When you play with your small child and are truly present and happy to play with them for 10 or 15 minutes minimum. They will feel that, and will register that they are of value. You will also be modeling play for them, if they are unsure. (Follow their ideas if they have them, and leave space for them to verbalise, rather than flooding the play with your voice). It's an opportunity to scaffold language. For example, your 3 year old rolls a toy car at you saying, 'car, car'. You could role it back saying, 'yes, little green car, broom, broom'. Or 'slow car' or 'fast car' while pushing the car, fast or slow. You are literally expanding their discriptive language and helping them build their understanding, while spending time with them, playing with them, and avoiding pointing at things and making your child repeat words back at you, which teaches them very little about how to communicate and interact with others. By playing with them, you are helping them to build their playing/learning skills, which they can then explore further with other children or by themselves.
