I forsee a boom of people moving to Mexico very soon. The remote working ability, the crazy soaring house/living expenses in north america is not sustainable. Amazing weather, amazing food, friendly people and the beach. How can you say no? I already know I'm gonna retire and spend a bulk of my time in Mexico

I'm extremely lucky to have found good housing years ago for a good price, and my management company works with me to keep my rent affordable, but I know they won't do that forever. I'm trying to figure out a way to meet the income requirements to get a temporary residency. I've wanted to move there forever, but had an affordable and comfortable lifestyle here. That is quickly falling apart, and I see Mexico as my only alternative. It's sad we seniors have to leave our own country to find an affordable place to live.

Please keep in mind that YOUR cost of living will depend on- your housing choices, your eating out, where you buy your groceries, whether you drive or use public transport, your medical history and how often you need to visit a doctor or other, your lifestyle and whether you splurge or save every month. One can very easily live in Puerto Morelos on $28,000 pesos a month in 2023 without having to sacrifice quality of life. However, you can also easily spend a lot of money if you don't stick to your budget. This includes renting on Airbnb vs a regular place with a lease. Airbnb's are expensive. Learning Spanish and looking for rentals where locals look is key to finding good rentals that aren't very expensive. And that's anywhere in Mexico.
@melisherwood5300

This is true; one has to look carefully, make some contacts with rental agents, make friends, etc, and then take your time to find affordable housing. For example, the first few times I stayed, I got better and better deals from just getting to know people. I was surprised though at how expensive the AirBnB's were on both the port and Colonia sides...but the port side in high season is a lot. I also found that this year the Wed market prices seemed much higher. I sometimes wonder if I am being charged "gringo" prices. You are correct about food choices; in my case, I need gluten free so that will increase costs. And if one prefers the certified organic products, there again the prices jump lot; it is the same where I am in from in Canada. Probably the best deals are the rent costs. They don't seem to be a big bargain but better than what I have seen back home. Health care in Canada of course is mostly a non issue but if one wants supplements, herbs, etc, there again they add to the costs. It would be a good idea for someone like me who spends a lot on food, and health to do a detailed comparison but I have not done so as of yet. So far, after travelling to many destinations in Mexico, I find that I feel healthiest in PM - I like being at sea level, the lack of pollution, fresh air etc. It seems that the Mayan Riviera overall is not a cheap destination. Thanks for the videos Marianna.

When I lived in Playa del Carmen, I rented a two bedroom upper floor apartment with its own terrace 4,000 pesos a month. This is around 200 USD, so if you look for deals you can easily live there for less than 1,500 USD a month.

We live in PM and have for a year. We have been looking at your videos to see where we are moving to next. It’s very hot and humid here. Plus there is so much saragossa year round now. Unfortunately the prices of rent, food and transportation keeps going up, Just in the year we have been here. A lot of people don’t own cars here just ride their bikes, walk or take the Coltevio. It’s very easy to make friend with other expats and locals.

Puerto Morelos is beautiful, and a fantastic alternative to Cancun. I spent some time in Morelos back 20 or so years ago when it was more of a sleepy village. We lived in Playa del Carmen from 2011-15 & friends moved to PM. We go there annually & love the quiet on the north beach about a mile from town. The only thing that was not mentioned that gives pause to many is the sargassum (seaweed) that is seasonal, but very stinky & annoying for water folks. If you don't want this, visit Cozumel or Isla Mujeres during the season.

If I was gonna go back to Mexico , I would choose a city in the hills with better climate that’s close to the beach or just visit the beach area when weather is nice as flights are cheap within Mexico . The beaches are so hot and humid as the weather has been changing. I have been going to Playa Del Carmen for last 6 winters but last year was unbearable. The scams get worse and worst as well. Could you please provide a link to short term rentals if you have one? The prices you quoted are much lower and reasonable than properties through airbnb. We would like to come and stay for at least two weeks in February. We have stayed at many different all inclusives, but for a longer stay, a rental would be much more affordable. Thank you.

The examples I showed are for long term rentals. For short term rentals I do recommend airbnb or booking.com. You're going to pay a higher amount because they offer the convenience of giving you something shorter term. I would recommend renting an airbnb for a month and once you are actually here, then you can talk to the locals and ask around for a landlord that is willing to do something month to month that is furnished.

You don't seem to mention that those US prices are based on a certain exchange rate. At this moment the exchange rate is not in our (the US) favor, so all prices have gone up approximately 20% (exchange rate was 20 to 1 now it is 17 to 1) Also, anything American sized is 16000 pesos to 25000 pesos (furnished and with a landlord who will fix things that break) if you are looking at the houses of three bedroom or more.
@MexicoRelocationGuide
@MexicoRelocationGuide Жыл бұрын
I mention on every single video, with rental examples, that it is approximate and can change based on the exchange rate. That's why I always include the Mexican peso amount. So you can calculate that if the peso has fluctuated 😉

Informative video but please move your camera much more slowly

A good tip is to choose a slower play rate- for example choose your settings to play this video at .75x the time and it will slow it down a bit. :)

I am seriously considering moving to Puerto Morelos from Florida. I need assistance with information. I feel I would be happier to retire there and I think I can afford to live there alone on $2k monthly income. Does that work?

Is it still inundated with seaweed?
@MexicoRelocationGuide

It’s seasonal. Currently there is seaweed. But you would have to check it almost daily to see what the daily sargassum levels are

Well what do you say about recent violence by drug cartels in Cancun?
@MexicoRelocationGuide
@MexicoRelocationGuide Жыл бұрын
I say it’s unfortunate. And yet I still recommend this area to people because the truth of the matter is, the cartels are not after regular Joe Shmoe. Just ask the millions of people living in the area if they plan to move or leave. They won’t. The people affected by this are almost always somehow involved

Obviously. Marianna don’t recommend places are unsafe. Besides this is like a town. Always you can google for the safe and KZbin videos. Where people who lives there let you know. How it’s is

It's as safe as any other city that I recommend living in Mexico. Of course you can be at the wrong place at the wrong time anywhere, but we think Puerto Morelos is very safe

A few years ago we stayed at a hotel in Puerto Morelos for 10 days. It was impossible to swim in the water due to the rocks, not the mention the sargassum and some kind of fish that would bite really hard!! We weren’t the only ones getting bitten because people would scream and run out of the water. It only happened to us there. Not in Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres, so we assumed it was a local thing of Puerto Morelos. Also, the roads were mostly dirt with gigantic potholes that would wreck the front end of a vehicle if not going slow enough and paying attention to avoid the holes. All in all, we didn’t liked it. Sorry, but no thanks. We couldn’t wait to leave honestly.

It’s not for everyone- plus the sargassum levels are fully seasonal and vary a lot from one week to another. But for some people PM is magical

@MexicoRelocationGuide We go to Mexico every year so I've already braced myself. Lol. We won't need to make very much. We're going to retire in Mexico. I just wanted to find a small job to keep myself busy.

Probably a good idea if you want to keep busy and not worried about the actual income. If that's the case, maybe volunteering would be a better gig

Until the countries contributing to the bloom of sargassum, change, there is no way for Quintana Roo to "solve" it.
