We tried that years ago and it only killed about half the fleas. The best, 100% guaranteed way to get rid of ALL your fleas is to sprinkle table salt on your carpet and place bowls of water in each room, the salt dehydrates the fleas, they jump into the water a end up drowning. The salt breaks down into a fine powder without ruining your carpet and all you have to do is vacuum it up when you’re done. We had an infestation that was so bad the exterminator wanted thousands to to take care of and we did it for less then $10.

You don't need Dawn, any dish soap/detergent will work. The detergent works in 2 ways. The first way is it breaks down the surface tension on the water. Fleas can be light enough to float on top of water, but the detergent makes the water wetter in essence and thus the fleas fall right into the water rather than being able to float and be dry. Now they can't breathe. The second thing the detergent does is break down the waxy coating fleas (and other arthropods) have on their bodies. Insects and arachnids don't breathe through their face like most animals do. They have tiny holes in their abdomens called Spiracles. Their abdomens move in and out to exchange air much like our lungs expend and contact to do the same thing. With arthropods the waxy coating is supposed to protect the body from too much water absorbing through their exoskeleton and spiracles. The detergent breaks down that wax letting water seep into their body and spiracles so they drown. I suggest you get some diatomaceous earth and finely sprinkle that stuff all over your floors, esp the carpeted ones. Diatomaceous earth is a fine gray/tan colored powder that is naturally mined from the earth. It is comprised of fossilized diatoms which were single celled creatures that lived in the oceans and still do. When fossilized their bodies are sharp, like broken glass though harmless to us. However, this dust is harmful to arthropods (insects, arachnids). When arthropods walk through the diatomaceous earth it sticks to them. As it coats their bodies it literally cuts through their exoskeletons letting air getting in where it's not supposed to and dries them out. It does the same thing to the eggs of the offending creatures. Sprinkle this earth all over the floor using a fine sieve and close off that room for about 3 days. Keep pets out of rooms with the earth on the floor. Even though it's non toxic and natural, you don't want it in the eyes of your animals because their heads are much closer to the floors than ours are. After 3-4 days, vacuum the heck out of that room. If you can seal the doors with tape, the fleas can't get out of that room. Try to do as many rooms as you can at once to kill as many fleas as you can at once. I kind of miss having pets, but I do not miss flea infestations, or ticks.

If you can't find diatomaceous earth, you can use plain old Borax. Definitely keep pets away from Borax even though it is also a product of the earth, you don't want your pets rolling in it and licking it off of their fur or getting in their eyes. Use it the same, sprinkle it all over the floors. What it does is it acts like salt and pulls moisture out of the bodies of the fleas and dries them up, same with their eggs. You may have to do cycles of this as the fleas lay eggs, hatch, grow and do their life cycle again. It will take time to wipe them all out, so you have to be diligent! Bedding must be washed in really hot water and dried the same. The hardest thing to free of fleas is soft furniture like couches with fabric coverings. If you have vinyl or leather upholstery, it's easier to wipe out the fleas. Wash the animal's bedding in really hot water too. You have to wage an all out assault/war on them! If you slack in your attacks, they'll be back.

I put about an inch of water mixed with some dish soap, and a candle in the middle. Set it in the middle of the room at night. The candle attracts the fleas, they jump at the candle, land in he water and sink. Works 100%.

I would just be real careful of the candle, if it was to fall over, it could burn your house down, and I would hate for that to happen. I'm sure you've taken precautions, but with an open flame there isn't enough precautions. Take it from an ex firefighter

Maui Randall 10 inch candle in center of 18 inch diameter pan and the flame could hit the carpet. Candles are just flat dangerous. Cat could run by and knock it over and it doesnt fall like a tree but is projected. Flames get away from many people who lost loved ones saying “it was just a candle”.

I have done this, but a bit differently. Instead of using a plate, I used a large bowl. And instead of using a lamp to make heat, I just used hot water. I used any kind of dish soap. I had great results. I trapped even more fleas than in this video, and in a shorter amount of time. I change out the water three times a day. It works very well.

Hi Joe! I just wanted to thank you SO MUCH for putting this video together for us! I have a pretty big house, and a 20 year old niece with a huge soft spot for homeless and unwanted cats. We currently have 9 (anyone want one?) and for the first time in 20 years, a HUGE flea problem. We started herb boxes at every window and door. After hours of research I found your video!! In two days our bowls have more fleas than water. We can't thank you enough!!! Love from Florida - Michelle and family

Hey Michelle, I’m in Florida too, Orlando area. Sorry to hear about your flea problem, but glad to hear it’s working... we tried everything, and to be fair, everything did help. But when we started doing the traps it really started knocking them out. We kept the traps going day & night until they were gone. Another thing that seemed to help was to sprinkle baking soda on the carpets, then use s broom to sweep it in. Then repeat after every time you vacuum. The baking soda acts as a “desiccant” which dries out the eggs and fleas.

It's important to use a white plate for more reflection. Mix the Dawn in a cup before pouring, it's a bit easier. You can just add a little water when it evaporates. You will have to move the plate from room to room or use more than one plate and repeat the process in two weeks as that is the cycle of reproduction. We have 7 indoor cats and it works, believe me! Be careful not to have the lamp too close to the plate, if the water gets too hot it will discourage the fleas, about 12 to 18 inches with a 40 or 60 max. watt bulb. Don't worry the cats won't touch it, they will stay clear! Good post, thanks!

Fwiw- l started treating our yard along with the dogs 15yrs ago and could count on one hand the low amount of fleas our dogs had since. Remarkable how much treating dogs & the yard both made, seven in the slow release form was a blessing. Amazing video, weird how Dawn kills them so fast because I worked in a grooming parlor (bather) and it took awhile for any flea dip to kill them. Easier on skin than Dawn I guess? Great vid! Update: Like to add you should always avoid eyes and ears when bathing animals. Start at the neck, then quickly do their hind end and work your way to their mid section and let it soak several minutes before rinsing. Fleas will run inside every orifice as soon as water hits them so you have to be fast here. Just remember: 1) "Never soak their head" to avoid water in ears. Water causes ear infections! 2) "Never" start washing one end and go to the opposite end". Never do that, as this chases fleas inside them that come back out later, nasty sorry but its true! Rinse very well, dry soap makes them itch as bad as fleas did.

Denise Wright I have to agree, in fact I spent $170 to get 3 months worth of topical frontline at petsmart for my dog & cat a few years ago & it didn't begin to get rid of the issue in theend I went to the vet & spent about $400 to have each of them treated they had to use a chewable tab that was even more expensive than the usual topical stuff I got at the vet because I'd already put frontline on them & that was one of the ingredients in the topical they normally gave me. I also sprayed the entire backyard & every baseboard doorway window in the house as well as putting off flea bombs in every room of the entire home. The vet said the fleas are mutating every year they are coming out with a new med to kill them it's insane & especially awful & expensive. It's definitely better to justthrow down at the end of summer & get the strongest chewable or topical the vet has to keep it fromever happening again, living in the city was the worst half the people don't ever give there animals the proper care they need & are just running around with animals covered in fleas & filled with worms it's extremely disheartening.

This does work really well, any dish soap works and you don’t need as much as he uses either. All the soap does is brake the surface tension of the water so the fleas sink to the bottom

I literally just set up 3 bowls in my van which seems like overnight became infested. They are literally all over the bottom of these bowls. I’m mortified as to how this happened but I’ll continue to use this 100% full proof, and safe method, thanks to this post. Thanks again…from the bottom of my bowls.

My cats will not allow baths but here is how we do it. A few drops of dishwashing liquid in a dish of water NEARBY because when fleas are stuck in the comb (like it's supposed to work) just immerse the comb FAST and then pull them off underwater. This works as the fleas drown within a minute. Also I sure will try your fleatrap method. Thanks! 😊

This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing this. We struggle with fleas frequently, our area has just been really bad the last few years. What’s worse is the fleas go after me too!! I’ll have to try this next time. Thanks again!

I had a flea infestation when I lived in California and I got rid of them by sprinkling salt on my carpet and left it for a week and the fleas ate the salt and dehydrated. I vacuumed up the salt and examined the bag and there were a million fleas of all different sizes.

Patti Hayden thanks for the comment! I’ve heard about the salt thing but haven’t tried it. Happy to say we are finally flea free, but if they come back I’ll definitely try it. ✊🏻

My daughter brought fleas home not knowing her clients dog had them. Well her 7 cats and one dog got them so bad and she couldn't afford to keep treating them with expensive flea medication. She found this and tried it, couldn't believe how fast it was killing the fleas. She has lamps, and bowls of Dawn setting everywhere and now the flea issue is almost null and void. Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone. :)

Just want to thank you!!! I had been out of town a few months, came home , had raccoons in my chimney. Used a gaser to get them out. Think one died and fleas started appearing just in that area. Used your trick , modified it a bit added acv and surrounded the bowl with glue traps. Amazing results literally killed them all, took a few weeks ,scary to see how many it killed..Flea Free Thank U!!! :)

Thank you for sharing this awesome video of how to kill fleas. I put some hot water in a bowl, a little dawn soap, stir it and I let it sit on my son's carpet and oh wow 5 mins later a big one jumped into the water and drowned. My ankles are itching non stop cuz of fleas. This is gonna to be my go to from now on. I'm also treating my cat with a fleas shampoo and seems to help eliminate fleas. Thank you for sharing! Jesus bless you!

WOWEE! Of ALL the numerous videos I have watched (and many were good) THIS one seems the best because of providing the simplest and environmentally friendliest method. I recently used R.I.P. Fleas Extra carpet spray but messed up thinking it only needed an hour on the carpet instead of 24 hours because I misread that single hour was only for ventilation. Will do it properly tomorrow but afterwards will use your method also. Thank you VERY much mate from the UK!

You bet, just be sure not to use an LED bulb because they don’t put out any heat… fleas are like heat seeking missiles. We used the curly CFL bulbs, and they worked great.
