As a Samoan who grew up in America, it did surprise me to find out in Samoa that kids call their parents by their first names. The reason being, that the word for mom or dad (Tinā or Tamā) in Samoan is usually used for the pastor/reverend/preacher of the village and his wife.

@@raichelletempest Yes. I have cousins that still call their parents by their 1st name to this day. Christianity is a huge part of Samoa as before that, we were uncivilized cannibalistic warriors. The pastor of the village supercedes the highest chief (which is a big deal). The pastor is the "spiritual father" (Tamā fa'aleagaga) & all those in the village, they address him as Tamā. They do it as a sign of respect.
