🤔 I got into the habbit of bringing a small backpack with a couple of books, a notebook, my journal and some index cards. I have my “writings tools” with me and depending on my mood, I mind read, write, take notes, or just stare into space while drinking coffee. But in that backpack, I’m covered.

Nice. I have to travel a bit lighter working in construction. I use a 3 x 5 notebook, keep a novel or other book in my lunch box and I even have a "pocket sized sketchbook" and felt tip pen in there too. It's made my lunch breaks more rewarding and helps me retain the podcasts I listen to at work....also I feel more clear headed and attentive during the work itself. I don't have a commonplace book yet. But I asked for a leather folio for my upcoming birthday that will also fit in my lunch box, too. One day at a time

What really helped me is understanding that it is ok to just stare at a blank wall and think or be bored. It is usually frowned upon and people would rather scroll away for hours instead of doing nothing for a few minutes

I recently started dedicating about 30 minutes every day to sitting in silence and doing nothing. Usually, after I finish work. I call it A Boring Session. Not only after 30 minutes I feel rested and often motivated to do something productive, I also remember many things that popped in my head at some point, something I wanted to do/check/look at, but that faded from my consciousness. Sometimes I reach some sort of meditative state where I don't notice time and spend more than an hour just sitting in the silence. It feels great.

I’ve tried to delete the apps off my phone but it’s so easy to just download them (sometimes hours later after I’ve deleted them) so I needed something different. During night time feeds with my daughter, to stay awake, instead of going straight to Instagram or Facebook, I started a Bible study plan on the Bible app.. such a better use of my time! Hi! I love these tips Parker! They are awesome! I decided to reduce my social media time instead of blocking it out all together. For me, it's all about intention. If I get the urge to just scroll because I want to run away from emotions or my boredom, I will start journaling instead so I can get what I'm feeling down on paper. If I want to go on KZbin and watch a specific video or creater or watch a video about a specific subject, I allow that for myself because it's intentional. The same goes for other social media apps too. I hope this helps someone who feels the only way to stop the infinite doom scroll is to cut them out completely.

Earlier this year I started using the "focus mode" on my phone to block social media apps during most of my waking hours. (I don't count KZbin as social media for this purpose because usually I have it on in the background while doing other things.) It's been a game changer and yes, technically I can pause the focus mode if I "need" to get to those apps but I've found that most of the time I don't want to! I did use to bring a book everywhere when I was younger so need to build this up again. Right now I have been keeping a book in the glovebox of my car so I can read if I get to work early, and I still am used to bringing books if it's any appointment that might involve a lot of sitting and waiting. 🤔

Hi Parker, thank you for this video ❤. I have been wanting to reduce my screen time for ages and I have been slowly building in more time for my “screenless” hobbies lately. I’ll schedule some reading time each day, half an hour here and there, I’ll work on a crochet or knitting project, or I’ll write some fanfiction or an entry in my diary. I find it very hard to break the cycle, though. My boyfriend and I very strongly suspect that I’m on the autism spectrum, and help for that is on its way, but we think that that is a big reason for not being able to break said cycle. I’ll definitely take your suggestions to heart and try to implement them. Keep up the good work 🥰

🤔 Thank you for these videos, I have been having a lot of issues with getting rid of social media for many years. And this approach is spot on, an addiction needs to be replaced with an activity that instead helps you in your life. I also must admit I have personal problems which I have drowned through social media usage, as escapism or avoidance. I have always had this habit of writing things on notebooks but I never know what to write "on the go". I am not a proper philosopher, I just think things and cannot, nor have the time to think deeply about things I wish I could. So I only have catch all ideas notebook. Many of the other ideas I write down are on my phone apps. I will go ahead and buy a portable notebook, thank you so much!

My method of choice is simply to “addiction hop”. Short form videos to KZbin mini series, then eventually video essays. Next comes webcomics (a medium of choice for me) which bleeds into fantasy novels. That is one way to build back up to reading. This does however revolve around the idea of constant consumption. Reading is only good so long as you are always reading type beat. Now I’ve managed to find some books that are good enough that I read them for 15 minutes to an hour but can still put them down and return to them later. This is all a long winded an round about way of saying temperance takes time and you need to find what works for you. Choose the most sustainable path so that you can achieve longer term goals. Remember, progress isn’t linear and it’s okay if you fall back on old habits ;)

Hey... I am a Class 12 student from India.... I recently discovered your channel and found it very helpful... I like to take notes and keep mini diaries for various purposes.... My aim is to score very high in my boards and as a part of it, i have kept a pocket diary in wich i write down all the relevant methods, ideas and strategies that minght help me to reach my current goal....I also write down a bunch of motivational and hard-hitting quotes... Going through my pocket note when i feel bored or want to scroll ... Its damn helpful and keeps me away from distractions.... Well do you have any tips or methods to use mini notebooks to help us stay away from distractions as well as stay motivated and focused on our aims....

🤔 Definitely some good suggestions there. I had already scaled back my social media years ago, deleting my Facebook due to the constant political and toxic content, so I have only had IG for the last 5-8 years. I did find it was best for me to just not have it on my phone, so that scrolling is not a problem. As with some of the other comments, i agree that KZbin is where i do my "scrolling". It has gotten somewhat better with my newish job, which does not allow me to bring my phone inside the facility. I also am not allowed to bring books in though, so that is a bummer. Trying to be more intentional about reading though, so will be utilizing some of ur suggestions.

As a well known philosopher once said, because of panopticism, the use of the surveillance through social media is like "voluntary servitude". That is why I I have no social media...and am grateful to you for promoting the use of a notebook.... no scrolling and no panopticism... and importantly, no voluntary servitude.

Amen!! I hope people read your comment and look up panopticon🙌

🤔 as always balance. I do get a good idea or suggestion on social media. Only the yield is very poor. I like your 4 domains, I will start using them. As I am working with obsidian and GTD I am going to reflect on the systems I use.

🤔 Hi Parker, thanks for this video. I really like the idea of having a notebook to encourage intentional thought about a previously formed idea. However, my mind tends to wander and sometimes I think that I'd like to pursue a thought for longer. I wondered whether you've come across a method for doing this - a set of questions to work through, or some other method to practice the discipline of sustained thought. Cheers!

Sometimes I'll do a mind dump and just write out all the thoughts that come to me. This signals to myself that I'm not going to forget what's up there so I can relax and focus on one thought now. Also, since I write down my thoughts, I can return at a later time when I'm able to be more focused and I can work them through then

One serious question, what do you use to carry around all your notebooks and books? I feel like a full sized backpack would be an issue walking into chain stores ECT where they might ask you to remove it (or maybe I'm just thinking too hard about it)

I have 3 or 4 leather briefcases/messenger bags that I rotate through 😅

I think fully cutting or severely limiting social media is a great idea. Though I’d be curious on your thoughts about replacing what you follow if someone didn’t want to cut social media. Instead of following the usual stuff switch to following other philosophers and/or people in fields that interest someone which could result in furthering knowledge instead🤔

I think the algos would still lure you into other places or still randomly show you someone dying still 😪

Yeah I didn’t think about the algos😞
