As we near the end of the Crystal Palace, like us take a moment to appreciate just how clever this place is. Like, anything you can do with a mirror puzzle has been somehow crammed into this dungeon, even though said mirrors aren't actually mirrors - they're just sheets of ice with Duplighosts behind them. Honestly, that realization just makes this dungeon even better. That fight with the two Magikoopas and the two Clubbas was home to my second game over of the playthrough. My fault for going in without healing, and having to replay half the dungeon... This chapter does not mess around when it comes to difficulty. It really is a step up. I guess it makes sense. We are nearing endgame...

Well, yes... but I wouldn't say they did EVERYTHING. They could have had a part with visual obstructions so you could only see either Mario or the "mirror" at various sections of a maze or something. They could have had a part where your "reflection" keeps triggering an obstacle, so you need to use Bow to confuse the duplighost on the other side so you can get past. They could have had invisible bottomless pits or spike traps that are visible in the "mirror". It is impressive, though, how many variations of mirror puzzles they jammed into this game, to the point that it's hard to think of many other things they could have done.

I loved Dinosaurs as a kid, and as soon as I saw the Albino Dinos I loved them! I played SMW on my GBA after I played PM64, so I thought Dino Rhinos were the variation species and Albino Dinos were the original design! Speaking of Dino Rhinos, I was super happy to see them finally return in Colour Splash and Origami King :D

it's just weird how Dino Rhino's and Rex have never appeared in another mainline Mario game after their debut in Mario World, I mean they did bring back Reznor in NSMB2, but still, it's a shame they don't show up as often

Goombario's Log Day 58: After more climbing and mirror puzzles solved, we finally reached the summit of Crystal Palace. Now there's nothing left standing in our path to go and save the final Star Spirit. We're going to do it. We're actually going to do it. Kooper's Log Day 53: OK THAT'S IT! I am 99.9% convinced Mario has it out for me now! Those Duplighosts turned into Koopa Koot, Kolorado, Goompapa, and Luigi saying they were me. And when it was just down to fake Luigi and me, he hits me instead! What the shell Mario!? Bombette's Log Day 52: I gotta say, it was pretty amusing seeing all those Duplighosts as other folks we met on our travels. Their impressions, while obvious it's fake, are still pretty impression all things considered. But, yeah. Poor Kooper got whacked again. I feel bad for the guy. Parakarry's Log Day 47: If we have to trek through more of this palace any longer, my wings might freeze up and fall off. I'm not used to staying out in the cold for this long and this palace ain't helping the situation. Let's just find the Star Spirit and get out of here. Bow's Log Day 36: Hmm, fascinating. It appears that these Duplighosts can become anyone on the fly, even without a clear reference point. I have got to learn more about these guys and how they're able to shapeshift. Watt's Log Day 26: So, today's the day I learn to be cool from Lester. I'm really nervous. But I have to be strong. I'll also have to help him be strong too. Captain Sushie's Log Day 20: Brrrr. A fish on ice is never a good place to be. Us sea creatures ain't built for these frigid temps we are. We'd best hurry it up before me fins freeze up and fall off. Lakilester's Log Day 9: So, today's the day I learn to be strong from Watt. I'm really nervous. But I have to keep cool. I'll also have to help her be cool too. *in the final room before the Boss* Goombario: *adjusting his eyepatch* So, this is it huh? Sushie: Seems to be so. You still holding up with just one eye? Goombario: I've adjusted to it now. It's not much of a hinderance now. Bow: Oh, really? Then who's on your right side now? Goombario: Um? Kooper? Bow: No, I am. Kooper's in the corner icing his head. Kooper: *with a chuck of ice on his head* Why did he hit me? I've been with him for over 50 days and the guy doesn't recognize me? Bombette: Yeah, seems pretty weird huh? Karry: *shaking* I-I-In any case. We're almost done. Just get the Star Spirit and we're out of here. Goombario: Yes indeed. Say, has anyone seen Watt and Lester around? Or are they somewhere on my right where I can't see them. Karry: Actually, where are those two? *meanwhile* Lester: Ok, Watt. If you want to be cool, you're going to have to talk the talk. You can't let others push you around. You need a backbone, and some ice cold burns. Watt: How does that work? Lester: Like this. 'Dude, you ruined my haircut! It'll takes weeks to fix!' Oh really? I am so so sorry. So sorry that you have nothing better to do in life. *smirks* Watt: Ha! That's funny! Lester: Here's another good one. 'You will pay for your insolence!' You know, I've got the graphic settings turned all the way up, and I still can't find who gives a shell. *smirks* Watt: *more laughing* That's a good one! Lester: And now, for my favorite comeback. 'You're an amphole man!' Well you know what they say, you are what you eat. *smirks* Watt: ... I don't get it. Lester: Trust me, you say that, and everyone will be speechless. Watt: Ok. Thanks for the advice Lester. Lester: I've still got more things to teach you, but that should be enough for today. Watt: Ok then. Now it's my turn to tutor you. ... Now that I think about it, I didn't think this plan through since I'm only 2 years old. ... How sensitive are you to lightning? Lester: Very. Unfortunately. Watt: What about your spinies? Can they be charged up? *tries supercharging a spiny, but it doesn't work and the spiny just gasps for air* Lester: ... Yeah we really didn't think this through. Watt: Oh it's hopeless! *leans against his cloud* I'm sorry Lester. I want to return the favor for what you're doing for me, but I can't seem to help you in anyway. *suddenly, Watt's energy starts aggitating Lester's cloud, turning it grey* Lester: Whoa! *pulls back* Watch where you're leaning. You okay there bud? *pushes down on the cloud, and lightning starts shooting out from below* Lester and Watt: AH!! What the...!? Lester: *realization hits* Watt, are you pondering what I'm pondering? Watt: I think so Lester, but where are we going to find seven albino dinos at this time of night? Lester: No not that. *whispers to her his idea* Watt: Oh. Oh! Lester: Watt. I think we just found a solution. How much room to you have inside my cloud? Watt: *goes inside the cloud* It's a lot more room than the lantern I was in. And it's a lot cozier in here. Lester: Crystal King or whatever your name is, you'd better watch out, you'd better not cry, cause Lester and Watt are coming to take back the Star Spirit. And there's nothing you can do to... Watt: Oh My Goomba! Is that a sundae bar in here!? Your cloud is awesome Lester! Lester: Focus Watt. We have a mission here. Watt: *pops out* Right. Crystal King, here we come!

Considering this might be the last time we run into Duplighosts here, I wanted to see what Goombario's Tattles were for the partner's we'd haven't seen tattled yet. (Kooper, Parakarry, Bow, Watt, and Lakilester) Kooper: It's a Duplighost disguised as Kooper. Max HP: 15 This imposter almost looks better than the original! Ha! Its disguise is pretty much perfect. Its attack power is exactly the same as the character it's imitating. It's probably not very difficult for this Duplighost to disguise itself as Kooper. After all, our pal is pretty unusual looking. It'll attack us with its shell, just like the regular Kooper. You'll have the best luck beating it if you flip it. Parakarry: It's a Duplighost disguised as Parakarry. Max HP: 15 He looks even more intelligent as an enemy. Its disguise is pretty much perfect. Its attack power is exactly the same as Parakarry's. Don't underestimate him, Mario. He looks pretty serious. Bow: It's a Duplighost disguised as Bow. Max HP: 15 Its disguise is pretty much perfect. Its attack power is exactly the same as Bow's. Look, you've seen her in action. Do you really want to know what a Smack attack feels like? Watt: It's a Duplighost disguised as Watt. Max HP: 15 Its disguise is pretty much perfect. Its attack power is exactly the same as the character it's imitating. You know how Watt is shocking? Same goes for this Duplighost. Lakilester: It's a Duplighost disguised as Lakilester. Max HP: 15 It's hard to take him seriously. Its disguise is pretty much perfect. Its attack power is exactly the same as Lakilester's. It's tough to dodge his Spiny Flip, so pay attention.

Ooooh, having Watt use her abilities to give Lester a storm cloud is actually a really clever idea!! Aaaaa I love how their bond development is going, it’s super sweet seeing how much Lester cares for her, and how badly Watt wants to help him in return - I can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode to see how this turns out! You’re doing great!! Also, gotta love how Goombario basically roasts half the party lol. However, this is missing my favourite tattle, the one where he tattles a Duplighost transformed into himself. He basically asks Mario if that actually what he looks like, saying that he’s been trying to work out to get in shape for adventuring and asking if he actually looks so pudgy lol

11:40 THIS FRIGGIN PUZZLE... When I first played this as a kid, it took me FOREVER to realize that there was no glass between the two sides of the room this time. I kept exiting the room and entering through the other door, not knowing I could just WALK back and forth. But of course, if you exit the room, the puzzle resets. So I kept getting really confused about what to do. Man, did I feel dumb...

As much as you bag on Bombette, she actually a good partner. Her bomb attack is the most powerful attack at that point in the game (Bomb also instantly knocks over the Koopa Bros. in a single attack leaving Mario open to attack them once flipped over) and the most powerful first strike you'll have at any point. At super rank she has your most powerful (ground based) AOE attack until ultra rank becomes a thing. She will one-shot Pyro Guys and clear the field of them in one attack unlike anyone else can at the time. A Power Bomb and Multibounce eliminates all Clubbas on the field in one turn. Mega Bomb is more reliable than Tsunami for only one more FP when facing fire enemies (though most will be effected by Power Bomb just fine). There is also an enemy that she absolutely wrecks coming up in the final chapter. Her issue is that she is pure offense with nothing else and thirsty for FP, but she is far from bad at the mission of defeating enemies.

One of my absolute favorite details going through this chapter is if you try and walk away from the duplighost disguise segments; they'll collectively pick Mario up and bring him back, keeping you from outright walking away from it.

I could've sworn in Chugga's first LP of this game, he got really annoyed with the Albino Dino puzzle. Something along the lines of having to go back through the door repeatedly just so you could talk to a Dino or push a block. At the very end of the puzzle, he runs through the middle of the room on accident and suddenly realizes he didn't need to go through the door every time. I thought this would be a point he brought up in the video, because it's pretty funny, and was disappointed to see he didn't mention it. Turns out, my brain made up this whole memory, and it never actually happened. He did realize there wasn't a mirror, but that was at the very start of the puzzle and he wasn't ever annoyed lmao Memories are fickle things, aren't they?

I've always thought the Albino Dinos should've been turned into plushies, or if they ever were, allow said plushies to be distributed globally. They remind me of Reznor from Super Mario World on the SNES, and Reznor is still one of my most favorite enemies in the entire Mario franchise. Imagine having a big, plush beanbag chair designed to look like Reznor and another sitting right next to it in the image of an Albino Dino.

And we're getting really close to finishing the chapter but this area once you actually know what to do this can take upwards to 30 minutes. 1:40 That stupid wall just taunted me for at least 5 years until i finally got it. 2:46 The badge system is amazing but man did they really took it to the next level in TTYD. 3:43 Hoo this badge is one of the badges that i don't use even though it's useful. 4:28 Gee i wonder who's the real Kooper? 🤔 it's really hard to find out. But my biggest gripe with Double/Triple Dip is that the inventory is so limited and i'm not the biggest user of items except for specific situations. 10:26 Although not everyone is as hardcore as you to just have less HP than the norm. 11:16 Emile... sometimes i worry about Kooper because of how you show love. 14:43 I'm so bummed out that they never made it into the game it would've been better than the puzzle that feels so last minute. Next time we'll face off against the King of the Palace for the final Star Spirit!

I've always found the Crystal Palace so interesting, that once I made a draft of it as a Source Engine map, complete with functional mirrors, and all the puzzles generally simulated. ...I also applied the Minecraft style to the entire place, because reasons. If not, don't guess wrong. (personally, duplikooper would be better to fight since he is like any other koopa to turn over.)

One thing I think TTYD really improved upon was doing away with most of the higher tier badges like Power Quake and Mega Smash and instead opting for a stacking badge system, almost totally avoiding the issue of some badges becoming obsolete

At this point you we're keeping Kooper as your favorite character. It pretty useful for me just looking what these statues look like kind of got me stuck for a very once in a while, and I already figure out the solution to my problem. You'd we're only allowed to talk to them when they'd turn around facing to Mario, and then the statues starts moving along with the Albino Dino. Took me like 10 minutes to solve that situation. I'd was able to push the statues by activating all three of those pressure plates.

There is a rom hack for this game called Paper Mario pro mode, which restored a lot of unused stuff like badges and certain enemie like the Albinos to the game as well as added in some new stuff like new badges, new Chuck Quizmo questions to answer for more Star pieces, Boos as actual enemies in the sewers, a true final rematch with Jr. Trooper back at the Playground, a blue pipe linking Peaches Raised castle to the ground below, to cut back on backtracking, and new rooms to certain areas like Shooting star summit including a temple/altar/shrine dedicated to chapter boss refights where they have more health and are probably more deadly!

I could have sworn that P-Up/D-Down and P-Down/D-Up actually have a bonus if you equip both of them. At the very least, I remember when I was little I equipped both of them out of curiosity, and I found myself actually dealing more damage and taking less damage, like equipping both gave up +1 attack and +1 defense without the drawback.

in a recent playthrough of Paper Mario, i discovered that trying to leave when your partners are being impersonated results in the real one and the fakes picking you up and bringing you back. Yes even with bombette.

Unlike Double Dip, I don't find Triple Dip that good. For one, like with Double Dip, your FP doesn't get refunded if you don't use all three items. For two, Paper Mario 64 is lacking in item variety, so you can't do silly strategies like using Trial Stew to automatically get into Peril and combine that with other items to super buff Mario for a big onslaught. And for three, you're capped at 10 items, meaning you're using up a third of your inventory all at once. However, there is one fight in the final chapter where Triple Dip is godly, and I'll make sure to point it out. That fight with the Clubbas and Magikoopas is why I champion Multibounce over Power Quake. You *still* run into flying enemies now and again, so being able to hit them is more valuable than bypassing Defense, which is almost non-existent against trash mobs. And it's more cost-effective. P-Up, D-Down is a Badge I honestly should've used more. It's essentially a cheaper Power Plus, and if you kill everything before they have a chance to attack, you don't need defense. It's not recommended against bosses unless you're a speedrunner, though.

P-Up D-Down is actually especially good against bosses, it doesn't matter if you're speedrunning or not (or challenge running which casuals somehow forget about even though it's bigger than speedrunning in Paper Mario), sometimes that -1 defence can actually work in your favour like if you have 10HP and the boss normally does 8 damage (Jr. Troopa 6 for example will always open up with an attack that normally does 8 damage), the -1 defence from the badge will increase that to 9 putting you in peril straight away allowing for the destructive peril strats. And even in situations where the -1 defence will do more harm than good, you can still counter it by equipping a Damage Dodge so that if you're consistent at blocking, it's as if your defence is normal while also getting a +1 attack increase all for 5 total BP (2 for P-Up D-Down and 3 for Damage Dodge), which is still less BP than a single Power Plus or Defend Plus.

With the Bombette illusion, if you smashed the wrong Bombette you have to fight the fakes. Good way to earn experience.

I played through this place just last night. While I was going through the place, I let the duplighosts transform into my partners to, y'know, see Goombario's Tattles on them. Because reading flavor text like that is super cool! After that, naturally we fought them and found that they just use the partners' standard attacks. Because of this, I believe Bow and Watt to be a most dangerous to face. Bow for the fact that if you miss a single guard command for her smacks, you get comboed into the rest of them. And Watt because, incredibly, she can ignore your defenses. I had a water block up and I still got hit with four damage (If you can guard against this, I couldn't seem to pull it off, I'll admit that). Oh, and she's flying and electrified. Very dangerous. But speaking of Watt, it's how I found out that her Electro Dash seems to knock them out of their disguises. Needless to say, I loved fighting these guys. They're radically awesome! Gonna miss those guys.

Ha ha ha, that encounter with all the randomly disguised Duplighosts is ludicrous. At this point, you want this dungeon to be done. Only when you get to the Albino Dino room do you realize the worst is yet to come. Not the Crystal King at the end of it, although like Grodus in TTYD, he is hard to beat if you don’t do ‘shield things management’. It’s the Albino Dino puzzle right before him. Younger me is screaming from the inside remembering how frustrated she was with that tedious puzzle.
