Thank you for this. The exagerations you made helped me understand the why and the distortion, and the phase issue warning was also very enlightening, but I do think the final result has too much compression, especially on the snare.

The problem you avoided using the channel compression on the first example, its occuring on your second example. I can clearly hear the comb filtering on the drums. That distortion effect is adding latency to that bus

Yep, that's why it's important to be aware of the latency & pick your battles carefully. Sometimes the effect I want display is more important to me than the technical limitations of the desk. It's a game of compromises sometimes..... Thanks for the feedback!!

Couldn't agree more, major comb filtering with the tube stage. Not usable at all in this way imo. In a big p.a. that would be a tough listen.

Haha you're the second guy that said that using the channel strip comp "might not be as sexy" as using the rack lmao!! Go figure, sexy causes problems! Great video! Cheers!

Another way to solve the phase coherency issue is to use rack fx on the input channels as well. This induces the same latency on the input channel as it does on the mixbuss.

Cool examples but please provide info about how you set it up. How are the drums routed to the bus? Is it a stereo subgroup with insert? You said to another viewer that it was post fader….. but how did you route and assign things?

Really love your videos and this channel! I just got an X32 Rack and will be using it Live for my band. We don’t get to make many adjustments during the night.. we simply soundcheck, set the parameters, and usually I have time to only adjust the DCAs (drums, keys, vox, all inputs, all groups) or the Main Mix fader, quickly. Don’t have the luxury of a sound man, unfortunately. Have to be able to create and maintain a balanced, dynamic sound throughout the night. Question for you: Let’s say I set the gain structure, EQ, compression, gate on the individual channels. Then, I create a sub group for “band” then a sub group for “vox”. I want to compress the sub groups to have the “vox” sit more on top of the mix. Will it also compress the added elements on those individual channels like FX and the inserted dual tru GEQs I have on the drum channels? I don’t want a situation where the vocals or drums are getting compressed but the FX and inserts are not. Is it better to do effects and inserted GEQs on the sub groups vs the individual channels? This approach might be more applicable towards the vox sub group but was curious on how you would approach this situation? Maybe, this isn’t an issue at all because the compressor on the sub group takes into account FX and the inserts on those channels?

No, a vocal sub group will only compress the dry vocal coming from the mic. You can compress your FX Busses though. Don't forget you can EQ your FX busses too. A lot of the Reverb units are too bright for my taste so I'll shelve a lot of the high end off to darken my Reverb. Don't forget you can put all your "Band" channels on a DCA & all your Vocals on another DCA. I leave my Vocal DCA fader at zero/unity and put all my other DCA's 5 db's lower. Hope that helps!! Let me know. Thanks for the feedback

I was thinking of subgrouping drums and/or vocals out to a bus before hitting the LR bus. Have you tried doing this as opposed to parallel processing? Will that introduce any phase or latency issues with this console?

Thats what I was thinking… just use dry/wet for parrallel on an insert. Wonder if that would not sounds as fat tho

Thanks for the great content you provide! One question I have.. I have the x32 compact and I’m using all 8 of the local xlr outputs. The first 6 are IEM’s and 7 and 8 are the main LR. How do I rout mix bus 9 so it sends to the main LR? I have the channels sent to that bus that I want to compress, but I can’t get any output from that bus. I may be missing something simple here
@GodsOfAudio
@GodsOfAudio Жыл бұрын
You’ll have to assign that Bus to the Main L&R if you want to hear it thru the PA. Find the MAIN BUS section & turn on the “Main Stereo” button for Bus 9 or any other Bus you want to put thru the PA

@@GodsOfAudio the channel strip of each instrument like kick, snr top, snr bottom, etc. is not route to main LR? bcs i think if channel strip is routed to main LR it will be double.

Hi awesome video! I would like to route bus drum compression, how do you route the bus on the x32 system?
@GodsOfAudio
@GodsOfAudio Жыл бұрын
I think I answered your question in this video but I can go over it again. First, pick any free, unused Bus to be used for parallel compression purposes. If you want stereo capability, first select Bus 9 (as an example), then navigate to the "Config/Preamp" tab & press the "Link" button to link Bus 9 & 10 together. Then select the "Stereo LR" button on Bus 9 so you will be able to hear Busses 9 & 10 thru your PA. Now, while Bus 9 is still selected, press the "Sends on Faders" button & then raise the faders you want to send signal to Busses 9 & 10. For example, my drum mics are always on inputs 1-6, so I would push up faders 1-6. This will send a copy of your drum mics to Busses 9 & 10. From there, enable the Compressor for Bus 9 & start lowering the Threshold control until you're happy with the amount of compression. At this point, you can start pushing the fader up on Bus 9 to blend the heavily compressed drums with your "Dry" drum mics. I hope that explanation is helpful. Thanks for your question.

He actually has the DrumComp Bus set as pre-fader as you can see by the LED light on mixbus 11-12. But this won't matter much if your faders are around unity. I can give you more control if set to pre-fader. Also you must remember to assign the bus to LR
