IF they're based in the United States, yes. However, that's not the case in all countries. South Korea, for example, does not have that same requirement. You can sue for defamation EVEN when it's the truth and EVEN when others have publicly discussed that truth already.

This is gonna be controversial and I don't care. I don't feel bad for the Op at all, because people who spend money outside of their means deserve any backlash that happens regardless. someone said they're gonna help you. You should still budget within your pay grade regardless. Because now you still look stupid because other people had to still help you. And you had to put your business out on social media for other people to feel bad and help you. I mean, it sucks that the parents are the way that they are. Defamation is something that isn't easy to prove and you have to make it past ANTI-SLAP in the states in most places. I wouldn't worry about it and cross that road when it comes. When people throw that around they are trying to bully you, they have no idea who incredibly hard it is to prove and how costly it is. If you're in another country I don't know. The parents would also be dumb to do it in the states as in some places they could be on the hook for legal fees as well.
