Dr. Ken Wilgus encourages parents to deliberately work their way out of the parenting role by the time their child is 18, and instructs them to see their teenagers as young adults, not large children. He offers tips on how to progressively give your teen more responsibility, along with examples of how to have difficult conversations on a range of topics, from music choices to dating.

My son turned 18 this year and he thinks because he’s an adult that he can do anything. With that said, he is not into dating and so is my daughter. I told them what my father told me “ that having a bf/gf is a responsibility. And if you want a bf/gf and you want to go to the movies or whatever, then get a job. Don’t come to me asking for money. I’m not the one dating your bf/gf.”

Long car rides with deep discussions of being charitable, treating others the way we expect to be treated ,and prayer works.

I love how practical this is! When my sons became teens I truly thought they had LOST THEIR MINDS. I wish I'd heard this back then. Especially with boys, they want that autonomy!

“To teach not to need me”, to be done. Sounds great but emotional to let go.

Made an agreement with my children before we got to teenage years that having a special friend would be best at junior in high school. Explained old enough to earn earn, close enough to graduation to finish if an unexpected event happens.

Mine are 24 and 20. The 24 year old is almost ready. The 20 year old thinks he knows it all. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Do you have advise on bed time for 15 year old girls. Do you just let them go when they want?

What if your kid is a total reprobate and does not want to act like an adult, and is poisoning the other kids in the house?

I'm surprised that you accept the American dating culture this much as Christians. I grew up in a youth church where we hung out in groups but had no dating culture. We were friends and there was no flirting or dating. People were typically at least in their twenties before they started dating, that is, almost ready to marry. And so more mature decisions could be made. I would not let my kids go off alone to date at 16, since it would serve no purpose.

Thank you for this comment. I always wondered why Americans allow their teens to date so early, isn't it fornication or is it a platonic relationship?
