About the ending, the director said that even if the son worked day and night for the next 200 years, he would not be able to earn enough money to buy that house. Not even considering his criminal charges and how that would affect his chances of being hired. The ending is about class, and how, no matter how hard he dreams, he will not ascend it.
@dlweiss Жыл бұрын
In fact , the final piano song on the soundtrack was originally titled "564 years" because that's approximately how long it would take the son to earn enough to afford that house.
@deadsetondreams1988 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, it is estimated that it would take approximately 564 years for Ki-woo to earn enough money to purchase the house. I wonder how many people it would take to chip in to help him shorten that time to a more manageable number of years. At least if the mom helped, they could half it, hopefully.

Also, let's no forget that scene at the gym (is not in this reaction but we know it 💅 ) the one when the dad says [to his son]: "You know what kind of plan never fails? No plan. No plan at all. You know why? Because life cannot be planned. Look around you. Did you think these people made a plan to sleep in the sports hall with you? But here we are now, sleeping together on the floor. So, there's no need for a plan. You can't go wrong with no plans. We don't need to make a plan for anything. It doesn't matter what will happen next. Even if the country gets destroyed or sold out, nobody cares. Got it?" I think this scene is key to know that the "plan" at the end it's just that...just ideas, words :B

I'm glad you caught the imagery of them going down to their real life. also, the rich family is only seen walking up and the poor family is only seen walking down, showing how hard it is to move up and how the rich stay up. The rock that Min gave him, it's not a real rock, it's hollow which is why it didn't kill Kiwoo. Min said it symbolized financial prosperity or something. The fact that it is hollow, reflects how that dream of being rich is in the end a hollow dream.Which again comes back in the end scene, the song that plays while after Kiwoo reads his letter to his dad is called a glass os soju, and alternative title is 564, which is the number of years it would take for someone of Kiwoo's financial position to be able to buy that house

The way this movie executes its genre switch so suddenly yet it still feels somehow seamless is one the things that impresses me most about it, among all of the other things it does perfectly. The maid ringing the bell is at the exact halfway point of the movie, and it signals a shift from what is seemingly a family heist movie to a gripping thriller where there are lives on the line. I could literally talk for hours on how well this movie is done, how it tackles the problems of capitalism and how such a bleak ending leaves you feeling hollow, but somehow still satisfied with the movie.

I think them having the same smell is also a reminder that no matter how well you dress, you speak, or important is the job you do, real rich people will always be able to sniff you out. Class is the real divider. The poor people in the movie are fighting and putting their lives on the line for scraps while the rich wander around oblivious. I find it so interesting how when the family was having the sit down before everything went to crap the brother talked about how the sister was the one who fit in the most inside the home because of how she carried her self in the house but she is the one who ends up dying. It kind of shows how even if you have the most qualities to become something of yourself their are still certain things that can prevent you from making it. Even though the sister fit in the most and had the biggest chance of getting out of poverty she was the only one killed.

The point in the movie where the house flooded and showed the money ‘rock’ floating signified the rock was a fake= they won’t get out of poverty even their plan won’t help them. The return of the rock when it’s put down in the water shows that everything that happened after (him buying the house and reuniting with his dad) was a dream/ not reality. It’s what he would’ve wanted but he’ll never get it. And the song in the end solidified this idea as it basically talks about how even if the son saved for 564 years he’d never have enough money to buy the house.

Nominated for 6 Academy Awards, winner of 4, original screenplay, director, best picture and international feature. Easily THE best of that year and one of the very best in YEARS! First time that a film wins big with a non-white cast! Bong Joon Ho is a masterful director! Also, some fun facts about the film: the exterior of the rich family's house was computer generated and the flooding of the lower levels of the city were filmed in a giant tank, and the city was digitally put in to blend into those few blocks built in that huge water tank. Oh! Did you notice all the visual divides between the rich family and the poor one. I LOVE this film!!! It's entertaining, efficient, sharp, deliciously dark, wildly surprising, and wholly affecting satirical thriller/drama about the parasitic nature of those who feed off the rich and the rich that feed on the poor. CHEF'S KISS!!!! From the acting, production, cinematography, film editing, writing, and directing, it's an incredible feat of cinematic execution.

Love that you caught on the imagery of them descending hills and stairs having parallels with their situation! Bong Joon-Ho, the director, stated that one of his influences for the movie and the set was British “upstairs-downstairs” shows and movies that showed the conditions of the extremely wealthy as well as the lives of the service people that worked for them (like Downtown Abbey)
@ot7biasedmashups11 ай бұрын
I think one of the craziest things you kind of miss amidst the chaos of this movie isn't just how the family successfully infiltrates the rich people house. It's the fact that all of them were actually skilled enough to do their jobs (we see the least of the son, but since the grades of the girl aren't dropping that probably means that he's doing a good job) and weren't discovered. Yet they still live in poverty simply because of class. The children can't get a good education because they need to work and keep the family somehow alive. The parents don't have the chance to get education anymore either. There's obviously worse countries than South Korea but going to college is still something you'd only be able to do in a well off family. In Germany f. E. going to college is free and our support system makes it really difficult to end up in a situation where you can't get education, although it's still not impossible. What I'm saying is, there's more than enough poor people that would be perfectly fit for wealthy jobs, yet they can't ever get them because of the class divide. It's impossible to cross, no matter how hard you try.
@the_nikster1 Жыл бұрын

Little note on the Ram-Don. For people who aren't Korean this isn't gonna get noticed but it's basically Ramen with one of the most expensive kinds of meat. It's a huge insult to the poor family because they're just casually eating that meat with instant noodles.
@xejelah11 ай бұрын
Why is what they're eating an insult to the poor family?
@ot7biasedmashups11 ай бұрын
@@xejelah imagine wearing pure gold paired with fast fashion you ordered from shein. It’s an insult because they can afford the most expensive kind of meat as if it’s nothing and then pair it with food made for people who can’t afford more. No normal person would ever get the idea to pair udon with instant noodles. It’s something you might eat only once a year with your family or smth, not a casual late night snack
@heyheykim80524 ай бұрын
Korean beef is so expensive. The instant noodle is so cheap. So common people can't think to eat the expensive meat with cheap noodles because we can't feel the flavor of expensive meat for the noodle. The film is a social horror film (found myself screaming at the screen as the family were returning, more so than the murders), and like the reality of the late stage capitalist structure we live in, the kid will never be able to climb the ranks and see his father again. It has a lot of social commentary as expected and addresses the class discussion in such an interesting way, with the thriller aspect leaving you very anxious, never expecting what is to come. Korea has a LOT of amazing movies. I'll recommend three that were pretty interesting. Oldboy (at this point a classic), the Handmaiden and Decision to Leave. They are very different and yet all very very interesting, and they are all from the same director.

This is random, but a movie I recommend is called “20th century girl” it’s a Korean movie, and made me cry for HOURSSSS! It’s a cute romcom set in the early 2000’s ❤
