With so many students who suffer with other teachers who dont explain this theme this well, I have to say you have to be underpaid. No way those other teachers should be near your salary. This video got 234 thousand views. That's 234 thousand people walking away with clarity. That's got to be worth alot!

BRAVO Mr. P!! His simple explanation of drawing the red square around the nonmetal atom finally made me understand this business of lone pairs! It has been many years since I learned this incorrectly back in college. Now, as an old duffer, I FINALLY GET IT!! Mr. P can teach an old dog new tricks.

So, I'm a junior in high school and chemistry is definitely not my subject. I have a semester exam tomorrow based on everything we've learned in the past eighteen weeks. I literally have only understood around 20% of everything we've learned. My teacher is a great guy, just not the best teacher (in my opinion). But I checked out your channel tonight and I believe you are the reason I'll be passing this exam tomorrow and this semester. You're awesome, can't thank you enough!

Dear Mr P., I have stressed over Chemistry for two terms. Firstly, I found it extremely difficult and painful to understand all these numbers and words etc. and personally I felt that this wasn't the subject I should be taking for my Final Examinations. However, ever since I started watching your videos, I have experienced a completely different attitude towards Chemistry. I have understood what you have taught me in one go. Previously I had to get taught millions of times to understand. Thanks

@altrock17 They do repel, however atoms have open orbitals to allow electrons to vacate them when they bond, so these shared electrons are not really side by side. Look up the quantum model of the atom to understand what these orbitals look like.

I have a question teacher. How would you approach more complex compounds that have atoms like something with sulfur or other exceptions to the octet rule? I know you can check by finding the formal charges but is there a good method to go about it, or do you just guess and check? Also, when do we use double/triple bonds over single?

The valency is the number of electrons needed to obtain a stable (full) outer shell of electrons. Oxygen needs 2 electrons to do that, hence why it would say it has a valency of 2, however, Oxygen has 6 valence electrons. Hope that helps you. Good luck with your studies. Mr.P

You use the valence electrons. Mr.P
@zenfoodist
@zenfoodist 13 жыл бұрын
@psalmistnpraze you don't look at the atomic number, you look for the number of valence electrons. The electron configuration for O is 1s2 2s2 2p4, so in the 2 suborbital- the outermost shell, you have a total of 6 electrons. These are your valence electrons- the ones that will react with other elements.
@Papapodcasts
@Papapodcasts 14 жыл бұрын
@ayala314 Yes you are right about that. That number represents how many electrons will be around P. However we won't show the bond between P and the 3 H's as dots. Some books do. I like to use lines. Hope that helped you. Good luck on your test. Mr.P
