Honestly, if you abu5e your kids because you were hurt as a child, that honestly makes it worse in my opinion because you knew first hand how awful that is and actively chose to perpetuate the cycle of suffering.

It's so warped because there's a version of "we should appreciate our privilege, that we have food and shelter while many people do not" that is a great thing to teach your kids. But it only superficially resembles "me, your parent, choosing to give you food is a privilege"

@@x-xPhobia exactly.... My wife's family tries to make me feel like I'm "a part of the family" but then they clearly treat me so completely differently I just gave up and tend to just stay home on holidays and get togethers so I can spare myself the reminder of the pain of a fucked up upbringing and the neglect from the very people who were supposed to give a fuck about me. They're all just fake, narcissistic and manipulative p's.o.s. I honestly have met random people on the internet that have treated me with more love and kindness than my own mother. Have you ever read the book, "a child called it?" That's basically how I was raised. If my siblings didn't join in on my abuse they my risk being abused themselves so they all just joined in on abusing me both mentally and physically. My older sister tried to poison me twice because she knows I'm deathly allergic to Tylenol. Man I could go on for hours about the fucked up shit I've endured. I've been diagnosed with PTSD so many different times from starting just different stories and after I start just one of the many many different stories the psychiatrist/psychologist is always like "Wow.... You definitely have PTSD!" And I'm like "You didn't even let me finish! There's five more minutes to this story and it just gets worse and worse" My last psychiatrist said "I'm surprised you didn't turn out to be a serial killer" I was like "Wow that's definitely a new one......Thaaaaank Yoou?"

the midwest seems really ripe for this sort of shit as sad as it is, and worse it's people with some sort of power. there's this case, but also the multiple ones against Dr. Phil due to him recommending places like Turnabout Ranch and many of his younger guests being sent there. it's essentially the summer camp equivalent of this. one of the kids snapped and attacked one of the counselors which resulted in the counselor's death, even worse is he was considered one of the "good" ones. meanwhile Dr. Phil waves it away with the "we're not responsible for what happens to guests after the show" despite directly partnering with, encouraging and recommending this shit.

I've seen documentaries about mormom compounds where they abandon their preteen & teen boys bc there are "too many" boys--and they cant be sold off like livestock into marriage like the girls--so a bunch of young boys live together in near homelessness at the edges of the (cult) compound sharing small trailers. This was like a decade ago, not some time in the faroff past. Religious fanatics have far too much power to abuse children & escape laws, regulations & taxes in this country.

Bro the car accident bit was horrific. I’ve only ever been in one car accident, and no one was injured. There was a lane closure and people were getting off the highway, and my (now ex) boyfriend didn’t let a lady hauling a horse trailer merge. It wasn’t entirely his fault, but he wasn’t vigilant enough and bull-headed, and the whole drivers side of the car was just destroyed. The sound and vibrations gave me nightmares. BTW the boy that escaped was in such a horrible condition that the neighbor was crying on the 911 call. He was so malnourished, that it brought the neighbor to tears. A neighbour of mine works as a temporary foster parent for kids coming out of difficult family situations. One kid in particular used to have extreme eating behaviour at dinner, scoffing it down as fast as he could, because he would often go without food as a punishment. Doing this made him constantly throw up, and made him paranoid over it being taken away. It's the kinda shit kids develop from being treated like this. Foul stuff.

(They were really nice people, I thought they were my actual grandparents for many years) I'm not keen on the whole foster care system though. Since they tend to ruin lives and families more than help them, and as someone who was adopted at birth, with an open adoption until, my birth mom died when I was seven, I have a lot of issues with adoption as well... That said I know there are decent, kind, loving foster parents and adoptive parents out there and I know that there is a need for both.

I was raised in a house like this. I got out when i was 16 by fighting back for the first time. I'm 26 now and have been diagnosed with CPTSD and severe depression. I would lose "privileges" like eating or bathroom breaks or sleep depending on how my stepmother felt that day. I was tortured in many ways. The worst of which I'd have to say was the sleep deprivation. 5 days and nights without sleep, then I was allowed to sleep for 6 hours, and the cycle repeats. I was pulled out of school so that people didn't see the bruises, burns, lacerations, etc. CPS got involved I think 6 times but would never help me. They're a joke. My father only ever stepped in once to stop my stepmother from hurting me. It was when she was pulling my hair out in order to make me bald. Other than that, my father usually ignored what happened to me. Sometimes he would sit me down and ask me to comply with my stepmother's impossible demands so that he didn't have to watch me get hurt. Other times he would beat me because he was mad that I wasn't able to do that. I won't go over everything that happened to me because that would be an actual novel and thinking about this stuff is bad for my psyche. I just hope that these children don't come out as messed up as I did. Children don't deserve this type of treatment.

CPS works by ‘building a case’ so even severe situations aren’t addressed for years. I think if you ever encounter these situations in your personal life, bug the police about it instead of going straight to CPS. If you tell the cops enough times, they can pop in for surprise welfare checks, whereas CPS often tells them when they’re coming so parents have plenty of time to cover for themselves

I actually have trauma from seeing car crashes as a kid and adult. My mom never even pulled over, she made it better and I remember seeing a car get slammed at like 40 miles an hour. I watched the whole thing, my mom bought me McDonald’s after and that kinda took me out of it. It is like final destination witnessing a car wreck, I’ve never stuck around to see the aftermath, but in therapy I realized seeing bad wrecks affected me. I remember one time I was cutting up in traffic and zooming between cars. I saw an old pickup truck trying to keep up and thought nothing of it. I see a redlight coming up so I come to a stop, about 5 seconds later that truck slammed into a row of parked cars doing what felt like 40-50mph. I mean I saw it in slow motion and it happened like 5 feet away from me. It was spring break too so traffic was bad and I just remember him slamming this row of cars top speed. Imagining my mom pulling over and telling me as a kid that could have been us would have stuck with me for life, just witnessing a bad wreck is trauma enough. Ive seen 3 wrecks where someone slammed into a row of stopped cars just like this and one of them I was hit too. Accidents are so unpredictable, I got rear ended once because the car in front of me broke down at the redlight and when it turned green the guy behind me wasn’t paying attention and hit me.

The entire CPS is a joke. Me and my siblings fully admitted to abuse from a stepfather to them and they did nothing. Even the Police told a 13 year old me they will not answer calls from our house anymore, because they were called out so many times to break up nasty physical altercations, but refused to prosecute the offender. Child abuse is pitifully ignored by the systems created for it, and is most often perpetuated by those who virtue signal about "Caring about the children"
@gilla2092

I read this while I took child psychology in high-school. Low and behold it was my first and only year of high-school, I ended up enduring absolute hell to which I think I only escaped with the way I did (minus the PTSD/DID/GED diagnostics from it) was from my little siblings. I am the eldest of seven, and always kind of a third parent, but I was made to raise my little brothers the moment they came in the door. I endured everything from severe isolation, starvation (weighed 80lb at 5'10), medical neglect (I had ulcers in my colon, they told me I was making it up). I endured so much. I come back to that book again and again. I read it before it all happened and it was something I kept going back to in my mind as I was kept in a basement surrounded in filth. I wholly believe this book belongs in school, I do not care where. Mandatory. If we have the ability to make so many accessories for children we need to double down on the nasty reality of what people are capable of. Raise awareness. So many more jobs should apply to a "mandated reporter" status. Even now I have to fight to keep what happened to me from happening to my siblings, CPS in pennsylvania are chicken shit among shits. This book is without a doubt a heart wrenching example of both the cruelty of human nature, and the unbreakable human spirit in action.

@@guitubagrips9719I hope you heal and learn that that guy was a loser bullying kids and a single mom I’ve been in the same boat and realized those were little kids disguised as grown men

6:00 I could never talk to my mom like that, and she was a motorcycle riding, barge working , oil field woman in the days where people questioned that. She was a saint. God Bless my mother.

I grew up in a similarly abusive home, only the abuser was my father. He was extremely charismatic, looked great on paper, we were a perfect looking family, so no one ever thought to check on us when I lost weight, when I missed tons of school, when I was consistently bruised. You wanna know how Kevin sleeps at night knowing his spouse is abusing his children? He doesn't. He's going to carry the guilt for the rest of his life. My mother had to leave with my older brother in the middle of the night because my father was going to kill him. Like legitimately end his life. For almost a year, my younger brother and I lived alone with my father and my mother still beats herself up about it 15 years later. Seeing videos of Ruby talking to the whole family, including Kevin, he is just as much a victim as the kids. The kids will either be much closer with their dad after this or never speak to him again (and rightfully so). I empathize with Kevin, but he should definitely still face legal consequences
