I'm a year late on this, but if you'd still like to know: These were some of the first live performances after Brand New Eyes came out. Most of that album followed a theme of how the band almost broke up in the process of making it. (For example, Ignorance was written by Hayley about the guys.) A big part of their break up at the time was Hayley and Josh's religious dispute. Although they are both very vocal about their Christianity, during the writing process of "Careful" Hayley wrote the line "The truth never set me free so I'll do it myself." Josh didn't want that to be a part of the song because it goes against the bible saying "the truth shall always set you free. This particular intro is expressing their love for God. "I asked for love I asked for patience I asked you for shelter and I begged you for the rain." This was one of the few songs played during the tour that they all fully agreed on.

+Sydney Spangler if you look up the fall tour intro which is also beautiful, you'll notice it is somewhat connected to the theme in "Brick by boring brick." It was an awesome way to add to the experience of seeing them live because you'll never hear these kinds of things on an album. Also check out their cover of Michael buckley's "hallelujah" that they did as an intro to their song hallelujah during the 2008 final riot tour. There's also numerous ways that they've outro'd "here we go again" and there's one outro to "let the flames begin" that they started performing in late 2007, but recently connected it to the song "Part II" on the self titled record of 2013.
