Yes I feel for your parents who miss their grandchildren. Your mother is especially traumatized by it all. Think your plans need to include them somehow. Seeing the grandkids once a year won’t work and you will be burdened with guilt when they’re gone.

I really love this episode. It brought back a lot of memories. My parents were adventurers. In 1963-64 our family of 5 drove across the US from Calif to New York in a VW bus camper. We boarded a ship and sailed to England. For the next 14 months we traveled throughout the UK and Europe living in the bus. One of my favorite places was Venice. I was 14 and bought a pair of Italian leather shoes and a mohair sweater there. We also visited the Isle of Murano and saw the glass blowers. My parents purchased a beautiful glass decanter set for my grandparents, which I now have. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. What you are doing with your family will stay in your heart and memory forever. I am 72 now and that was the best experience of my life. I'm so glad your parents were able to visit you and see for themself what a great life and adventure you are having.

I cried when your mum said about the girls. I totally understand how she feels. I lived in another country that I loved but moved back to be closer to my grandchildren and a unwell child. So a little different. But what your girls get to experience is just wonderful and we get just 1 chance at this life and we should all live how we want. No regrets. I think I need to book a flight back to to see Venice again. I had forgotten how beautiful it was. Definitely in the 'off' season for something different.

My Swedish family is originally from Kalmar, which is also known for it's glassblowing. I was fortunate to be able to see Kalmar glassblowers while visiting in Seattle a few years back. It is such an amazing art form. The main reason I would want to visit Italy would be to visit Brunelleschi's dome in Florence. That construction is such an amazing feat.

My first impression of Italy before I ever got there. I remember waiting at the train station in Germany, and the train going to Italy pulled up. I looked, and immediately thought it was a circus train. It was jam packed with crazy people hanging out the windows. I never saw anything like it. Then I got to Italy, and I like to say that I ate my way thru Italy. The food is just amazing. They have cozy little hole in the wall places to sit down and eat, everywhere. Ice cream, 'glace' was on every corner and available in every flavor. Oh, and Italy is so beautiful. Like breathtaking gorgeous. It is rough and edgy, but is quiet and old. I never made it to Venice. I am so happy to see this amazing channel and I look forward to every episode. Incredible parents of two beautiful girls, so happy for you.

I feel such empathy with your parents and the emotional loss of having you move so far. They will, I am sure, miss many moments of your lives which can never be recovered. But, I suppose this is the time honored experience of modern life. I believe you are cognizant of these things and will do what you can to overcome any obstacles which would preclude your family from remaining close. You have shown that you are a special, loving family and I have no doubt you will be successful in your new journey…who knows maybe a “mother and father-in-law” apartment with a resident goat attached could be in your future plans…nahhhh…😂watching and cheering you on from PA, USA.

SUGGESTIONS: Perhaps, you’ve considered these options, I’ve seen a few Italian stone cottages, including one in your area, outfitted with a skylight. They allow a lot of light in and are a beautiful option. Also, it appears the window opening in the room with the fireplace is large, but the window doesn’t take full advantage. Also, if you install large full length windows in the doors, that will also allow a great deal of light in the rooms. I don’t understand why the local authorities are being so difficult. You might take a look at Martijn’s reno. He has tiny windows and I don’t think there are any in the lower level. He has installed a skylight in the one cottage that he’s tackling. Your place already has more windows and larger ones than his. I hope this is helpful. My only other suggestion is to hire an experienced architect who knows how to manage such a challenge with your local government.
@moparman1962

Yes, I was thinking the same thing about installing two or three very low profile or flat skylights in the roof IF that would satisfy the Italian authorities as far as the improved lighting part of their issue is concerned.

My small family did the same thing thirty something years ago moving from Europe to 🇨🇦 leaving parents, friends, basically everything behind. It is a very hard choice, but it is essential for the new generation to move forward and live their life on their own turns no matter what. I respect your parents to no limit to be able to accept your decision with love and understanding and I appreciate your intentions to accomodate them into your life as much as you can. I understand your Dad's comment about your satellite family giving him some peace of mind. My Daughter lives in France with her fiance and his family looks after her as their own which gives me and her father so much peace of mind with her being so far away from us. We have been her protectors her whole life so it's hard not to be able to other than a FaceTime conversation. Knowing she can get a meaningful hug from someone who truly cares for her in hard times, when we can't, means the world to us as parents. Especially when we loose a family member. That one is hard to navigate through distance! But we make it work.

Im a biologist/entomologist and I now can grow calla lilies in Colorado. Granted it’s SW Colorado on the edge of the Great Basin desert, but today 2/23/24 it is almost 60 degrees. It’s been unseasonably warm since mid January and I believe this is the new normal. We have red wing blackbirds appearing now. They usually show up in Mid April. It is very unsettling to have our winter snow pack disappearing his early.

The happy move to Italy is not easy, but it is a decision that will benefit everyone. Your gurls are incredible independence and intelligent! I had the opportunity to visit Cilento, Italy, five years ago. It is a beautiful town where you can breathe peace and tranquility. I'm back again this October. I wish you good health and strength to finish this beautiful project. Greetings to all and to Stella! Cia!
