The Leopard 2A7 tank is an upgrade package developed by the vehicles original manufacturer, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) for existing Leopard 2 tanks in the German Army. The A7 has since been purchased as an upgrade for other nations Leopard 2 tanks and evolved into the Leopard 2A8. The Leopard 2A7 tank has retained the same engine as other Leopard 2 models, but seen other upgrades in mobility, lethality, protection and networking technology. The Leopard 2PSO is a former tech demonstrator developed by KMW in 2006 to emphasis its latest (at the time) upgrades to optimise the Leopard 2 for fighting in urban and asymmetric areas. Though an order was placed by Germany in 2008, the order was not finalised and didn’t enter service. In 2010, KMW produced the Leopard 2A7+. This was another technology demonstrator and an evolution of the initial PSO model but featured the complete list of available upgrades KMW offered at the time. Just like when the German Army only selected a few of the upgrades of all those available on the KMW Leopard 2 Improved for their A5 upgrade, the army only selected a number of the A7+ upgrades for the A7 model. KMW started upgrading and delivering 20 German Army Leopard 2 tanks in 2014. These 20 vehicles were surplus Dutch Leopard 2A6M that were purchased by Canada to replace the 20 they had leased from Germany for the Afghanistan War and had decided to keep. The Leopard 2A7 primary upgrade is the use of programmable High Explosive Fragmentation DM11 & DM12 rounds, which have required modifications to the breach and Fire Control System. The vehicles Hunter Killer capability has been improved with a new thermal channel for the Commanders Independent Sight, thanks to the installation of the 3rd generation ATTICA-P thermal imager. A new Jenoptik 17 kW Auxiliary Power Unit has been installed and is located on the right, rear side of the hull. This provides power to the electrical systems (FCS, BMS, Comms etc) when the vehicle is in a static position for a period of time, rather than running the main engine to save on fuel and wear-and-tear. The A7 features a new Battlefield Management System called IFIS (Integriertes Führungs- und Informationssystem). The added systems have increased the vehicles weight by 3.4 tonne and has required the frontal torsion bars to be enhanced. A total of 68 Leopard 2A4, 16 A6 and 20 A7 have been upgraded to the A7V model, which is an improved model of the standard Leopard 2A7, but also features improved gunners optics and transmission to help accommodate the additional weight. In 2017 the German Army qualified the new L55/A1 120mm, calibre Length 55 smoothbore main gun for service, which is an improved model of the L55 used on both the A6 and A7. The 68 Leopard 2A4 have had their shorter L44 main guns replaced with the new L55/A1 as part of the upgrade. These 68 vehicles are designated Leopard 2A7V Ausf B, whilst the original A6 and A7 who are using the standard L55 are Leopard 2A7V Ausf A.
