In this Unreal Engine 5 Beginner Tutorial we are going to use Parallax Occlusion Mapping to create a realistic displacement material. We are going to make a Parallax Occlusion Mapping shader.

4:45 Tip: instead of disabling the shadows on the object, you can use a shadow pass switch to move the shadowing surface behind the rendered surface. Multiply the vertex normal with a negative value, depending on the height intensity. Plug that into the shadow pin and zero in the default pin. Then plug the shadow pass switch in the world position offset

I read in multiple comments that this technique is used in many games, but in this tutorial, it only worked properly after you turned "Cast Shadows" off... wouldn't that make it somewhat useless in anything but a flat floor surface?

Thank you! Do you have any idea if it is possible to combine this material with the auto landscape (cliff) material by Unreal Sensei (keeping it's cell bomb,tiling and other features? It uses texture nodes that do not have inputs to connect the shader to.

Thank you for this thorough explanation! Made my first POM shader in UE thanks to this tutorial! Is there a way to use vertex painting while using POM..? I'm seeing a problem since there's only one Pixel Depth Offset plug.. I'm thinking of adding another POM node with a different height texture for the dirt between my tiles.. but I don't know how to blend these two when it comes to the pixel depth..(?)

I thought the shadows looked a bit odd when playing around with the light sources in the editor so if you find thats the case, dont have just a static multiply with that 0.3, plug the shadow map into that and you get far better shadows even with negative heightmaps as it better simulates the light bouncing around.

I keep getting the F90 reflection from substrate. it made my object like having a thin glass on top. is there a way to get rid of that?

Does POM work only work properly with tiled materials? I´m having issues with getting POM working with trimsheets. Any ideas?

How do I do it for master material? I don't know how to expose the Heightmap Texture (T2d) to replace it with the one used by the instance that has a different height map to the master material.

is the parallax occlusion mapping consumes a lot of performance or it's just like normal maps? great vid, love it!

It’s really optimised actually. It’s been used in many games. Dark Souls and Eldenring uses it. Even Crysis used POM. It’s a pretty good way to get detail without displacing the geometry itself. Only one thing to keep in mind, to get the highest quality, use a low resolution displacement map. Like if you use a 4K displacement map, the quality is worse for some reason. 1k or 2k is the best resolution for the displacement map if you are using POM. Also you can use 4K or 8k resolution for other maps like color, roughness, normal, etc.

I have a question which one is fps efficient ? Useing real nanite mesh or using this material system?
@pinkpocketTV
@pinkpocketTV Жыл бұрын
It depends, but generally a shader effect like this has a lot of advantages, as nanite has some limitations.

POM and Pixel Depth Offset is a Shader effect. You can’t displace the geo itself. If you want to bake the displacement in the geo, I have made a video on that, you will find it on the channel!
