Ultimate Paper Mache

Күн бұрын

Start sculpting your paper mache animals the easy way by using a custom-made armature pattern. Get life-like results for any animal, bird, lizard or fish you sculpt.
For screen shots and written instructions, go here: www.UltimatePa...
You don't even have to use paper mache, like I usually do. When I make an animal sculpture with clay, I start with a pattern and build the clay sculpture around it. In fact, that's how I made the original models for the animal masks and wall art behind me in the video. To see the patterns, visit this page: www.ultimatepa...
If you're new to sculpting, you might want to check out my new blog post with the 5 basic steps to making a paper mache sculpture. You can see it here: www.ultimatepa...
I wasn't the first person to think of the idea of starting a sculpture with the outline of the silhouette, but for some reason I have only found three other people who have taught the method in books or video. Sadly, these are fairly obscure references, and you probably won't find them mentioned anywhere else.
I found a one-sentence mention of sculpting patterns in an out of print book called "3-D Wizardry: Design in Papier Mache, Plaster and Foam." amzn.to/2GJmXnY
This book teaches beginners to make a recognizable portrait in clay their very first try. It's called "Sculpting Made Easy" by Catherine Barjansky. Also out of print, unfortunately. amzn.to/2X13LrV
And the best DVD about sculpting heads that I've ever seen is called Sculpting the Head and Face by Adam Reeder. I like it because it works. The DVD is almost impossible to find, even by searching on amazon. I don't know why... You can see it here if you're interested: amzn.to/2WYlC2E

Thank you for these straightforward instructions! Fifteen years ago I saw a sculpture of a primitive horse and fell in love with it. I had over a decade of crafting skill throwing and sculpting clay but knew paper mache would be the medium best used for replicating the horse sculpture. This is so exciting!!!!

Thank you, Jonnie (Johnnie?). I've been working/playing with paper since the 1980s (mostly in the genre of the Mexican folk art of Alebrijes -- ie. my Avatar) but I still picked up some tips from you. :^) Mostly, you've validated some techniques that I've been using for years. One thing I have found invaluable has been an LED light-board. My one -- self imposed -- limitation is that I remove all armatures from the final piece unless they're made totally of paper. That is, I use strictly paper, glue, paint, and shellac. No sticks, wires, foil, balloons...etc. It adds another level of complexity that I enjoy from an engineering perspective. I kinda pride myself on how light-weight my works are. BTW, thanks for the video. I just subscribed and will be checking back. Just sane... :^) Saint

@@UltimatePaperMache Cool. I'll see if I can rustle up some pictures to post. Mostly, I've given them all away to friends and family -- I'm sure you know how that goes. :^) BTW, I highly recommend a light-board that runs on a USB cable. I can sit in my van and work. I also have a little Jackery battery so I can work just about anywhere -- like at the beach. Just sane... :^) Saint

Great video and awesome artwork ! I used to use the square scaling method when computers weren't around and it still works great. But for lazy people like me, most of today's printers can print larger than their standard paper's dimensions by using a layout option called "mosaic" or "poster" (at least that's what they are called in french). You can print on 2x2 separate sheets, or 3x3, 4x4 etc. Then you just have to align and tape the sheets together, cut the shapes out, trace them on cardboard and voilà ! Hope that helps.
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 3 жыл бұрын
Great idea, Erick. I think my printer can do that, too, but I haven't tried it. It would be a lot faster, though. 😀

Jonni, thanks for the update on your process. To save money on foil, visit a restaurant supply shop or some place like COSTCO, and purchase their large rolls. The ones I buy are 12" X 1000' and cost about $18 back then The last one I purchased was in 2010 but I've only used it for food storage, etc. I prefer buying my foil (and plastic wrap) this way as it cuts down on how much I have to tote to the recycling center plus saving me money in the long run.
@UltimatePaperMache

Great idea. I buy the largest and cheapest roll at Walmart. The cheaper foil is actually easier to use for sculpting, and that's a nice plus. We don't have a Costco nearby, unfortunately. I wish we did.

Your stuff is beautiful, HOWEVER..... I honestly don't understand why people have to make paper mache SO difficult now days. When my cousins, my siblings and I were little, our Aunt and our Gramma used to do paper mache with us ALL the time. We would make hot air balloons, animals, birds, crosses, and all sorts of stuff with just wire hangers, balloons and news paper with white school glue OR watered down flour! And they looked just as good as yours does...And we never Drew anything down on paper. What we wanted, our Gramma or our Aunt helped us shape the wire. No drawing, no printing, no nothing but our imaginations. Now days, EVERYTHING has to be done with computers and other stuff. Let's just get back to the basics shall we?!

I computer enlarge photos or drawings (in my case, in photoshop) by going to the bar at the top of your screen, to image to image size. You should then see the image size menu. Set the measurement units to inches and type in the vertical or horizontal size you want (say 24 inches). The the related horizontal or vertical scale will adjust automatically. I then select a rectangle approximately 8x10" to fit onto a normal printer paper.I then(under the edit menu, top bar) hit fill, and that brings up a menu in which you set the percentage color to say 10% and fill . So you have slightly greyed the part of the image you are printing. This is handy because you will be able to tell exactly what area to cut out of your printed page, and what area in your computer image you have already done., I copy and paste this to a new file and print this image. Go back, Move the selection and repeat until you have printed out the entire enlargement. Cut and scotch tape it together. Ann Preston

You are SUCH a pleasure to watch! Your methods here resemble techniques I have utilized throughout the years for various projects that I understand your directions completely. My question is can I use this armature technique with polymer clay? I have had such a fit with getting my proportions just right. What might be different? I just started with clay but watching you makes me want to try paper mache!
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 4 ай бұрын
I'm sorry I'm replying so late. I don't work with polymer clay. Is it possible to use a foil armature under the clay, or will the clay shrink and crack as it bakes? It would be worth experimenting with it, for sure. The patterns make sculpting animals so much easier, and the proportions always come out right. If you try it, please let us know if it works. 😊

I probably won't have time, but you can use the instructions in this video to make a pattern for your cheetah. That will get you started.

As I was saying in my last few comments to you, I was in the process of creating a Tasmanian devil, but today I had to scrap it as it was not right. As you say if the armature is wrong, the whole creation will be wrong

I know this is some years old but I didn't see if you left the perlite in, I heard you mention you were looking for vermiculite. But aren't both moisture retention products for gardening? So would they not suck up moisture from the air?

Hi Petrik. Are you talking about my paper mache clay recipe? Or the recipes I shared for making concrete sculptures? I am not using either perlite or vermiculite in anything at the moment, but if I know which recipe you're referring to I could be more helpful.

What would you do if you wanted to use your art in the garden? How would you UV them? How would you waterproof them? Wondering if your plaster cloth idea might work.

I would make my garden art with something other than paper mache. I've tried using various products to keep water from seeping into a paper mache clay sculpture, but none of them worked for me. I made a video about it, with some ideas you can experiment with, but my best suggestion is to spend your creative time building garden sculptures out of materials that are made for outdoor use. Have you seen my two-part series about my garden gnome? It has not paper mache, but it was easy to make and it's survived two Minnesota winters without any problems at all. You can see the first video in the series here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/gnome

If you have a bit of money, you could get a projector connected to your PC or laptop, then project your pattern the size you want on a wall or your cardboard and draw it, then done in a few minutes.

Thank you so much for sharing the information! I have never worked with paper mache and now have a rather ambitious idea, I want to make a big Donald Duck to suprise my father for Christmas (he is a cancer patient at the moment). But I don´t really know how to go about it. Your videos give me some inspiration. I just wonder if I can get the materials over here in Germany. And I really don´t like the use of so much aluminium foil since it is very bad for the environment to produce it, I´d rather work with tightly crumpled paper. I just hope I can really do this!

What an interesting gift idea. Is your father a big Donald Duck fan?

@@UltimatePaperMache Oh, thank you for your reply, that is really nice of you! Well, he used to be a fan when he was a child in the 50s, and he passed it on to me when I was a little girl. He has become grumpier and grumpier over the years and claims to reject all that now, but whenever he comes across a funny Donald Duck picture, he still smiles. And last Christmas I decided to give me and my parents some fun by putting several of the old cartoons on TV (from the 30s and 40s) and it was a huge success with them. And I just know for sure it would make them laugh when they see a big Donald figure in Santa dress next to the Christmas tree. We can all do with a laugh. I was (falsly) diagnosed with lymphoma in early summer, just at the same time as my father with canacer of the bladder, we even had our surgery at the same time at the same hospital. My tumour turned out to be a harmless schwannoma, but they damaged my sympathetic nerve and now I can´t fully open my right eye anymore for the rest of my life, and my nose is permanently blocked because the nerve is responsible for a free nose as well. There is even more going on in the family (everybody was completely healthy before, I don´t know where all the bad luck comes from, I guess it´s a Donald Duck trait), this is why I want to put a laugh under the tree this year. I just watched your fantastic boobies videos which will help a lot, I just hope that it will look at least a bit like Donald Duck, whatever I will be producing in the end 😄!

I didn't make a part two for the armatures, but I did write a whole book about using the patterns to make animal sculptures. The piggy is one of the projects in the book. You can find it here: amzn.to/1nMUO3a If you prefer videos and you're just getting started, I recommend the blue hippo video series. This is the first one in the series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anLQioZsh76HasU
