a ceramic coating, so I was bummed that I purchased the clay. It's nice to hear that clay is still useful for windows. 🙂
@PanTheOrganizer Жыл бұрын
Hmmm. It's weird that they told you the car has a ceramic coating... If you didn't pay an extra for a coating service, they would never do that to a brand new car. First, coating services are very expensive. Second, never pay for the dealership to do that, as they always apply garbage products to maximize profits. If you don't want to coat your vehicle yourself, bring it to a real certified detailer. No car comes ceramic coated from the factory. And at the dealership, they only time they will apply anything is if you pay for it. So either they lied to you, or they charged you for a service you should have refused. A new car is never new until it's properly detailed. - at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example. - vehicles are then transported by truck, train and boat so they are exposed to the elements, industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, etc - vehicles are often left at boat docks (when transported by boat) or in exterior parking lots for weeks or months, again being exposed to the elements - at the dealership, the vehicles are almost always poorly prepped using the same dirty water that was used for all the cars on a given day, and poor washing and drying methods leading to swirls and scratches - at the dealership, a layer of cheap wax or paint sealant is usually applied to attempt to make the paint glossy prior to delivery. It's crucial to remove any previous protection before you apply a ceramic coating, as coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat. If you only plan on applying a regular carnauba wax or paint sealant though, you could decide to skip machine polishing, as those protectants can be applied over existing protection and it's not as crucial to prep the paint as well. I explain all of this in this popular video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5jSqqV5Ypp2g8U So you can better visualize the new car prep process, here are the steps I perform on a brand new car for my customers: Aston Martin Vantage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXzKkmavj7uHp9E Volvo XC60: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqenc3Wbo82MfKM Tesla Model Y: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naDLnKZurbVohLs Porsche 911 Carrera: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJTOmpysl6ukqZY Mercedes AMG GT63S matte black: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4abq5pnob2pjrssi=oGxoCp8PWt7gTncV Audi Q7: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmirdHWJi9OcsK8 BMW M6 Gran Coupe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp2maqivgL2mbrM BMW M340i: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6W7mX2Elqtje6c Audi RS3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGWUnnSAm7B3gq8 Golf R: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKOUappqhbx9qc0

@@PanTheOrganizer Thank you for your in-depth reply, it's appreciated. The dealer didn't charge me for a ceramic coating, so I'll have to assume you are 100% correct. It was the finance guy that told me about the ceramic coating, so I take his word with a huge grain of salt. Today I rinsed the Subaru Forester (aka Ruby) with electric pressure washer (60 deg fan), then applied a nice thick W4 Citrus Foam with foam cannon, let it sit a few then rinsed that off. I sprayed some W6 Iron & Fallout on wheels and surrounding areas, scrubbed tires and wheels then rinsed them and wet the car down again. I used the two bucket method using Gwash then rinsed the car down again. I used C2 Ceramic Sealant as a drying agent using a plush microfiber then hand buffed to nice gloss using a large, good quality, drying towel. Tomorrow I'll put some Aero Cosmetics Tire Dressing on the tires and wash all the windows using Invisible Glass and I may then use G6 Perfect Glass after. I use 303 products on the interior. I did get some Gtechniq - Quick Detailer and some DIY Sap Remover to use in between washes. Ruby is looking great, I hope using the C2 Ceramic Sealant wasn't a mistake, I'm mainly just trying to make sap removal easier, we have Fir trees here so pitch is a given. Thanks for all! Dave

I think your method is great, and I'd say removing the old waxy film before applying new wax, is why you get such great results. I'm off to try to find some of that clay.
@PanTheOrganizer2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. The more time you spend prepping a vehicle before you apply any form of protection, the better. The protection will perform better and last longer. Some people just wash the car and apply a wax. That's better than doing nothing, but nowhere near the maximum level of performance and looks. Ideally, you would: 1) wash using a decon or stripping shampoo 2) then use an iron remover to remove brake dust and fallout contamination 3) then do a clay bar stage to remove impurities and other contaminants 4) then machine polish the paintwork to perfection to remove swirls, scratches and oxidation 5) then use an IPA or paint prep spray to remove polishing oils and ensure proper bonding of the protection 6) and then you apply your choice of paint protection: a wax, paint sealant, ceramic coating or graphene coating. See how I fully detail a vehicle in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qputgZaaeLqUgZo

PAN, I’m going to get some of the microfiber you mentioned. I’ve tried the microfiber towels that I have with mediocre results. So far my go to has been Stoner Invisible Glass and old newspaper. There’s a free local paper that comes to our house weekly so I always keep the newsprint sections for glass cleaning, the heavier grocery store add pages don’t work nearly as well… Thanks for the tips, I drive a Jeep Wrangler and the almost completely vertical windshield is a bug killing machine!

Additional tips, towel size 16x16 helps both with surface area, efficiency and giving your hand plenty of real-estate, the gloves are a great idea in general but expecially with widows to if you slip, no oily finger prints, on the inside, just dampen a cloth throughly with water and skip the glass cleaner. On vehicles with vapers it is the quickest way to get that film off....chemicals just spread it around worse. Still have to use 2 towels, 1 wet, 1 dry
@TJsVette2 жыл бұрын
I use invisible glass and that stuff is amazing. When I was in the military we used old newspaper to wipe down the glass after we sprayed the cleaner and believe it or not it leaves a streak free shine, I've used microfiber towels and they don't do as good of a job as the newspaper. Now I've never done the clay bar method so I will give that a try as well.

Many glass cleaners are alcohol based (around10-15%). My go-to glass cleaner is 15% IPA with a dash of Meguiar's D114. This brings up another topic: IMO Pan FAILed on the 1st step in this video: Spraying liberally on the glass results in overspray on the Paint. Most glass cleaners you do NOT want on your paint because they can quickly break down your wax/sealant/ect...

First of all Merry Christmas! A method I have been using now for 10 years is to wipe down the inside of the windshield with a dry lint free microfiber, then using a Mr. Clean sponge and a bowl of warm water wipe the inside of the windshield in a crosshatch pattern being sure to rinse the sponge a couple of times. Then let it dry and use your favorite glass cleaner. The dry rag and Mr. Clean sponge pulls the off Gas film that collects on the windshield.

Easiest way to clean glass I found: using 2 The Rag Company FTW Towels, one dipped in ONR and wrung out, followed by a dry one. I have never gotten as good results before and works every time. It may leave a bit of linting behind, however. If that bothers you, a quick final wipe with The Rag Company's Waffle Weave towel will solve that. That extra final wipe will also help in high humidity and ensures completely smear-free results. As a bonus, no harsh fumes to inhale while working on interior glass!
