I love how the first appartment could have been completely renovated with just 300-500€ and increase the rent by 50€, but the landlord was probably like "hell no, who cares". It could have looked like the third appartment at least from the design etc.

If even that much. Just tack some shower board panels over the banged up walls. The hardest part would've been reworking the concrete at the entrance because you'd have to actually remove some of the concrete to pour some more in.

@@ShootBigBucks I don't know the law in japan but usually you are allowed to change the appartment to some extend, as long as you can deliver it back in it's original state. I think, if you do it yourself and improve the quality of the appartment, the landlord cannot charge the tenant with increased rent. If he does i can imagine that you can charge him for the work you have done in his appartment, which would yet again lead to him telling the police that he never told you to improve his appartment. Overall, in a realistic scenario, if you better his appartment for free because you want to live there increasing your quality of life, he won't charge you with higher rent maybe even give you a little bonus like lowering it for a few months or even giving you free months for a while as a thank you gift. After you move he will be able to charge more afterall.

Reminds me of NYC where there is a surprising amount of "cheap" places where you get to choose between having a toilet or a shower(sometimes combined with the only sink) in the apartment. One thing I find attractive about Japanese housing is how many options there are for single people who want to live alone. In America it's nearly impossible to find a studio apartment, most apartments are 1, 2 or 3 bedroom. So if you're single you have to rent a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment and share it with 1-2 roommates. I'd much rather just be able to rent a 1-room studio all to myself.

I actually loved the first traditional apartment. I don't know how it works in Japan, but if you're allowed to make improvements I would make it look nice. And be grateful for the opportunity to live in Japan. I've lived without indoor water and with a outhouse in the past and you figure it out and get used to it. Get a gym card or find a onsen. Wood polish, lime, new tatamis, a couple floor chairs and a table, a fresh futon and a couple of wok burners is a fairly easy start. A few house plants.... It's a pretty sweet start. And $200 per month leaves more money to fully explore the rest of Japan.

If you do not go to Tokyo to work every day, but go to Tokyo for pleasure or shopping, I would recommend neighboring prefectures (Kanagawa and Saitama) where you can take a train to Tokyo. Although it will take more time to travel by train, the cost performance of housing will be greatly improved.

honestly, the fact that anything is available is amazing. Maybe I'm too jaded by my attempts at house hunting here in the Uk but for as flawed as these places are they could easily stop someone from being homeless. Sometimes, including here in the UK, working full time doesn't mean you can afford rent and the bills/tax/food costs

@@aaronweiser5421 No. The problem is the government advertising our housing market as an investment opportunity and letting investors buy up all housing and putting them back on the market for exorbitant prices with barely any regulation, together with the government not caring about a housing shortage that has been going on for years and years and not solving anything, and actually actively undermining the construction of new social housing. That is the problem.

RIGHT! Sure the first place was pretty horrifying and the second sucked a lot, but if I imagine myself moving to Japan and trying to find a job, I would consider the second apartment and for sure go for the third one. In my city the average salary is like half of the average salary in Tokyo and the apartments would still be considered extremely cheap.

Because NTT put it in. They were probably running fiber in that area and just "asked permission" to real quickly run fiber into that building's units. That would have preempted a competitor like JCom putting their wire in.
