Know what I miss? The seasons from gen 5. It was always found it kind of fun that depending on which month you were playing, the aesthetics of the world were different, and even locations/rarities of different species were different. Really encouraged you to come back to the game after some time to access areas you couldn't before, find different pokemon, etc. I always kind of hoped that would've stuck, like the day/night cycle more or less has.

GameFreak are absolute masters at removing beloved features for no good reason at all. I get that you can't keep every single new feature throughout the generations and that new games need to innovate in some form, but I remember being really upset that B/W lacked several features that I *loved* about their predecessors (think V.S. Seeker, Secret Bases, Poké Radar, Underground, ...). Great video.

What I really liked about Ultra Sun and Moon was that those games were the ones that had the most additional Pokémon features and it was so over the top it really made you feel like you were the most powerful trainer. Like you could have a team with a Pokémon with mega evo, then switch to a Pokémon with a Z-Move, then switch to a Pokémon with primal reversion(which wasn't mentioned on the video) and we also had ultra beasts. Also the introduction of ultra beasts kinda explains why we have some of these features in only some games, apparently some of the games and remakes happen on different dimensions?

Primal Reversion wasn't mentioned because it was just mega evolution with a different name for 2 specific pokemon.

I really miss the small housekeeping-ish things. Stuff like checking my Poke Pelago islands for pokemon or items, collecting berries from the various berry plants, or checking all my honey trees. Small stuff like that were what kept me playing pokemon games even after I 100% them, cause frankly, pokemon games, especially new ones, run out of content fast. Stuff like that doesn't appear in new games anymore, unless you count checking raid dens in gens 8-9, but I didn't really like those. I also miss post game story's. Like housekeeping chores. those let me play pokemon games long then usual, but with gen 9 those seem to have disappeared, (The Way Home I feel is too connected to the rest of the game to be post game in my eyes, I always thought the post game started after you beat that story). Or just Post game areas like a Battle frontier or the Sevi islands or something!

I think the only reason people actively disliked Pokestar Studios is because you were forced to participate at least once and it really made no sense in the story. If not for that, I think people would probably remember it more fondly, cause it was far from a bad minigame. I liked it.

I noticed a long while ago that there tends to be one BIG gimmick that might stay around for a generation or two, and between 2 and 5 smaller gimmicks that may get moved forward or completely dropped. And even the stuff that gets moved forward tends to get changed or rolled into a different gimmick. Main example is gen 6's Pokemon Amie, which became that washing mechanic in 7, to playing with your pokemon in 8 when you camp, and now it's back to also washing them in Scarlet and Violet.

The Game Corner was also cut from the Korean Versions of the game, as gambling is actually prohibited in South Korea (despite GSC and DP seemingly having them in Korea). I'm so glad you mentioned the Pokemon Contests! It was my favorite thing to do in my first pokemon game, which was Pokemon Ruby. I suppose they were technically super easy for most, but I had the added challenge of contending with the unexpected feature of Gen 3, which was cartridge clock battery death~ So I was limited to a finite number of berries, and therefore a finite number of pokeblocks to work with. It certainly added an extra difficulty level as I deliberated between training a pokemon on a specific move to increase its stats, or use one of the only few pokeblocks I have to help boost its stats artificially.

I missed the Pokestar Studios because they have some INSANE stories the vast majority of people never saw, if gen 5 remakes ever include bw2, I hope they slightly re-do them to be easier, or make its forced tutorial more straight-forward an explanation. Double battles in general is another, it's kind of insane to me the standard battle format is Doubles, but there's no option to even play with them for every game but Colosseum/XD. It really doesn't help the insane gap between beginner playsrs and anyone wanting to try online when they find this bad fact out! In addition to that is Inversion battles, which I think was a cool idea to play around with, even if it technically would break a lot of types (Electric for example)

Gen VI’s inverse battles, which reversed type match-ups. In XY it was in a house on a late game route against one NCP, and only once a day, which was very frustrating because of the potential in the premise. This could have been the USP of a gym, a tournament area (or even a Battle Frontier type facility) or a rematch of the Elite Four, or a condition the player could invoke, making battles a bit harder by challenging muscle memory in regards to type matches. You’re facing a water type, instinct is to use a grass or electric type but if under Inverse conditions, you’d be better off with a fire, rock or ground type because the tables have turned. It’s even simple to carry forward because it hasn’t got an item attached or region specific mechanic behind it, and doesn’t require extra resources like triple or rotation battles do. It could even be a move effect or special ability, there are moves and abilities that swap stats and reverse how stats inform priority of moves such as Trick Room giving advantage to slower Pokemon. The terrain and weather moves strengthen attacks of a specific type, something that’s gone back to Gen 2 for the weather moves and a Pokemon that flips the type chart around is a far better gimmick than over half a dozen visual variations.

Mega evolution is theoretically the best feature to be added (and then removed) to the game, but the implementation was so bad. Too many pokemon that should have never gotten a mega (pseudo legendary and legendary pokemon), and a lot of pokemon that needed them to be viable didn't get any (fan favorites here are Flygon and Luxray). I wish it would come back, but remove the mega's from pokemon that didn't need the stat increase, and give them to pokemon that do need the stats instead. That way you might actually have a system in place that can be expanded upon. Edit: If there is anything I want back, it's Secret Bases though.

About the slot machines being removed starting in HGSS, well in France (and in Europe in general) it was also removed in Platinum and so the last games you could play the slot machines were the og Diamond and Pearl.

My personal favorite feature that was never made again after Gen 5, specifically Black2/White2, is the Join Avenue & the Medal System. The JA was awesome because you were basically building your own mall with the things you can buy from specific vendors like evolution items, EVs and friendship for cheap. The Medal system finally gave pokemon something close to a "trophy system," like in playstation and xbox and gave me, a completionist, something to work for. It made me play for over 500 hrs just trying to complete it and now its just sad that nothing like that has come back since then.

Contests were my favorite bonus activity and seeing them ruined in BDSP made me upset

BDSP has secret bases and the underground. It's a remake, so.. duh. But weirdly it wasn't mentioned, unlike the other returning features in those games.

2:06 excuse you i LOVED the pokestar studios so much, as a kid i used to say 'take me home buddy' to my flying type whenever it brought me back there i loved going through all the different options and making a bunch of money i never got to see and getting more items than i could hold from fans i spent over a thousand hours in my white 2 and a considerable chunk of that was in the pokestar studios

A lot of people don't think of this, but they're gonna bring back megas for the gen 6 remakes, when those come out in like 8 years

My all time favorite feature was the Mega Evolutions!! I also really loved the Voltorb flip game at the game corner, but not as much as the Megas!!

Battle Frontier and Battle Tower. I spent so much time at the Battle Frontier on Emerald and a little bit on Platinum. I don't believe I ever received a badge from there but it was so much fun exploring there and battling.

As someone who hasn't played some gen 4, I actually learned a lot about weird features in this video. Like, I never really understood what mega evolutions were before this or anything

Most of the things, like beauty contest and hideout's... I don't really miss. Some things I'm happy that they're removed like the gambling machines. And a few, like mega evolution I do miss a lot.
