0:35 I've been saying this for years. The Milisecond Sticker Star Came out everyone should have ran over to Super Paper Mario yelling, "Please take me back! So what if you're not the paper mario I originally hoped for I NEVER KNEW HOW BAD THINGS COULD GET" Super Paper Mario might not be a traditional JRPG like the first two but it still has the heart and soul of a real paper mario game.

You know what I think is the biggest missed opportunity of this game? It's a game based entirely around paint, on a console with a stylus and touch-sensitive tablet, and there's no painting mechanic. NO, I am not counting the Paint Hammer or painting blank cards as a painting mechanic. Pressing a button to hit white spots so they autofill with the correct color is not painting. It's a fill tool at best, but a fill tool would at least let you select your own colors. How about using Okami-style brush strokes on the gamepad for special moves? Paint a heart to use a healing move, paint a circle with a fuse to use an explosion, or paint a star to rain falling stars down on the enemies. You remember Art Attack from TTYD? Imagine if you could use the stylus to draw a circle around the enemies instead of a control stick. It would feel so much more natural! The Wii U even uses a tablet and stylus for a controller - *like what actual digital artists use* - and at no point are you called upon to use the stylus as a paintbrush. The Wii U is the ONE console that could pull off painting mechanics perfectly, Color Splash is the ONE game that could make the awkwardly huge tablet controller feel fitting, and they just... did nothing with it.

Imagine if the regular attacks were drawn and you have a few basic silhouettes to help you draw but you could speed it up by drawing the attack silhouette of a boot on the always available drawing screen or something.

Max morter The only praise this game receives is excellent dialogue but the constant criticism of the battle and the plot is much more talked about. Even loyal fans were vocal about being dissatisfied. There are however people who like the game because of its dialogue and ignore the rest but you get those people in every fanbase.

Shadow Freddy The reason I ask is because _Mario_ has been sorely lacking in drama. It's... kinda hard to be interested in the universe anymore. I can't believe I suggested it, and I really like Bowser as a character... but I just feel like he's been a villain too often lately. It doesn't help that, no matter what happens, Bowser will never acknowledge the possibility that his _own army_ may be losing hope for the future. There was a moment in Color Splash (of all games!) where a nameless Shy Guy mentions giving up on having dreams because of his king's undying nature. I feel bad! The Koopa Troop will never be free to live their lives they way _they_ want to! It's almost like the Monsters in Undertale. The only difference is, instead of their leader promising freedom, all they can see is an endless war with a plumber who is probably getting just as fed up with it all as they are. :'( But... most of them hide it because they've accepted the futility of questioning it. Man... what a depressing way to live, huh?

I liked that game because blending an action-platformer with RPG mechanics is one of my favourite things, the best of both (until they get coarced into an unhappy marriage with pestering kids and annoying neighbours). I wish Nintendo has the decency to make a proper RPG game about Mario or Paper Mario, even if they shamelessly copy Octopath Traveller.

You know what makes TTYD relevant in this scenario? Whenever you tattle on the punies with Goombella, those things from that big tree, she states that she can't tell them apart multiple times. What i imagine the thought process for Color Splash to be: Executive 1: "Alright everyone, Sticker Star was less then well received and the fans have clearly made it well known that the original Paper Mario and TTYD format are still beloved and desired in the series. How can we make our upcoming Paper Mario title a hit like the good old days? Executive 2 (Chad): "You just answered your own question, we just have to ..." Executive 3 (Bill): "Hey I got's an idea! Players didn't like Sticker Star because it was for a handheld, had virtually no plot, and because the concept was too new! Now that the idea has sunk in we just need to add more story for the nostalgia crowd and overall the combat system (ie: barley changing it at all) and we will be swimming in money!" It's more that the two were developed so close together that by the time they started getting feedback about _Sticker Star_ , they were too deep in to actually do anything about _Colour Splash_ and still make the deadline. All but literally up shit creek without a paddle, so they had to at least make the best of what they had before they reached the "water"fall at the end.

Yeah Super Paper Mario was by far my favourite of the bunch. Maybe that's why I don't utterly despise the last two games in the series, since I'm not a great lover of the original system anyway. People dislike them because it's not what they want, not necessarily because they're bad (though sticker star definitley can be described as such).

honestly, color splash is awesome , and i'm not saying this as a nintendo fanboy, the visuals and music being amazing aside, the writing is hilarious, unlike sticker star which didn't have that much dialogue in the first place, the levels have so much creativity: a forest where everything is gigantic, the most epic rock-paper-scissors fight you'll ever see, helping a toad realise he has superpowers, proving that somebody is cheating in a carnaval game and shy guy which acts like the girl from the ring are just the start, the similar toads are usually just in the overworld or as part of a joke, there definitely is some variety and you do get experience points! yes it's not like the first two paper mario games, it has levels instead of chapters but i like this game more than even TYD, i really do

In addition to that, the boss battles fizzle out if you didn't bring enough cards to defeat them (or if you used your Thing card at the wrong time). So you know you can't beat them, yet you shouldn't run away because of all the cards you wasted in the battle. Best choice is to just lay back, let the boss kill you and get the game over, so you'll be able to start over fresh. And who's idea was it to get rid of the badges??

I read the description of the game. All these people do is compare it to other RPGs like they're afraid it won't stand on its own if they don't. Also the artstyle looks too much like every other indie game out there. It's only furthering my problems with the current indie market: everything is looking the bloody same with very little variety. Well this sounds awful... I mean most games do by Yahtzee's standards lol, but he was right on the money with his reviews of past Paper Mario games so I'll be steering clear of this one! I don't know why Nintendo seems to keep going out of their way to disrupt the gameplay and characters that made the first two games so great. Knock it off already! Thousand Year Door was essentially a masterpiece, and definitely the most original and humorous Mario game I've ever played, but they seem to keep going further and further off course with each release... why!? The kooky combat system is what kept me away from the last couple PM games, and this game seems to have gotten even worse in that regard, AND dropped all sense of personality... really not sure wtf is happening with this series but it bums me out :(

They realized they had two Mario RPG series, and decided to Change genre for one of them. ended up being Paper Mario. If you look at some of the interviews around Color Splash, in one of them, they say that they want Mario and Luigi to be THE Mario RPG franchise, while Paper Mario will be "Action-Adventure." So really they mean a "we'll just throw whatever random ideas we have at it" series. The Paper Mario of old seems to be gone unfortunately. :(

Sadly, the biggest issue with _Paper Mario_ post-Wii was that Miyamoto wouldn't let the devs create new characters, he wouldn't let them write interesting stories, and he wouldn't let them use RPG mechanics, because according to him video games aren't supposed to have plots and nobody likes RPGs, not even the RPG fans that are in all likelihood literally lining the perimeter of their HQ and begging for a new _TTYD_ -like game. This led to _Sticker Star_ , which unfortunately ended up crippling _Colour Splash_ as well because it was already far enough into development (with _SS_ 's engine) by the time they realised that games that actively abhor everything that literally everyone loves about a series are, in fact, a rather poor idea for the next mainstream game. *Hopefully* _Origami King_ will be a return to form, although it's really hard to tell from what we've seen so far, with the battle system not looking too promising(?)... That said, I actually _do_ like how they were exploring the idea of the world itself being made of paper, and the implications thereof. That's pretty much the biggest thing that _SS_ and _Better SS_ (I mean _CS_ ) did right, although it was very clearly just baby steps. Now, if they could keep the "being paper actually means something other than just neat 2D-sprites-in-3D-world graphics", while still retaining the fun stories that weren't afraid to get dark of the first games, and the action-RPG gameplay of the first two (possibly mixed with _Super_ for on-field gameplay), we would have something truly worthy of the _Paper Mario_ name. ...It's kinda telling when _Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam_ is more of a _Paper Mario_ game than the one actually *called* _Paper Mario_ on the same system. xD

My issue here is Paper Mario before was just an artstyle to tell a story that happened to Mario (like his usual adventures) and not a separate world itself. It's a way to tell Mario stories and world that the platformers cannot and without a TV show or movie, is the closest Mario story you could get. Sure now they can make Paper Mario a papercraft world now but that means there has to be a substitute Mario RPG for it with a similar tone. Mario & Luigi is good (and sadly gone), but feels more comedic than fantastic as the original Paper Mario series did.

I see where you're coming from, @@zjzr08, but exploring the world's paper-ness was something the games did almost right from the start. It was subtle in the original (mostly just playing with layering, although I think I remember one or two more complex instances), and only started to actually get acknowledged in _TTYD_ (with the "do paper things" curses) & _Super_ (an interesting logical extension of "2D sprites in a 3D world"), though, so it's honestly really easy to miss. It originally mainly came off as just poking fun at the games' storybook nature, but it's honestly something that could add a lot of depth. Especially in terms of fantasy, where it could be a nifty graphical way of showing magic and other standard elements. Their place in the larger _Mario_ 'verse is a bit weird, though, so I really don't know what to say there. xD The original game came across as a book written about Mario's exploits, likely kids' lit from the Mushroom Kingdom; this was referenced and enforced with _TTYD_ , with Paper Luigi hanging a lampshade on and poking fun at the first two games in general. They kinda lost track of that for a bit, but it honestly got kinda weird with _Paper Jam_ , in a way that's... actually perfectly faithful to the original in the silliest possible way (as in, _Paper Mario_ literally *is* a book in the Mushroom Kingdom). So, in a way, it's always been its own world right from the start, but mainly as a justification for exploring the world & other types of stories as you mentioned. ;P Overall, I don't think these two things conflict, personally. Gameplay-wise, exploring the implications of a paper world open a lot of interesting possibilities, while also making room for a good author to play with and poke fun at the series and its standard tropes; plotwise, it could be used as a metaphor for other storytelling elements, which seems to be the part they tend to struggle with the most. They seem to _want_ to use "the world is paper" for exploring the media's limitations (it's been used to represent magic curses, dimensional anomalies & transit, extraplanar entities/SCPs (Things, since they're _not_ paper), mind control & viruses ( _CS_ ), and now seemingly Borg assimilation ( _OK_ )), and it honestly is pretty interesting what they do with it, but they seem to be afraid to fully commit to it.

Tanabe's partly to blame, yes,@@mikiekelly2113, but he's not the one that instigated the changes; ultimately, it all still goes back to Miyamoto. Miyamoto wanted the dev team to create as few new characters as possible, and only use existing characters; Tanabe ran with this, and only focused on Toads specifically. Miyamoto didn't want the game to have a story, which led to both the lack of personality and characterisation, and to Tanabe focusing on the "paper" aspect to fill in the gap; I don't mind the paper focus, personally, but despise that it came at the extent of the series' typical well-written stories. And most cripplingly, an Iwata Asks interview pointed out that after playing the game, Miyamoto made them change it because it was "just a port of the GC version"; while Tanabe did run with this, and Taro used it to make the useless battle system, remember what the biggest complaint about _Sticker Star_ was: That it's so different from _TTYD_ , in all the wrong ways. Which is explicitly what Miyamoto told them to do, to change it so that it was nothing like _TTYD_ .

@@MrOmegatronic Late reply, but it just feels that the Mario RPGs (including Mario & Luigi) are my "story" Mario games and a refreshing break on the platform Mario games that you won't expect to have them. They felt closest to what a Mario anime/cartoon feels like, making them feel like true characters. These paper worlds feel cutsey to me like a Teen Titans Go version of the games. It could've been an interesting supplement to the Mario RPGs, but they are banking on the Paper Mario brand to make those who see it as "Mario's story with 2D artstyle" to be hooked with it, not knowing they practically made a separate series BASED ON the aesthetics used in the series.

That's not so much an example of good writing as it is of good one-liners. Can the Color Splash localization team get people laughing at their jokes? Absolutely! Does the Color Splash story draw people in and leave them wowed and amazed? Do you feel emotional attachment to the various characters, or are you just laughing at the stuff they say a lot? For examples of "good writing" in the Paper Mario series, I'd point to Vivian or Count Bleck and Tippi from TTYD and SPM respectively. The reason people don't seem to like the humor in Color Splash isn't because it's all terrible, but because it seems like the team was trying waaaay too hard to shove humor in, and it's kind of obvious when you're relying on an overabundance of jokes to carry your narrative as opposed to a well-written plot. To use TTYD - it'd be like if every companion was the Yoshi, and there was no plotline like Vivian's or Bobbery's. Or if the brick joke of "someone screws up Mario's name and continues to call them by the wrong name for the rest of the game" applied to nearly every NPC instead of just a few senile-adjacent ones. Even with the few characters that did that in TTYD, I still felt like the joke was wearing thin pretty early on. Color Splash having some good, even great, jokes doesn't mean the writing overall is good. It means they threw a ton of jokes at the wall, and some managed to stick.

Seriously, why have we gotten nothing since Other M? I don't understand. Did Other M doing poorly kill the series, despite the fact that people mostly complained about what it did differently and the melodrama that's super easy to just NOT have in the next one?
