In essence, the game is a metaphor for what the current generation of gaming has become. It's all flashy graphics, and grinding, but without any inherent direction or aim. Perhaps the developers were trying to capture the whole feel of what conventional explorers went through when discovering new land; simply going there and proving it existed was enough, it didn't matter what you saw, provided you actually saw it, but modern gaming isn't that insightful - we've been conditioned to seek a tangible goal, rather than just smell the flowers. I suppose the developers listened to that whole notion where gamers were tired of being reminded of a goal within their sandbox games and wanted to aim for immersion and true freedom of roaming, but then forgot to put in some boundaries or structure to the sandbox, not realising that a sandbox without a box is just sand, and to put it like Anakin Skywalker, it's rough, coarse and irritating, and it gets everywhere.

How to improve NMS : - Add base management and settlement construction (similar to Fallout 4's thing) - Add a variety of gun upgrade. (i wish my multitool could also be a sniper?) - Add in-game factions based on the 3(4?) main alien race - Which in terms leads to faction wars - AND conquering planets/systems - Add multiplayer (works really well with faction stuff) - Polish some mechanics (ie : the life support system is boring as hell, but also make plutonium more scarse, rare my ass) - Add actual fights agaisnt alien races - Add more complexity to space combat (being able to instantly recharge your ship shield is hand holding x100) - A better HUD/UI that isn't ctrl+c from Destiny (seriously though) - Add an actual ending to the game... - Let us crash our ship (yup, i want to do that) - And honestly, they might as well have given us 1Millions planets, but with the aforementioned features, i would have been happy - 3/10, too much space IGN

@Amalga_Heart8 жыл бұрын
Jaime Stark Thanks for the assumption about someone you've never met. I've been playing MMOs in particular since Everquest (aka, the era of COMPLICATED MMOs, they've gotten much simpler nowadays) and normal RPGs since the very first Final Fantasy on the NES (back when RPGs actually had challenge, instead of the "could beat it while asleep because the bad guys attack by dying in my general direction" ones these days). If it's a big MMO... and often also smaller ones... I've probably played it. Except EVE, I hate that one. JRPGs I dont play as much these days; they're too easy to hold my attention when I could just play the older ones. Besides, what you say there changes... a whole lot of nothing. MMO *and* JRPG gameplay usually boils down to: 1. stomp enemies, 2. get items WOO LOOT, 3. next dungeon/area/thing. A bit repetetive, wouldnt you say? You go punch enemies (usually via a very uninteresting combat system) to get new stuff so that you can go through the next area and punch enemies to get better stuff and.... yeah. Sound familiar? Also, NMS actually does have a narrative (which actually starts to suggest that there's a goal OTHER than the center of the galaxy, if you read far enough into it, not that most people bothered to). But there's a difference: It doesnt wave it at you via cutscenes like a JRPG. You have to look for and READ it instead of it just handing it to you. Mind-boggling concept, yeah? Having to EXPLORE to learn stuff in an EXPLORATION game? Yeah. Mind-boggling how the narrative might go down that road. Mind-boggling indeed. **facepalm** I seriously hate this gaming generation. So much.

Lol why do you feel the devs are so bad? I have never encountered a bug or any other problems.
@ShadowFox378 жыл бұрын
ED vet here. ED suffers a lot of the same "nothing to do" problem, and the devs are notoriously horrible at actual game design. They've built a fantastic core and the fundamentals of flying a spaceship and feeling like you are flying a fucking spaceship are second to none. The problem is that there is nothing to do when flying your fucking spaceship and the devs continue to add a lot more meaningless features that are bland, boring, and grindy.

I found that you can learn the local languages on each planet and solar system. You can learn the history of the people's and the relations between them all. I found it very interesting however it definitely took a lot of walking around each planet. I mean at one point I was 8 real time hours of walking away from my ship. I did end up finding ways to make my ship spawn near me which made it easier but a few times I found ships that we're better than the starter ship or my current ship and I'd just repair and take them. But I found the exploring to be fun even if it was monotonous at times. But I can definitely see why many didn't like the game due to the lack of a defined goal.

The thing about No Man's Sky is that it's basically the building blocks of an amazing game, without the actual game. The ultimate goal of getting to the center of the universe does provide a lot more structure than sand-boxes usually have; you fly from system to system, having to touch down on planets for fuel or to repair your ship, which is a cool premise that feels right out of a Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica kind of show. The problem is, with those sci-fi TV shows about intrepid explorers needing to touch down for some essential part to continue their journey, that essential part leads to actual adventures; maybe it's owned by some alien civilization that needs you to solve their problems before they'll give it up, or it's hidden in the lair of some horrible space monster. In No Man's Sky, the essential items you need to travel are about 5 steps away from wherever you land. Actually exploring planets is completely optional, but if you select that option, what does it get you? Not much, really. All this is to say that No Man's Sky *could* be a much more fun game with just a little added content. Being able to build things on planets (especially something that would let you actually return to any world you particularly liked) would help. So would a feature that would let you actually *take* creatures and plants from planets, maybe to display in your own space terrarium that other players could visit. Unlike Yahtzee, I totally *am* down for experiencing the raw mystery of the cosmos, but discovery for discovery's sake feels hollow when there's no one to share it with. It seems like the only point is to be like an old European explorer, going into new lands and getting to name everything after himself, but the appeal of being Magellan is that people actually sail Magellan's strait. No one will ever even find Planet Michael because of the sheer size of the universe, but even if they did, they wouldn't care, because there's nothing significantly unique about it when there's trillions of other planets in the game.

Some spit poison, some can't be touched, other are super fast, some turn invisible, some fly away, some burrow underground , some get a running charge, and some just steal from you. Well, as I said, I only just bought it, so the game's history doesn't really matter much to me except as an interesting historical footnote. I do think it's a little unfair to group an indie studio with the practices of Bethesda, Activision/Blizzard, and other AAA studios. They've made plenty of games, they know what their schedules are going to look like, they have plenty of money to do it properly, and they know they've got lots of fans who will buy it no matter what who they're exploiting. For an indie game studio, personally I'm more willing to assume it was incompetence or budget shortfalls rather than a deliberate strategy.

Reminds me of Project Zomboid. It's been in alpha for years and the steam workshop has content that the devs promised to release years ago, like survivors and vehicles. Can you find them in game? no. But you can in the workshop. And they work perfectly well. (I guess it gets updated very often tho) The thing with Project Zomboid is that it's a brilliant base. A zombie RPG relying on a craft system, with you having to watch out for things like weight load (your character will get a bad back), disinfecting and changing bandages regularly, dressing warm, not eating raw food, staving off boredom... Like, it goes into small details like having a tissue on you if you have a cold, because sneezing attracts zombies. After a while the electricity and water cut off, food goes off an so on. The characters have traits, too, on a point system. They can be short-sighted, hard-of hearing, deaf, obese, athletic, etc etc. The game has not a lot of it, but there are lots of useless little items you'll sometimes find on zombies or in homes, like jewels or toys. The problem? ITS S O B O R I N G. Your aim is to survive. That's it. Sure it's not easy, especially with the system making it so there are more and more zombies as time goes on, but once you have your shelter and farm etc, there's nothing left.

I give Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door a 4/5, just a solid RPG.

Hello from 5 years in the future. No Mans Sky is now one of the most content rich space sims on the market. The little game that could.

This game has improved since this review, sadly, Many will not give it a second chance. To each their own I guess. I've really enjoyed my time playing it. PSVR and PC VR make this game amazing. That said, some games (No Man's sky) included are not for every one. You find gems and then you find normal games. Neir, The Last Guardian, Death Stranding and many others are outstanding games, but not everyone will like them, just like some will enjoy Call of duty or Battlefield, more of a battlefield guy myself. 😊 Its all a matter of opinion. Enjoy what you play, even if others don't understand. Life's to short to fuss over the small things. Miss you, Spc Hams SFC Gray
