As a 72YO retired nurse of 46 yrs, I can not begin to praise you enought for doing what you are doing, You are putting family first and doing what makes you happy. USA is now so stressed that we have LOST our way. Work and money - how much is enough? As someone who emigrated to Europe from the US nearly 40 years ago, I feel qualified to give a bit of advice on the issue of homesickness: Attitude and perspective. You've chosen Italy and your property; that is HOME. Stop thinking of the US culture or conveniences as things to be missed or longed for, or as "home". Obviously, keep in touch with family and close friends; but make friends where you are, and when you think of going home, think of your stone barn, not the States. The sooner you can make that mental step, the easier it will be. Make your life where you are; dig into the culture, history, neighbourhood and community and integrate as soon as you can... Also, if you are missing certain comfort foods or items from shopping in the States, try and find alternatives in Italy as soon as you can - that will help with the feeling of "being home"...

We can't take it with us when we die. I would rather just be able to sit and talk to my family and long-time friends and extended family. than go buy them something that is going to sit on the shelf. I am an Italian immigrant whose family settled in Canada. You are raising the next generation so it is vital that you lead by example. I envy you, and I think your logic is sound. I can say, you are leaving a toxic country, which is only getting worse, because to fix it would involve too much change, and as you know, people find it difficult to change. The US is a slippery slope.

Greetings from Scotland! I can sympathise with you guys because my wife and I went through a very similar process. We married at 18yo and went on honeymoon to the Northern Scottish Highlands - and we stayed! Jobs were abundant and houses also! The first year was really hard and we both wanted to give in and go back home. At the end of last April we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary, in Scotland - where we still live, very happily! We are both SO glad we stayed, brought up a family and our children have done the same. Hang on in there guys!

Trouble is at home and at least acknowledging that's leaving the problem to continue while we go away. Too much colonisation is based on dissociation from problems we actually carry with us to other places... Maybe this is a return to europe for some people's heritage, however admitting what we left unwilling or unable to address behind within or ahead of us (for decendants) is literally the difference between re, de or just colonising again and again. 8-9 months is hard to no return home..especially where children are involved... However Most important is healing the wounds of those who have been colonised and how we are all left when healing is not provided and allowed for... We carry on with culture which is not natural to the nature of the person, all of life or places of nature.

My boyfriend and I have been working with Americans and Canadians for several years. Last summer we went to LA to edit a movie and a documentary, and we lived for quite a long time in a huge mansion in Beverly Hills that had been "lent" to us by an old friend of our producer. We are both Italian, and we are about to finish renovating an old house we bought in Florence; we did most of the heavy lifting (including hurting our backs while digging dirt and boulders from underneath the whole house to insulate the floor from humidity, emptying a basement full of debris, and well... old poop, exactly like you did), then we hired some companies to do the things we weren't allowed to do ourselves. You know what? I totally get it. Our circumstances kind of "mirror" yours, since we were born in the country you've chosen to live in. Stefano and I LOVE travelling (we both used to work for the international cooperation, years ago), and we've had our share of what it means to live the best, most luxurious life in the US, but like many Americans we know, who chose to settle in Europe, we have no desire to "live the American dream": we'd miss our small, old house (now super-efficient and green) in our beautiful city, we'd miss our relaxed lifestyle, our 15-minute neighborhood, our vegetable garden, not to mention the family house built by my grandfather, sitting in an enchanting valley on the Alps and surrounded by a garden and fruit trees. I've just discovered your channel and I've already binge-watched most of your videos. Truth be said, I'd love to meet you in person and have a long, nice chat, 'cause I think that we have a lot in common and a similar mindset, even though we were born on opposite sides of the world. I wish you the best! Serena

I agree with you. I worked minimum 80 hours a week for 40 years in Los Angeles. My work was my life, my family, my hobby, everything. I didnt even have time to take my dog for a walk. I had to hire dog walkers. I also do not want to live in the environment that America has become. It is angry, negative, hateful and fearful. Children being killed in their schools is not what I want to say defines my country. I felt a deep dark hole in my sole in the US. I began looking for a different life. I found it in Central Italy in the Majella mountains. I bought a small home, live in a tiny village, I can get anywhere by train or bus. I really love the live and work dynamic in Italy. The people here are more in tune with the big picture and what is good for all rather than me me me. Your children seem well adjusted and thriving. They will be able to open their hearts to their dreams. I wish you the best in Italy.

It’s so admirable and courageous that you are expanding your mindset, and that of your girls, to the wider world by moving, traveling and living your best life. My husband and I also just left the USA and moved to Belgium. Within days we relaxed into the wonderful aspects of life in Europe, free from the worry of violence and intolerance. We are not going back. The US is great in many ways but there is a certain sickness there now. Viva Europe, viva Italy!

I think that regardless of your reasons for leaving your home country, the view that you get to look out onto every day makes the adventure seem so worth it. I've just turned 70 and like most of my generation spent nearly every waking hour working to provide for and prepare the next generation. It wasn't all just drudgery, every life has it's great moments, and we've had our fair share. But now retired, I wake up in the morning and see nothing more than the house next door, and the house next door to that, etc, etc. My dream was less adventurous, I just wanted to have a cottage by the sea, (sigh) I doubt it's going to happen. But boy I could get used to waking up to that view every morning, Italy looks so beautiful, wow. Enjoy every moment, life flies by and not all our dreams will get to be realized. It looks like a lot of hard work, but it also looks amazingly worth it. 👋🇿🇦

The life and home you are building with your daughters is the true gift. That is what I see. You aren’t just building a beautiful home. You are building a STRONG , SOLID family. There is nothing more primal than the family homestead. I see a family truly bonded with love and sacrifice for each other. There is no better foundation. I totally recognize the home sickness you are feeling. It’s real pain. I know you’ll get through. Together. As a family. I pray the universe blesses your family. Just started watching your videos of your adventures renovating the stone house. Wife and I had similar ideas several years ago, but it did not work out for us, unfortunately. I worked for nearly 40 years as an architect in Canada, spending many hours, days, weeks, months, and years working on other peoples projects, and always dreamt about doing my own house. Got tired of working, quit my job, got married, and we travelled a lot. Took my wife to Croatia, my birth place to show her the place. She loved it. Came back to Canada, then she suggested we move there, permanently. I told her this is not like moving a hundred miles down the highway in Canada or US. I told her she was going to miss Canada, her friends, her children (she was born in Canada, and had kids from a previous marriage). She said she will be OK. So, we sold the house just outside of Toronto, Ontario, hired a mover, stuffed everything into a container, including a car, and moved to Croatia. Stayed at my cousins place that I fixed up a couple of years before...was a really nice second floor in his house. Everything started to go well, we even managed to buy a large piece of land on which we planned to build our house. Found a local architect to help me with the local codes, and things. One day, wife gets a message from her disabled daughter saying that she had to move to a group home, because her stepmother, and father (who had her custody) were being mean to her. Tore my wife to pieces! She would be crying as we'd be driving around in Croatia. Had to change our plans. Stopped the house plans, packed everything in a container again, and shipped it to Montreal. So, that's were we are now, living in an apartment close to her daughter who comes to visit us every second weekend.. So much for dreams. I hope you guys are able to carry out your dreams. Best of luck living in Europe. It is very much different than USA or Canada. I love travelling in USA...hitting the Interstate 80 though Nebraska, Wyoming, I40 though New Mexico or Arizona or I10 through West Texas...USA is a lot more than NYC or LA...great people out mid-west or west...real America in my opinion. Europe is great too...go and see Vienna, I would say it's the most beautiful city in the World with culture overflowing everywhere. Check out the highway hugging the Adriatic coast in Croatia. Pacific Coast Highway in California doesn't even come close to the beauty of that Croatian highway. Rovinj is a gorgeous town in Istria, Croatia - go and see it, it's probably only 2 and a half hours away from where you are now. Italian and English are spoken widely in Croatia. So is German. Go and see the place. Long comment, I know...

When we were 28, back some 40 years ago, we were offered jobs in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. We jumped at the opportunity and are so thankful for it. Like you, we were immersed in a culture totally different from our USA upbringing. Unlike you, at that time, there were no cell phones, internet or social media. Even tv was very limited and all in Spanish. We would walk across town every Sunday & pick up the Miami Herald that was flown in once a week. For us it was like going back another 40 years in time to a simpler life style. There were no shopping malls, and only one basic grocery store for dry goods. You went to the farmers market for veggies, the poultry market for chicken & eggs & the butcher buy some meat. Getting together with friends was all there was to do for entertainment. But that was all we needed. We immersed ourselves in the Bolivian culture and we are all the richer for it. Good for you for putting family over career & money. I love watching you work together and involving your girls in the process. The life skills they are learning are invaluable. I love my country but hate what the media has done to us. When we turn off the tv or get off our laptop and just go out and meet our neighbors or engage with people in the community, we find kindness everywhere. Maybe the internet going down for awhile would be a good thing. 😊 We wouldn’t get to watch your channel. But maybe we would meet our “tribe” all around us and learn how to love one another again. I love watching you make coffee in your mocha pot and take in the beauty around you before you start hauling boulders again.😅 You really do work hard! Thank you for sharing your life story with us.

For someone that traveled in Europe as a young adult up to my mid 20’s, I honestly wished I had stayed there. The quality of life is so much better in Europe. Medical costs are outrageous here in the US and the divide between the rich and poor is disgusting. There are so many bad things...like this debt crisis we are in now where one party doesn’t care about putting the rest of us in financial ruin, let alone what it does to the rest of the world. No other country gets away with this madness. Kids are in schools and every aspect of life here worrying about crazy people with guns. All I can say is that you are much safer there and you are living a dream life there! You definitely made the right decision! I would come back to Europe in a heartbeat!

I retired and moved 1000 miles from Texas to Tennessee. Although it’s not another country, the distance from our children & grandchildren makes it seem so. Also leaving the “work life” to a slower pace has been an adjustment. We have no regrets, but living the rural life is hard work as you well know. However, experiencing the natural beauty everyday and discovering all of the amazing “secrets” of our acreage has been an adventure. You guys are young & full of energy while I am now pushing 70, so my body talks to me with each project I do. I have built a 500 sq ft cabin, built a 2000 sq ft post & beam forever home almost entirely on my own. I have also cleared & moved tons of rock over 3 years and the results have been so rewarding! Stick to your dreams and know that since you are young that you can take your time and readjust your goals along the way. The peace of mind you gain will be the ultimate reward. Continue to take risks as life is so short. Your videos are a joy to watch and your work ethic is astonishing. God bless you & your beautiful family as you continue your journey.

I too have left. Lived in California for almost 30 years. One day I decided to leave everything single thing I knew and had. Once I learned my parents (that are at that age) needed my help, I dropped everything I had going for myself, a good job, a wonderful relationship, friends absolutely everything!! As I've commented to you both in the recent past. When I left the US 5 years ago things started to seem a bit odd. I've lived basically all my life there and know how California and Californians are. I felt like good ol' relaxed and cool California has turned into the high adrenaline rat race, and saw how many began to actually struggle. And politically it IS very divided. And what's worse is I watched from abroad (where I now live now) how the banks "like vultures" took advantage of normal folks like you and I making them homeless, losing jobs, and forced to the streets!! The banks got richer, the government did nothing, and all hell is breaking loose now... So forgive me if I get angry when I hear that billions are being given to other countries, when in fact California, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, and other states are suffering and being forced to live in the streets!! Because of this situation. I do hope you and the girls will be happy, and if you love traveling, where you now live is pretty much perfect! I too have missed the US , especially at Christmas time, and basically everything about it really, the people, the ways, etc... I still hold America close to my ❤️ and always will...

I've moved to the US from Belgium 25 years ago. My brother and sister couldn't understand it... I also LOVED traveling and been all over the developed world. For the most part I've been really happy. I do have to say in the last 5 years it has gotten so lonely and difficult to associate with people. Religion, politics, guns and LGBT issues are being exploited by politicians and they typically target the less sophisticated, which became blatantly obvious Jan 6th. So having seen both sides; I have to say I still prefer the US because of the better financial opportunities (taxes). I retired at 54 and now just day trade equities and bonds. But there's always the worry about the unscrupulous medical system, the constant worry about yet another mentally deranged individual going postal and social media literally ruining young undeveloped brains.

Well about a year later (Thinking to spend 2 months in Germany, and stayed 2 years) I was moved about it, and know, I am to be here. There was nothing left for me to do in America, and did not want to keep going as things were. I did go back once in the 90's and tie up loose ends, and now I am happy and won't be going back. I have 2 children here and Greek citizenship, so I thank GOD for that. The ancients and the sea, the people and the food, everything is good. And other things as doing with Music that I wasn't allowed to do in the states. A school friend of mine is living in Spain, loves it. I think where you are, you will have plenty to do when the house is done. as it is a little strange when something is done and you look around and say, "Now What"? 😊

Supporting your sense of adventure, your love of family values and the fact that you are sharing so much! I wish I could say we had Social Media and You Tube when I was your age and our kids were all younger - I may have been brave enough to have done what you're doing! We got caught up in the American "Never Enough" way of life and will begin our voyage within a few years with only our youngest in tow - but you inspire me! We found your channel in pouring over Italian properties and trying to decide which region we would like to settle in. For now, just know that I watch (and sometimes my two youngest kids still at home and my husband) your channel to keep my inspiration. Thanks!

As a Brit I take it very much for granted that we can travel across Europe at an affordable rate. When meeting Americans it always strikes me how very hard they work and it appears to take over their lives and they find it hard to switch off. I hope that more US citizens start to re-evaluate the balance.

As American, I can say you are looked down on here if your motivation is not money and possessions. It’s sad and wrong but it’s true.

Hello there, I’ve just started to catch up with your back catalogue. Wow! My respect is with you both undertaking that project and in a different country. I appreciate what you say about the divisive culture and it is getting that way here 🇬🇧as well. I think the work life balance is fundamental especially with a family. I used to do long weeks and end up sleeping at the weekend, what a way to spend my life. I think you have the right approach but look after your health..cannot imagine how you hurt your back! Love Heather wearing her hat in the cold bath .
