Fact from a Paraguayan abt the paraguayan war: Since most of the men died in battle, children (teenagers and such) went into the battle fields dressed as soldiers so the enemies wouldn’t know they were kids. Since most of the male population had died by the end of the war, women were basically the only reason the country didn’t fall apart completely.
@dicitencellovoyais79144 жыл бұрын
the war was destined to happen since the birth of Paraguay because they hated Brazilians since the time of the Bandeirantes (fortune hunters who broke the Treaty of Tordesillase expanded the Brazilian territory) who attacked them, they said that as punishment the god Tupã transformed these Bandeirantes in blacks people because of their actions, they started to hate Brazilians and it was only in 1864 when Solano Lopez had the largest army in South America, that they could empty that hate against Brazilians, the Paraguayan Aca Iboty were true suicidal psychopaths but the war is made of strategy and that Lopez did not understand, he simply sent men to the battlefields without strategy, when he played the strategist it was even worse as we see in the battle of Tuiuti where he lost 18,000 of his best men (with intellectual capital, etc) and Brazilians lost 3,000 volunteers farmers and slaves african.

i`ve read about 5 books on the subject and my opinion is this, not really, the overwhelming majority of the population that perished was due to famine and disease, the insistence on the continuity of the war by the paraguayan leadership even when defeat was certain has a lot of responsibility for the death tool, in 1867 when the war was far from over and the allied armies were stagnated south of humaita and hadn't even touched paraguayan most populated and resouce rich regions disease and famine were already rampant throughout the country claiming countless lifes, the logistical challenge of the war was overwhelming for a nation with such a small population and limited resources, the paraguayan leadership imposed draconian measures to ensure the allocation of resources and personal for the continuity of the war, in one instancy hundreds of officers were executed for opposing the continuity of the conflict by the paraguayan leadership, and in the later years of the war the paraguayan goverment was fielding a huge amount of child soldiers, also paraguay had to sustain a standing army that fluctuated beteween 40-80.000 troops during the conflict with a population that most conservative estimatives put at 450.000-700,000, cattle and grain to feed such a force placed a monstruous tool on the civil society, and we must always remember massive mortality due to dieseases was a sad reality of most of the XIX century wars, just look at the crimean war a decade earlier for every 10 french soldiers that perished only one died in action, 9 perished to diseases.

I'm Russian, please don't be so rough about the mistakes i might commit, but as far as i've studied, the paraguayan war AKA Tripple Alliance War, wasn't just Brazilian, Argentinian or Paraguayan fault alone, all countries had their share of fault, killing, pillage, and other attrocities were made in both sides, When Paraguay invaded Brazil they looted, murdered and raped, so did Brazil and the other Allies (mostly Argentinians) Brazilians killed children and women, Paraguay not only used kids in the war, but also it is said that kids were used as human child to protect Solano. This wasn't a war for, Honor, Patriotism, Freedom, Independence., and anything else, for what it looked more like, was a war for Peter II's revenge over Paraguayan invasion, and Lopéz was a Dictator that made Paraguay sink, so No Heroes in this one, and... what's the point of wasting time here in KZbin comment section trying to convince some people over a near useless matter?
@Gabriel-sdf8 жыл бұрын
That I coudn't have said any better, and in a war, your main objective is to capture the enemy country capital, even Solano knew, that wasn't much of an option, i think what he'd really wanted was to strengthen Paraguay's position to sue peace with Brazil over a treaty they got a few years earlier, but that propably enraged Peter II, and possibly lead him into want revenge.
@guilhermeroyama88427 жыл бұрын
Peter II was a great leader and a very peaceful man. Solano Lopez left to the brazillian emperor no choice but retaliate,and sadly,the Paraguayan people paid the price for their "illustrous leader". @aguilanegra15027 жыл бұрын
That´s not true. Paraguayan Army at that time was one of the most stronger armies, with troops and officials trained and equipped in Prussia. Pedro II provoked the war with the invasion of Uruguay in support of Venancio Flores rebells, overthrowing a democratic ellected goverment. The defeat of the paraguayan forces was because of the use of ironclad warships by the brazilian navy, the only armada in southamerica with such ships. Besides the British empire send a lot of money cause they want to wipe out the great industrial development of Paraguay, considered a bad example for southamerica. Finally, the Brazilian Army was useless without the Montevideo port, that´s why Pedro II invaded Uruguay in the first place: to gain a forward base to attack Paraguay.
@dompedroii93037 жыл бұрын
That commentary is just stupid, Paraguay doesnt have coast, how the hell Paraguay lost because the brazilian navy?
@MilikUrdap8 жыл бұрын
Let me tell you more historical facts about the matter. Argentina wasn't neutral (as it is correctly hinted in the video). Argentina openly supported the uruguayan "colorados" that were enemies of the uruguayan "blancos" (allies of Paraguay). And while Argentina denied Paraguay permission to use its territory to send troops to Uruguay, allowed Brazil to use its territory to send troops against Paraguay. It was a blatant act of belligerence against Paraguay. And the alliance against Paraguay was signed before May 1865, in "Puntas del Rosario", June 1864 and ratified in January 1865. By the way, all the armies that fought in the conflict were not-so-greatly armed (although the brazilian navy had very modern ships). Of course, what amazes the most is the figure of the paraguayan side in the war and during the allied occupation (that lasted from 1869 until 1878). To the 250.000 military casualties, you add another 300.000 civilians who died of diseases, starvation and other issues, and you got 550.000 deaths (around 50-60% of the population, according to which source you look for). Many usually wonder why the paraguayans fought so desperately and gallantly. It was because they knew they would eventually lose their property in the hands of the invaders, which eventually happened. Not only Paraguay lost territory with Brazil and Argentina, but internally, private landowners from Brazil and Argentina took control of the lands of the paraguayans.
@JabzyJoe8 жыл бұрын
+Emilio Urdapilleta It's hard to fit everything in so thanks for that.
@Funk2Funky8 жыл бұрын
+Emilio Urdapilleta Well, that's a fine argument, but it sounds too nationalistic. Argentina's case was way more complex than that, Argentina at the time was a loose confederation, just like the USA back then, their provinces were largely independent and usually fought each other in some power struggles. Dos Rios province was rival to the central power in Buenos Aires, so Solano expected them to aid in the Paraguayan side. After Paraguay invaded Brazil with little opposition, Brazil got closer with the Buenos Aires government, which thought that Paraguay was trying to get a sea-port. Solano wasn't being expansionist but Argentina and Brazil feared so. After they reached an agreement, Brazil was allowed to pass through Argentinian borders, meanwhile the Dos Rios province didn't stop the Brazilian army fearing that if Paraguay were to lose the war they would also lose power and prestige aiding them. I can't really say about the army's morale and why they fought so hard, but Paraguayan losses are to blame Solano for the most part. Paraguay was cut from its resources and their army was slaughtered again and again, it didn't stop him from conscripting almost any men he could get. Even when Paraguayan loss was eminent, Solano kept fighting, after Paraguayan defeat was a reality, Solano kept fighting. Destroying his country infrastructure and killing more and more of his men. Solano didn't lose Paraguayan land, they were disputed land, just like the Chaco region, that Paraguay also "lost". While there were Paraguayans in the whole region, so were Brazilians and Argentinian people. Borders are permeable, and changes from time to time, it was specially true back in the time of the Paraguayan war. In the region, there was little to no government, if you wanted a piece of land, you just had to chop the vegetation in it. It is obvious that would people from all around in the region, every country wanted the region, but none had the means to actually enforce any law there. After the war ended, Brazil and Argentina got the regions officially as war demands, and the person to blame there is, again, Solano, who started the war.

@DeclinedMercy4 жыл бұрын
Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay signed a secret treaty that none of them could surrender until all 3 nations agreed to it. The treaty was eventually leaked to the press by mistake and so Paraguay knew that surrender was not an option. People blast Solano as an idiot who should have given up but it wasn't really an option and a Paraguayan defeat might have resulted in Paraguay being annexed by Brazil and/or Argentina. "ARTICLE VI The allies pledge themselves solemnly not to lay down their arms unless by common accord, nor until they have overthrown the present Government of Paraguay, nor to treat with the enemy separately, nor sign any Treaty of peace, truce, armistice, or Convention whatsoever for putting an end or suspending the war, unless by a perfect agreement of all." As for the reason Paraguay attacked Brazil, Brazil had invaded Uruguay and Uruguay's port city of Montevideo was the only port on the east side of South America that was not controlled by Brazil or Argentina. Uruguay's independence was necessary to ensure the viability of Paraguay, which would have no means to trade with the outside world except at the mercy of its two greatest rivals, who would naturally leverage this power to influence Paraguayan politics. Paraguay warned Brazil not to invade Uruguay and it did anyways despite Paraguay having the more powerful military. Their options were to attack or total involuntary isolation. Argentina was invaded because it was proclaiming neutrality despite allowing Brazil's military access while denying Paraguay similar and much more necessary access. Argentina had already covertly taken Brazil's side in the war. Paraguay did not cause this war, Brazil and Argentina did.

Very nice video man, u made a great video about the war! I like the draws, but, the Brazilian Empire unifoms are wrong (we had two "white stripes" like the argentinians) Also, since 1866 almost 60%-80% of the troops were imperial soldiers, the argentinian army was almost destroyed (but still managed to give some good support with their excellent cavalry)and the Uruguayan army was almost only simbolically (So,you can divide the war in the Paraguay vs Tripple Alliance time and Paraguay vs Empire of Brazil time) Again,nice video,your channel seem to be nice!

a question, Paraguay didn't had acess to sea, and in the videos there are some naval battles, how? rivers? who needs a navy just to patrol rivers? wouldn't it be much more easier just to barricade on the your side of the river and put some artillery there?
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
A lot of nations use navies to patrol rivers , they're often called brown-water navies if you want to look them up. But in more recent times, think about the Vietnam War or America's Yangtze River Patrol in China.

Alexander, yes paraguay did have an navy and it was to patrol river Paraguay and Parana, look in your map to understand. Also they had a huge fortress in Humaitá. the war was destined to happen since the birth of Paraguay because they hated Brazilians since the time of the Bandeirantes (fortune hunters who broke the Treaty of Tordesillase expanded the Brazilian territory) who attacked them, they said that as punishment the god Tupã transformed these Bandeirantes in blacks people because of their actions, they started to hate Brazilians and it was only in 1864 when Solano Lopez had the largest army in South America, that they could empty that hate against Brazilians, the Paraguayan Aca Iboty were true suicidal psychopaths but the war is made of strategy and that Lopez did not understand, he simply sent men to the battlefields without strategy, when he played the strategist it was even worse as we see in the battle of Tuiuti where he lost 18,000 of his best men (with intellectual capital, etc) and Brazilians lost 3,000 volunteers farmers and slaves african.

For all paraguayans and lefties on this comment section: Paraguay wanted to have an atlantic coast becouse all of it's exports needed to pass by the river plate, paraguay then tried to steal half of Brazil from Brazil. At this point the Empire of Brazil was in no condition to fight a war, the only thing Paraguay had to do was to make Brazil surender before it could mobilize it's forces and Paraguay atenpted to do that by trying some crazy blietzkrieg across a flooded swampland, giving enough time to Brazil prepare an land army that dwarfed that of paraguay, to repair the rusting colection of ironclads that was the Imperial Navy at the time, to start some sort of "Imperial Air Force" by buying some hot air baloons and to grab Argentina and Uruguay into an aliance. Later in the war, Humaitá was destroyed, Assuncion captured and Lopes was runing to the north with the brazilian army on his heel, the army being slowed down by the paraguayan dictator throwing it's people to defend himself. Later he would be mortally wounded by a brazilain spearman and tried to scape by fighting a brazilian officer, who killed lopez and ended the war. There is just no way 90% of the paraguayan male population would be killed during 6 years of war, we are not talking about nazi germany, Brazil wanted to make paraguay surender and to arest Lopez. And if that nunber is correct, paraguay would have never recovered, and there would be no Paraguay today. Or what? A bunch of elders and mentally ill people breeded Paraguay back into existance? The only reason the left has to spread this absurd it's the fact that it portray's the imperails as the baddies. Go learn some real history, kiddos.
@DeclinedMercy5 жыл бұрын
90% of the men died but 'only' 50% of the women died and polygamy was legalized so the remaining men had many wives and as a result had more children, and even if that hadn't been true it just means the population would be far lower not that it wouldn't exist, and really it is not as though Paraguay is heavily populated today.
@capitaohectorbarbossa91725 жыл бұрын
@@DeclinedMercy Are you fucking stupid? historians today calculated that the poppulation on that period was 350,000 top, and the death toll is between 8% and 18% , and two thirds of the death were not from battles but from desease, starvation, frostbite and poor logistics in the first place. "Damn war. This war will be the ruin of the winner and the complete destruction of the loser." (Barão de Mauá) And so it was, because Brazil and Argentina contracted large foreign debts to maintain their war machines. This war was largely responsible for the fall of Dom Pedro II and the overthrow of the monarchy in Brazil, with the complicated economic situation, the army feeling despised by the emperor was co-opted by the positivist and republican ideas. "The Paraguayan War was a big deal for the Jewish Rotschild and his fellow Christian Barings, whose loans found a nation or overthrow a throne" (Lord Byron) Brazil borrowed GBP 10 million from Rotschild bank and GBP 4 million from Barings bank. In addition, the war lasted 5 long years and Brazil managed to destroy Paraguay. The Paraguayan population was wiped out in the war. Solano López put women, children and even the elderly to fight in the war, because the men of legal age were destroyed in the war.

In reality, winners tell the story, Argentina and Brazil were 2 power countries of the region, specially Brazil which was an empire at the time, and Paraguay’s only allie was Uruguay, when they overthrew the government, Paraguay was completely surrounded and landlocked by regional powers who disliked their existence, so declared war on Brazil, because eventually if they didn’t do anything, Brazil was going to do the same to them or even directly annex it, then Argentina did not let Paraguayans through their territory, that’s true, the part they dont count is that they did let the Brazilians go through their territory to attack Uruguay and Paraguay, so that was everything but neutral, after that happened everything that we know, either way I think is still Lopez’s fault to just not surrender when they were inevitably going to lose and let into battle until 90% of male population was exterminated, Paraguay was going to be annexed by Brazil and Argentina but President Rutherford B. Hayes intervened to keep Paraguay’s independence as a buffer state between Brazil and Argentina over the Chaco which they had border disputes

The war was going to happen REGARDLESS of Lopez's decision of helping his Uruguayan friends.

Sorry but I have to ask, Why would the U.K. intervene in Paraguay? this is a resume of South American economy during 19th century : Brazilian exports of Coffee, and nothing else, Paraguay was isolated, their economy almost didn't exist, they needed rivers that could be blocked by Brazil or Argentina, they didn't had a big population, they didn't had any industry, their country was small in territorial size, the only thing they had, was a small obsolete railway, nothing else, in the eyes of Britain they were nothing, why intervene in such a useless matter?

He became known as' 'question Christie'.
@pastrocks858 жыл бұрын
+Aleksandr Solosvkr It's well known now of the British involvement, it wasn't directly, but it was through support, and pressure. At this time Paraguay was on of the only country in Latin America that was isolated, that forced it to be self sufficient. This went unnoticed by the British due to the fact that they were focused on regaining control over the newly freed Latin America states, the ones which were already in their radar. That control would be through forcing Latin America to send its raw resources to them, and selling back to them the finished products, shoes, ponchos, hats, wood for homes... So Argentina, and Brazil instead of using their own resources to creat the very things they were importing from Europe, exported their countries future and development. While that was going on, Paraguay was growling, and prospering. It wouldn't be long before the rest of the world would take notice of this. Not wanting to let other countries follow in place, Europe heavily influenced war

I see some comments about the UK having to do something with this war, can someone explain, I want to learn more about the conflict and its wider effect such as independence for many South American countries around the time. Also, this war sounds quite one sided (3) against one, not that's good or bad but rather interesting. Lastly, does Paraguay have a stable population now and do you campaign for there lost land back?

UK had nothing to do with it. It's a debunked theory with no thesis or proofs. The independence of the South American countries happened before this war. From 1808 - 1829, the hispanic colonies got their independence from Spain, creating different countries. Brazil got its independence from Portugal in 1822. The war was not one-sided, Sólano López (Paraguay's president) wanted access to the Platina Bay and territorial expanse. To do so, he had to invade Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. He also used an excuse of Brazilian Imperialism in Uruguay (true, but not a reason to create war) in order to try and gain support from the other South American countries. None supported him, but even it being completely insane, he tried to battle two countries. One being Brazil, which was the big imperialist country of the region, with a huge army. Argentina and Uruguay didn't really play a big part in the war battles, Brazil did that mostly. The lost land is lost. Paraguayans population is better now, but still has a difference in numbers between women and men.

thanks, it's nice to know that, and as i've studied, Paraguay did had a agreement with Brazil a few years earlier, and before the invasion, Solano did send a letter to the Brazilian Emperor Peter II, asking him to remember that agreement, but was ignored, and he did invade Brazil to strengthen his position to sue for peace maybe? any way thanks for the info.

Solano Lopez was considered an enemy of Patria in Paraguay until 1930 when it exploded nationalist sentiment around the world! And later in the years 60-70-80 height of the Cold War, historians Marxist Brazilian-Argentine invented '' British imperialism '' in the war! The fact that England and Belgium provided weapons to the 2 sides! Argentina wanted to share with Brazil the Paraguay and attach a piece of Territorio, Dom Pedro II said No! In 1937 Getulio Vargas forgave Divide Paraguayan!

Yeah it was debunked if you read all the wrong books. The British was involved by influencing Brazil, and Argentina. It wasn't in direct involvement, the Brits new that wouldn't fly being as the Latin American states just gained their independence, so they had to use their means. They used its political influence to deter any other countries from establishing self sufficiently, like the state of Paraguay. The new way, as it is very common now, of controlling countries was through the world economy, not through colonialism, which Brits were the head of then, now it's the US. So in order to make sure that complete control was to be had, they had to make sure Paraguay fell in line and joined the rest of the word and participate in the world economy aka: take British loans, export them you naturally resources, and import British made things. It was pretty much the start of what would be the "free market" basically control through economic policy.

I apologise to Stroessner. He was clearly more concerned with human life by comparison.

paraguay sought to forme alliances which would the keep the federalists spirit alive which was against the centrification of powers within the cities what the unitarians and porteños wanted. thats why the blanco regime in uruguay sought help from paraguay because lopez was the bastion of the federalists. the unitarians disliked this powerhouse and when the opportunity of war presentef itself they gladly took it to get rid of their ideological counterpart in the heart of south america
