The local bushop must be running out of cash. This is what they do in that situation, they look churches with large endowments and shut them down, claiming the resulting windfalls for themselves. In all fairness, I can't know what is in the mind or soul of the bishop, but this type of behavior has become so prevalent that suspicions ate definitely raised.

What are the reasons for the closure of churches?

Many reasons: less catholics, less priests, rising costs to maintain and repair structures, rising costs for insurance and utilities, decreasing funds, the fact that we no longer need a polish, Irish, Mexican, or other ethnic churches within the same small radius. I get people becoming attached to their parish, but we have to be pragmatic and remember that our attachment is not to a church building, but rather to God in the community of the faithful. After all, God allowed the people of Israel to lose the ark of the covenant and the temple to be destroyed twice when they lost touch with the truth of worship. Maybe this time of consolidations, despite human intentions, might be part of God's will for us as a whole to get our act together. But that's my take on it.

The Bishop is using the excuse of fewer priest (supposed decline of priest in the future), lack of funds (parishioners are giving, but $ is consolidated into one pot, making it impossible to show what each church is doing)... When schools were consolidated years ago the local small community, fellowship was lost. Same will happen with closings of churches. You think that is not important?! This becon thing happened right after covid shutdown , telling people "no need for sacraments, but keep sending money.... Does that not make you suspicious.. Also, check out Canon laws on making priest move around so frequently. Not true! People need to learn the truth..

I think it's important that an independent financial audit be performed on each diocese and that an uunredacted copy be made available to any and all parishioners. We need to know EXACTLY where our money goes, especially in light of the billions spent on "settlements" caused by abuse and/or mishandling of funds. Priests and bishops are not MBAs and should leave the finances and negotiating of contracts up to professionals with complete transparency.

The number of Catholics regularly attending church has decreased, families are smaller, less nuns and priests to teach, increasing cost for teachers, facilities, books, etc. It all adds up.
