Paris home-within-home: metal core adds space to modern loft

To preserve the open, industrial feel of a 1920s industrial loft in Paris' 11th arrondissement, architect Alex Delaunay inserted a pre-fab island into the center. The golden aluminum-clad home-within-a-home adds bedrooms and a bathroom without the need for adding walls to the stripped-down, raw concrete space.
Twelve of the 40 tall aluminum panels are operable shutters or doors mounted on metal frames and rails allowing for natural light to enter the bedroom and bathroom filtered through slats in the polycarbonate panels.

A large module in a hard to construct space. :) Without major construction of inserting metal beams and without separating functions of spaces with the floor to the ceiling drywalls. It should cost a fraction of the typical “loft conversion.” It seems European cities are more tune to concept of modularizing space functions without construction to save serious conversion construction money and spend more in aesthetic (finishes and unique materials). I am not fan of this particular aesthetic (neither finishes or materials), but I am fan of the fundamental idea that the whoever did this project knows exactly what to spend money on. :) Thank you very much for sharing.

My thoughts exactly. I do, however, enjoy the effect of the slots milled into the paneling along with the textured clear panels and how that creates a kind of light/image echo when someone walks by. The gold color of the paneling and the storage system that they used in the kitchen area are definitely not to my tastes. For the island, I would have gone with a wood finish instead of the aluminum panels, perhaps bamboo paneling or something like what is depicted here (#1, #2, #4 or #5). The wood would look fantastic with that light pattern milled into it. www.damarals.com/18688/floor/unique-types-of-wood-floor-finishes-25-best-ideas-about-wood-floor-finishes-on-pinterest-plank-of/ With muted blue or green accents (maybe this "sassy green" but a bit less bold): i.pinimg.com/736x/bb/97/9f/bb979fc1a81673747c9bc0fb79a0561d--hallway-paint-colors-brown-paint-colors.jpg

Alpha Machina I have worked for engineering (not construction) company so I can see the benefits of aluminum application (light weight, easier to cut and bend and its strength) , but as you mentioned it’s not everyone’s cup of tea for sure. If they use regular wooden panels instead of aluminum, I am pretty sure that 1) they will start to sag sooner because of the sheer size of the panels (weight) and weight down the module structure. Also 2) wood will kill the creator’s intension to “corporate different materials.” Since this is “industrial structure” (loft) to begin with, I can see the intension of keeping integrity (this isn’t a typical residential setting) of the construction.

I think the idea comes from deciding what the person living here wants, they decided to sacrifice a fairly small amount of space with no privacy, no bedroom and no bathroom for much more. 3 hallways, a bathroom, a bedroom and a loft and with a lot of storage while keeping natural light throughout the apartment. I think you're taking private space for granted if you don't like this design.

The more homes I design, the more I realize that hallways are the biggest waste of space. The fewer the hallways, the more useful and livable the space. This turns the space into living in a box surrounded by a giant hallway.

@anastassiaroucine2507 2 жыл бұрын
In this case, the hallways are used as storage spaces. I actually liked it !! But 2 things : 1) I know they wanted to keep the industrial aesthetic but the pillars and the celling are a big no-no for me, they need to be colored or something 2)I would have made the kitchen in the same golden-leaves colors
@JIROHirokawa
@JIROHirokawa 6 жыл бұрын
The reason why they made it this way is they don't want to touch the space that much. Meaning they want to use it as a living space now but it may change someday. I think this is brilliant honestly. A home within a home is a good concept. Specially for people who have studio-type properties, wants to somehow live in it but doesnt want to entirely change anything.

I like it. The sense of separation is needed (for me anyways) when having guests or others living with you. This also gives a feeling of the place being larger than it is when you can't see through from wall to wall (while you are going up the stairs or in the loft or bedroom). With all of the metal doors open it does give an open feel to the "ufo" lol. Like you said to each their own.
@OscarGGL
@OscarGGL 6 жыл бұрын
Trev L I disagree, I think this is more practical. Instead of building walls they managed space very efficiently in term of storage, shower, beds etc. There still is an open area with kitchen, dinning place etc. The design and the colors of the rounded box may not please everyone but the next owner can put it away as easily as it was installed. Needs, space, tastes, projection... A lot of factors go into building and filling our little homes. I personaly find this idea very interesting, I would have opted for more wood instead of so much metal :p

The circulation corridor around the metal capsule is a brilliant space, it makes the apartment seem larger by creating an infinite trail . Love the shower! Showering “semi-public” and the sense of how we used to do in nature ‘millennium’ years ago must be refreshing. A lot of thoughts and rationals have gone into this home. Thumbs up! 😁👍

Epic failure of that cage in the middle of the apartment. I think that while the living, dining and kitchen are nicely done, I don't like the metal covering or the loft on how low the concrete ceiling is to the "guest bedroom" The space looks like it's not large enough to have 2 sleeping areas. I think that if you're going to have a sleeping area, I would allocate the space for one space not two. The bathroom doesn't have a toilet from what I saw. I do like the concept of the glass, but I think the execution was poor. Other than the major problem with that ugly box, I like the apartment.

I like how they left the natural surface of the concrete. I like that they balanced the cool tone rough surface with warm tone smooth surface. And the round corners balance out all the angles. Materials: Stone, metal, .... they need more wood, although the leafy cutouts might count for that. I like the hallways, my kids would have loved that; they would go running 'round and round it. I like houses that have a circular traffic pattern inside. With all those windows, I envision a herb garden and viny plants someday. I love how the natural light penetrates the entire home. If I owned this, I would add a small wood burning stove. And mosquito netting or burlap curtains on a track hung from the ceiling around the upper bedroom, as an option.

The only issue I have is with the deliberate decision to create a object that contrasts with the surrounding architecture rather than something that blends in with it. The shapes and materials chosen make this feel like a giant object taking up the space rather than adding to it. Overall, this idea can go places, especially in historical buildings and as a way to save construction costs.

Though I do try to do documentary-length videos from time to time. I'd like to carve out time to edit something longer in the next year and those tend to have more personal commentary.

I don't say this too often, but this is awesome!!!!! Some drawbacks but they have created rooms with no need to comply with building codes because the structure is merely furniture. Brilliant!!!!!!

It's different that's for sure! It's almost like a minimalist boxed in. Clean and simplified. Perhaps you need to add a pop of bright colors? The bedroom upstairs made me feel dizzy! I'm afraid of heights and I would probably have nightmares of me falling out of the sky just being in a space like that!😲!!!! You're so tall that I think you may eventually develop a hunched over posture. I am short and I started to have neck and shoulder pain. Mentally disturbing thinking about you in that space. I'm not even being mean. Just saying. Other than that, I love how you incorporated storage spaces in your home. 😊 P.S......where is your toilet? Just curious, too🤔

Hard, not 2 like good engineering, like this'n. Smart,...one could probably put together in a day or2, with minimal fanfare and basic tools...within or between columns - ad this 1 did...then have some conventional space 2 be well opened with light. This will become our future city scenario; probably by mandated, efficient need. Humans just don't need very much room...when efficiency is designed in. Another good "Kirsten" video

This is an interesting concept and it's stylish as well. But if I'm in the bedroom or bathroom and want to let natural light in, I have to walk all the way around to the outside of the structure? Why not the ability to open the shutters from inside? Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. But it looks cool.

I'm not a fan of the metal core not going all the way to the ceiling. I feel like it would look more finished if it went all the way up and then maybe had shutters or curtains that you could easily open to let light in from the rest of the studio. I love the concept and i think it works! But the "guest bedroom" probably would feel more finished and more like a guest bedroom if the walls of the core went all the way up to the ceiling. I think if i were to do this, i would also make it white instead of that color so that i could change accents in the space and have different styles if i wanted to. It would cost less money that way too. But that's what i would have done. I also don't know how i feel about the shutters opening up from the outside instead of the inside. It makes more sense to me to open them up from the inside so the user in the space can control it from the comfort of the room instead of having to walk out of the core and then opening them up.

I've got no problem with the design and execution but knock it off with the, "space," bullshit. Over here is the toilet space and over here is the shower space, and from here you can see the kitchen space... Space space space sounds pretentious and look in the sidebar, more space space space.

Can anyone briefly explain this to me, Does everyone doing this space renovation thing-y own the place? or they rent them but has some kind of protection that they won't get kicked out by landlords saying that they'll increase the rent or you're out? I wonder because it is very likely that landlords increase your rent after 2-3 years in my country especially when they think this kind of remodeling increased the value of the place, and we have to make 2 year contract if the landlords say so, which means this renovation is only good for 2 years and no one makes huge investment but some interior design we can take away with.

742 square feet is NOT a small space for two bedrooms! My chalet in the woods is just under 800 square feet and we've managed to squeeze a family of 5 in here, each of us having our own private space (even tho they're small). 69 sq meters in Paris is GIGANTIC.

It's a neat idea to have a module, but in my opinion, the materials its made of just kills it for me. : / It looks like they plopped a giant tub in the middle of the condo. I don't think it compliments the space at all, nor do I feel like it has an interesting dynamic with the original structure. It looks and feels like a bunker; cold, cramped, dark, unwelcoming. I think if they used different materials (perhaps wood to bring in the warmth instead of having the module be gold; the gold colour alone is not making it warm-it looks cheap, and the little "sprinkle" shaped holes makes it reminiscent of the Memphis design of the 80s, where rounded windows and accents were really popular, but you see them today and they just feel so outdated and sad). And I feel it would be more welcoming if it had a different design for how each space opens up or lets in light, instead of this slat-like design that brings to mind sliding slat closet doors found in cheap apartments. Also not a fan of the window screens that look identical to those plastic ones found in outdated 90s interiors. I know things from old come back in fashion and they took a creative risk in trying to redefine how people feel about the designs present in this space, but I feel it isn't quite effective; the way it was built creates associations that are too strong for people to see it in a new light. For it to be more effective, the elements should have a more cohesive blend with elements that people currently have positive associations with (eg. pale wood with white walls is typically associated with a clean, warm, minimal and modern home. Perhaps having the module made of wood would create the sense of it looking more like actual walls instead of it feeling like the walls of a metal tub). All in all, this is just my opinion as a designer.

I would find the metal most unpleasant, like living in a locker. Why not use wood, which feels and sounds far more pleasant to interact with? But...like others, I can imagine far simpler ways to get a bedroom, a bathroom and a loft into this space without blocking the light and creating an elephant as the room’s unwanted focal point.

Would make it modular so it can be relocated to another building. You should be able to roll into an elevator and load into a truck with a lift gate. Should have modulars for off season storage or hobbies. As children grow up. Can accomodate their needs baby, toddler, grade school jr high high school college dorm. A box truck rv

Personally I don't like it. I can see its appeal but I dislike the colour, the way he's explaining it all is way to artsy that is putting me off even the things i like about the place. I don't like the idea of an island, its wasting so much space that is only used for a minute amount of time. I Prefer to have a larger space available to me that can be modulated with screen doors. The second bedroom up there is a great idea! I would have just built the island in to a corner giving more storage to the bedroom/s.
