Surprise released on March 26th 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, does the remake of the Sega Saturn classic Panzer Dragoon live up to the hype?

Sega announced in December 2018 that Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei are getting high definition remakes. At E3 2019 the publisher, Forever Entertainment S.A. presented the first game trailer on the Nintendo Direct show. The remake of the first Panzer Dragoon game was released on March 26, 2020 as a Nintendo Switch exclusive for a limited time. A version for Stadia is set to be released later in 2020. The remake of the second Panzer Dragoon game has no release date yet.

I was gonna get $60 physical edition, but I've been hearing the same criticisms in every review. And since the original is available on the XboxOne Orta, which I own, I think I'll wait for a steep sale. Good review!

PANZER DRAGOON REMAKE is Master Mind !!! The long-awaited game is great. It was worth waiting. For fans of the old version of the game, this is a return to great times. I recommend, let the dragon kidnap you !!!

Never ever played it back in the day as I had a PS, but the Saturn Game has a hefty price wow. The remake looks great though! Nice short and sweet review!

Saturn game prices are insane! At least its not as bad as Panzer Saga, that ones gotta be going for close to 1k by now.

The controls feel supersloppy. It is hard to evade those fast incoming shots when your dragon is bouncing up and down while he hardly responds to your commands to go up, down, left or right. There is a modern control methode that separates the dragon movement from the aiming but it feels even more awkward since you can only move when the camera is showing towards the front. The controls that just make all those hits feel cheap are my biggest gripe with this. 2nd place goes to the cutscenes who look like something that was made 20 years ago, like early PS2 game render Intros... don't know if this was made on purpose to capture the spirit of the original or because they couldn't do any better.

I forgot to mention that you could only move while facing front, that was a huge issue! Especially with the episode 4 boss. I kinda felt the same way about the graphics too, not sure if it was intentional or not. I felt that they did capture the look of the Saturn version well though.

@@GameRatsBite yeah the 4th Episode is where I am stuck right now. Getting a lot of hits during the level due to the enemys and their shots being so near and it doesn't feel like I really get the chance to react properly... and then comes that guardian boss... Maybe I am playing this wrong but this level feels more like luck than anything else

Considering how intent Nintendo is on making StarFox suck with forced gimmicks (like double motion control through a pad) when they aren't ignoring it altogether, I'd be quite glad of another on-rails shooter filling that niche of the market.

Thanks for this review; it sums up most of my criticisms of the remake while emphasising a fan's love of the franchise, which I share (Saga is one of my favourite video games). As a fan, this was an easy day one purchase, as I want to see the other Panzer Dragoon games remade and released on current gen hardware if at all possible, and I believe the developers behind this share our love of the originals. That said, I'm worried that newcomers will bounce right off it, because although this is a faithful remake it could have benefited from some major changes: most of all, a tutorial. New players have a hell of a difficulty curve to surmount here. While I'm confident that the developer can bring some positive changes to the gameplay (priority 1, IMO, should be the delayed camera rotation), I wouldn't be surprised if younger players are put off by the awkwardness of the camera control, coupled with the total lack of help getting started. Back in the day (over 20 years ago), we all read game manuals. It was the only way to know what we were getting into. Game manuals taught us how to make the most of controls and mechanics, and even helped teach players advanced tactics. These days, this sort of thing is done with a tutorial - or a very easy section punctuated by hint windows - because game manuals are no longer a thing that exists! Also, can we agree that the targeting reticle for the original PD was an eyesore? Team Andromeda clearly thought so with their sequels, as did Smilebit years later when they made Orta. While faithful to the original, an option to simplify the reticle would have been a nice feature.

I feel like there's gonna be a patch for this game that could fix issues later on. A couple days ago they announced there's going to be a remade soundtrack, but that's not in this version apparently. So I guess when the game comes out for everything else that and a patch for the Switch version will come though. I feel like SEGA or Nintendo tried pushing for this timed console exclusive release.

Patches have been confirmed! Remastered soundtrack is already in place and a patch to fix the controls will be coming eventually.

Sega had nothing to do with it but mostly likely Nintendo as they got dibs on the whole “timed exclusivity” nonsense to rush out an incomplete game. Bad idea. See that my problem with a lot of games nowadays. They’re rushed out unfinished/unpolished just to get sales to then be littered by patches to fix or include things that should’ve been there from the beginning.

While the remake was handled by MegaPixel Studio and published by Forever Entertainment, this game has Sega written all over it.

Don't think the game is exclusive,if not mistaken Later will arrive at least to ps4.

It's a timed exclusive for the Switch. As far as I can find, its been confirmed for PC and the Stadia to release at a later date. No mention of PS4 though :(

I think it’s flawed but worth $25.00. The first time I played it the lock on reticule seemed unresponsive and hitting the shoulder buttons to adjust your camera angle seemed somewhat sluggish. I got used to both situations and I’m finding game time be enjoyable.

I don't regret purchasing it for $25, if only just to show that there is still interest in the Panzer series/ Saturn titles. Though I think if someone unfamiliar with Panzer games paid full price, they would probably be disappointed.

I absolutely love the original. I bought this thinking I should support, but now I totally regret it. The graphics are very nice actually, but the lock on mechanic is completely broken and unresponsive as well as the camera turning has input delay. The delay doesn't have anything to do with getting used to it, but rather the fact that it's just plain broken. I'll never buy another game from this developer. How's it that a 20 frame per second Sega Saturn game plays WAY better than this remake? These guys messed up bad.

The art direction is bad and not in line with the panzerverse at all. 1 has always been my least favorite in the series, but i really hope the can get it right for zwei, which is my favorite rail shooter.

There are flaws in this remake, and deep ones, at that. But I do not regret my day-one purchase one bit. Why? Because I want to see the series catapulted into the mainstream the way it should've been back in 1995. I hope they can fix some of the control issues with patches.

It has its flaws, yet I still think it's a great game worth the money. And patches to iron out the flaws are in the works. The devs have already confirmed this. Can't wait for the remastered sound track too. Overall, great game!

The original game was created by years of blood sweat and tears. I don't see how any remake could even compare without the same amount of dedication.

I'll start off by saying I love all the Dragoon titles from the Saturn and up, and then I played this version. The bobbing dragon takes up too much of the view, the controls feel loose and the lock-on was undependable. I know it's locked at 30fps but it just felt janky, stiff movement and overly loose controls resulting in game play that just felt off and not fun. The load times are also bad, and having to quit a game to change the controller settings from the start menu is infuriating to say the least. Had this been a budget title, $9.99, I could have accepted the flaws and waited for the patches. But to release a game in this state for $24.99 is unacceptable, approach with caution. Thankfully I got a refund from the e-shop with little debate, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

The shadows later in the Game look as bad as the shadows in Pokemon Sword/Shield. 30fps... ugly textures Well it runs on weak Switch Hardware. Hope they polish it for xbox

I could be wrong but I don't think it's been confirmed for the Xbox just yet... Only the Stadia of all places.
