Heres the thing that I'm not sure the creators of the recent Mario RPGs have realized yet. Mario RPGs are at their best when the main villian isn't Bowser. It allows for some sense of mystery of what you might fight and lets enemys and bosses have some sense of creativity and do whatever they want. For to prove my point lets look at some of the final bosses from the other Mario RPG games in no particular order, We have Bowser Possessed by a Witch followed by the Witch's Soul, An Evil Alien Princesss Turned into a Cthulu-est Abomination, a Demon''s Soul Possessing Peach, An Evil ancient Entity taking the Form of Bowser while at at the core of its form lies an old villain from Mario and Luigi fused with said entity, and.... Ok Super Paper Mario's is so bazaar I can't even describe it... Now lets look at some of the More Recent ones with Spoilers because They're not very exciting. Sticker Star: A shiny Bowser who then becomes a Larger Shinier Bowser Dream Team: Rainbow Bowser Paper Jam: Bowser and Bowser who then fuse together to become Bowser No disrespect to the Bows but In Terms of RPGs they have more room to do whatever they want when he isn't fine final boss or main villian.

The Mario and Luigi series has consistently had Bowser be dethroned, possessed, betrayed, etc. to let those games main villains take over so with Dream Team you expect Antasma to turn on Bowser and take over in the end, but Bowser instead betraying Antasma was surprising and fresh within the context of a Mario & Luigi game.

Can'tThinkofBetterName Fair enough, but the point still remains that we've had too many Bowsers as Final Bosses lately. I'm dying for the return of other worldly entities that fills the hearts of men with terror. I've grown to fond of Bowser to really be scared of him. If he actually did ever take over the world I doubt it would end in its destruction unlike some of the other ones I've mentioned.

+MilesDaFoo616 I think, that Bowser from the original Paper Mario is a really good fight, because it's the best that particular matchup has ever been, in my opinion.. It also helps that the music is super rad, and that the whole game kind of builds up to it. I like that It's just Bowser with a Kirby Weapon vs. Mario with an Anti-Kirby weapon. It certainly isn't as interesting as the last boss of TTYD though, I'll give it that.

Idea for the next Mario & Luigi game: The bros start off fighting Bowser as normal, and promptly beat him up. Then Bowser storms back off to his castle in a huff, as we see his minions going about their daily routine and trying to cheer up their boss. We see Kamek having a chat with His Nastiness, the Koopalings going off to boss around some goombas, and so on. Suddenly, the Castle is under attack! A fleet of airships is attacking, but not the "Galleons with Propellers" we're used to Bowser using. They could be blimps or whatever, point is they're obviously not Bowser's. The ships blast the castle down and take out Bowser and his forces. Bowser gets taken onto one of the ships and whisked away. It turns out that this attack was from the Dark Lady "Made for This Game." She is on a campaign to expand her empire, and plans on using Bowser's dark magic to do so. Now, Mario and Luigi must help Bowser's subjects to save him from the evil Princess. The setting could be mostly novel, since they need to enter a brand new kingdom. Bowser's underlings can help with Bros attacks like in Bowser's Inside Story, and the side characters could be the one-dimensional recurring enemies we've been jumping on for years. "It's strange to find myself awaiting your presence, my rival, but here we are. Wait, what do you mean you don't recognize me? I'm Boom Boom, your archnemesis! We must have fought each other a couple dozen times by now! Remember that time Bowser conquered some places before Peach? We first met then, in 1988! You don't remember? You just tought I was a regular but obese minion? Oh..."

I recently picked up tyd after growing up with the M&L games, and I can safely say that you're overhyping it to the brim. It's hardly even in the top 6 Mario rpg's, let alone best of all toiym like some say. The blocking is wonky and hardly ever works, even when I was at end game it worked 1/3 times, the timing on the special moves are clunky and from beginning to end the exp was pitiful. Seriously, I had an easier time grinding in the original dragon quest (ESPECIALLY when getting prepared for the 100 pipe challenge.) Don't get me wrong, it is still a very fun game, the story is pretty damn good, the characters are widespread and all 3 dimensional, (pun intended) and the combat, while clunky, is still enjoyable at times.7/10, would recommend, but not mandatory.

+Wobben Buffet hey partners in time was awesome, the settings were nicely designed, a lot of the cut-scenes were heartbreaking, horrifying, awesome and memorable, and the characters were great especially the shroobs for being some of the darkest and most terrifying villains in the series. the only way this game is a middle child is if it's between paperjam, dream team, superstar saga and bowsers inside story on the scale of worst to best.

Coming from someone that has only played part of Superstar Saga and Dream Team, Paper Jam is a pretty good RPG, imo. While I do agree that the cutout battles can get a bit tedious, I like how the normal battles throw in two of each type of enemy, with both the 3D and Paper variations having their own unique attack patterns. I also like the battle and exploration style of Paper Mario; it gives me Metroidvania vibes whenever I discover a new ability with him.

I loved the M&L rpg series, partially because the original was one of my favorite Gameboy Advanced games, partially because they actually made Luigi an important person as opposed to the "Player 2" and partially because of Fawful. And the new games are okay, but they could be better, less tedious. And with more Fawful.

I have a 'useful, therefore never use' (or at least, could be useful but fucked if I know when or how or why therefore never use) story, I was playing a game of D&D once, and the DM awarded me a deck of cards that summoned a harmless illusion of a particular creature depending on the kind of card you draw, think Ace of Spades = Lich or a 1 of hearts = Goblin or whatever, of which the DM was mystifyingly proud of, proclaiming it to potentially be a massively powerful item. I immediately noted the keyword being 'potentially', thing is I have no idea what card summons what kind of illusion, nor do I have any idea of what order the deck of cards was in (I was given a physical deck of cards to represent the item) which begs the question: how on earth am I know when to use such a thing when I don't know what's going to happen? So I never used it, because I'm the sort who accepts the randomness of the dice, but prefer some degree of certainty in my actions. Every single time I was faced with an obstacle of some description I was asked "Why not use a card?" To which I would always answer "I don't fucking know what's going to happen if I do use a card, so how am I to plan around that?" I might as well just toss a coin or play a slot machine to determine success or failure, at which point it's just gambling. I have no idea why he was so proud of it, I guess because he has thinks Illusion magic is the most powerful so it resonated with him or something, for all I know maybe he's right I haven't played long enough to judge that.

KidSnivy69 That's kind of true! There was a lot of things I found about BIS to be very forgettable. Like after playing it, I forgot about the whole blorbs epidemic that took place in the game. All I remembered was "Fawful is evil, dark bowser exists, time to take them down".

In my cool individual unprejudiced opinion, I think Paper Mario TTYD far Excels in a memorable story, great lovable characters, fantastic writing, fun visuals, and excellent partners and badge systems. But... I think that M&L BIS makes very smart sacrifices for amazing ideas. First of all, it's outstanding combat system. Paper Mario TTYD's combat system was very tactical, but it's far emphasis on random Luck was always an issue that I downright hated. The Crowd throwing items, good and Bad, you ultimately had control of, and I loved it. Giant unpredictable boulders coming from nowhere confusing you and your partner on the bottom ten floors of the pit of 100 trials? SCREW THAT! And don't even get me STARTED on the Fog. M&L BIS, on the other hand, throws all unfortunate luck out the window, and the very little luck present in it's combat system ALWAYS works in your favor! It's always skill and experience that pulls you through battles... (Continued)

Once you enter a boss battle for the first time, you gotta pull yourself together and learn those attack patterns! If you're dosing off, you will have a much harder time, and the game rewards you for mastering what your boss throws at you! What I mean is, have you skipped the game without grinding? Well, your in luck! Every single attack in the game is avoidable, taking NO damage! You can fight the final boss with each bro and bowser having only 1HP, and you can do that because this game is not based on how well did you grind, (although a helpful factor) it's based on your SKILL, your TACTICS, not LUCK! It's 100% all your fault when you lose! You won't find and confused status here, and they are actually very balanced. The Bros get a free pass for any of them because each one can still hold a battle entirely on his own, and Bowser's rage increases your offense when it lowers your defense. It's really neat actually. here's an example of just how bare bones the story ultimately is: late in the game, the bowser's start plotting against each other, presumably to betray each other at some point. However, it never happens, you fight them both together at the same time whereupon they fuse and then you beat them and the game's over, which means this foreshadowing of their planning to stab each other in the back is completely pointless and lead to nothing. but, on the plus side, the Kooplaings as they're called get to do something finally and actually get to speak.

I'm guessing that the Mario franchise has been so thoroughly squeezed dry at this point that when they were trying to come up with a new game the boss came into the room and asked what the new game was going to be called and Terry (I realize he would likely have been Japanese but I bet his name is still Terry) desperately glanced around the room and just blurted out the first thing he could think of when his eyes passed over the printer.

The two Peach's escape did sort of work. There was a small hiccup with Bowser Jr., but both princesses did manage to escape from Bower's castle before the end of the game. Oh, spoiler by the way.
