It's not a bad thing but to OP's parents, it was seen as a threat to their role as parents. They were the breadwinners of the family and her setting out on her own and accomplishing her dreams was kinda like rubbing it in their faces. It's a craft that some people can appreciate, but there are also those who would rather go for cheap than handcrafted. ​Most projects barely make the money used to buy the item and time spent on the project. I mean, I just finished making a 70in x 70in granny square blanket and spent probably around $50 just on the yarn and nearly 60 hours on it. Not very many people are going to be willing to pay $100 for that. But I usually don't make such big projects but more little ones like dolls and other amigurumis (stuffed animals/figures like plushies).
