Man you have absolutely no idea how much i want to cry right now, I have been needing a mentor to help me go through self-discovery and making myself more concious and aware of my own thoughts, i tried reading, i tried journaling, but I always ended up with the same conclusion, I needed someone to help me, to guide me through it. I sumbled upon your "ntebook to save you from infinite scroolling and boredom" video and the relief it gave me. I'm going to binge watch all of your videos tonights, even though I know you wouldn't aprove of that. Thank you so much.

I feel like this is the simpler, consumer-level words for the types of notebooks: Self-mastery: planner External thought collection: commonplace Internal thought collection: journal

I get that but I think the categories include more than just those 2. External includes compendiums too. Internal includes catch-alls and not just journals as well as diaries which are different

I got several notebooks as well. I have one small field notes that I fill up in a month with plans, tasks, lists, little journal tidbits, thoughts, quotes, realisations, etc… then I have a larger commonplace book where I keep all kinds of notes on all kinds of subjects. And then I also have one for my recipes, resolutions, and a journal.

I like these categories. I'm new to using notebooks and pocket notebooks, I've typically just used my phone for quick notes and my iPad for written notes in the past. But I wanted to get away from the distractions on my iPad/phone which is why I turned to notebooks and found this channel. So far I'm using a larger notebook for planning my day, to do items, taking notes at work (your first category). Then I have a pocket notebook that is a blend of the other 2 categories, plus a place to just write things down that happen or something funny one of my kids says. Great video!

📓I give mad respect to you for all that you do and your notebook taking is a lot more organized and is inspiring! Especially the 7 KZbin channel pursuit. I'm trying to get my one in the big leagues knowing I'm hitting 6 different topics/goals! And I use the small notebooks as all 3 in a way plus record keeping. 📓I definitely use my pocket notebook as a true catch-all. Everything goes in there. I use a Rite in the Rain 3.5x5 inch soft cover sidebound memo book which I think is an underrated gem in the world of pocket notebooks. More pages than a Field notes and much more durable. Waterproof pages and cover. Solid horizontal ruling and then dotted vertical lines so you get a hybrid grid that is great for note taking and sketching. Also the notebook is a tool all on its own, on the back cover is an imperial and metric ruler and inside the front cover are various map scales and measurement conversions. The only down sides that I have found are that the coating on the pages is unable to properly take gel or fountain pen ink and the edges aren’t coated as far as I can tell. So a prolonged soaking will eventually cause some damage, but I’ve never experienced that.

I'm new here and a fan of notebooks 📓 I enjoy figuring out ways to consolidate notebook purposes - using the front of a notebook for contemplation, and flipping it over and using the back for storing proverbs or ideas to contemplate upon. I use a Traveller's Notebook (pocket) as my EDC and wallet, and have learned over the years that one notebook with minimal layouts for a bullet journal/planner, a second for 'brain-outs', and a third for long-form traditional journaling works best for me. Being able to keep them all in one portable place is exciting to me. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!

@ParkerNotes I watched the portion on propositional attitudes...and of course I thank you for not trying to upset me by mentioning substance dualism...that would really be putting Descartes before the horse...and it is of course, probably a debate for another time. I'm busy trying to organise my brain into Nietzsche's 'slave/priestly revolt' at present. Morality is always a good topic to discuss...and I can guarantee that you and I would disagree...but that's what they did in the coffee shops of London, Paris and Vienna, philosophers discussing and disagreeing. Thank you again my friend.

Thank you for the functional division. I came to pretty much similar approach with self-organizing/conspecting/creating, but I quickly found out that there are also "levels of depth" or, let's say, lifespan division of notebooks. For example, in terms of self-organisation, I have a "Strategic One" which is not to be changed often as it holds my more overarching "quests". At the same time there is a "Seasonal One" which is dedicated to tracking what must be done this day or this week or this month - more like in what you say about a "catch-all". 📚

A fourth type of notebook is the "Log" notebook (like a ship's log). This can be used to keep track of work on projects; logging what you have done, research you conducted, reading completed, actual progress and work you have done on the project, etc.

I also use three pocket notebooks, though I divide them quite differently: 1. Self improvement (both my own words and quotes from others, that serve as a guide to help me become a better person). 2. Mini commonplace book - all the mixed knowledge from various branches of science (including citations and my own reflections on them). All the things from this mini commonplace books later on are revised, transferred and organized in a larger commonplace book. 3. All the daily stuff - ideas or thoughts, that may seem useful later on, short impressions, etc. Except pocket notebooks I also use a calendar to structure my daytime activities and write to do lists.

I'm starting a new notebook journey this year with a couple cheap notebooks and so far they are just for anything I feel like. Any thoughts, ideas and feelings. I've always felt like thinking was a challenge for me and that my head is in a fog. I'm looking for clarity and hope it improves my mind and life. Thanks for demonstrating the possibilities and a little of your methods.

I use field notes books for on the go. Their bellroy collab sleeve can hold 2. So I have 1 for a task list / quick notes. And one for when inspiring quotes, lyrics, ideas, and so on come to mind from both my inspirations and my own thoughts. Then at the end of the day if any of those inspirational entries have made their way into my “draft common place book” I take the ones that really hit home and put them into a leuchtturm a6 hard cover. I use that as my “hub” of those that I find of high importance. This way I don’t have to worry about any damage and loosing them when I’m out and about. Because fieldnotes books aren’t that expensive and LT1917 kind of is lol

I would like to see how you do all your different cover pages. I think a lot of people get anxious to start when they see a blank book. The cover page helps get over that fear I think. I've been looking around for different ideas. I notice you have a mix of minimal covers and some decorated with stickers. Thanks for all you do! I also study philosophy, I'm about to finish my undergrad after study abroad. I also study Japanese so I used your proverb book idea to create a book of Japanese proverbs to contemplate while I'm out and about. I appreciate what you do here, keep being an inspiration!

I like the catch-all notebook idea that can then be transferred to one “long form” deeper thought notebook, later. I struggle with having too many notebooks myself. What I love to use most is my Travelers Notebook with 3 inserts: one for scrappy ideas, one as a todo list/bullet journal and one with irregular diary entries-that I fill whenever I believe I need to get something off my chest. Love your content, though.
@drewmorrison

I have gone all in with pocket notebooks. I even ditched my phone for the gym and opted for a field notes notebook. I let the gym time be my phone free time now. My mind feels clearer. Now when I’m bored, instead of scrolling on my phone, I read what I wrote in my current pocket notebook or write a thought in it. The point of writing the thoughts is to curate ideas. If I like the idea or thought, it’ll make it to the next notebook, if not, it won’t stay in the notebook. I put a lot of Musashi philosophy in mine to think about as well as some thoughts I’ve had on living life.

📓 I use a Unison notebook for planning and journaling. On the right is a weekly planning bullet like list and on the left I put my notes and ideas. I also keep a small pocket notebook just to collect whatever and those pages get ripped out as I move those ideas and thoughts to where they need to live. I use the note taking app Craft as my tool to digitally capture my ideas and lists. I find it helpful to both write out my ideas and then type them. I use the stopwatch on my Fitbit. I use 15 minutes, but you use whatever works for you. I decide how I am going to use each 15 minutes one block at a time. This is for work tasks, home chores, or leisure. You scroll for 2 hours because you don't have to decide to do it more than once. Things are designed to keep you from having to decide by streamlining the flow into the next video/dopamine source. I love leisurely scrolling on the same apps you mention, but I find having to consciously decide to commit another chunk of time each 15 minutes helps me say, "it's been enough, I should use the next one productively."

I have a pretty annoying dilemma. I used Field Notes for years as a way to journal thoughts and ideas, but I eventually started feeling OCD about using them alongside the Notes app on my phone. I eventually switched to just journaling in FN and taking notes in Notes, but as a professional writer who also does long-form creative work digitally, I eventually switched to digital journaling too. My brain wants it all to be consistent, and with digital journaling, I save space, have more privacy, can search, and have the entirety of my journals with me everywhere I go. The problem is I've been missing Field Notes really badly lately, and I don't know how to fit them back into my writing life with this all or nothing OCD mentality. It's very hard to turn my back on digital journaling with all its benefits, but it's also not the same. This may be an impossible personal problem.

@@ParkerNotes so funny you should mention briefcase! Sometime in early 2023 I started thinking about the briefcase my parents gifted me in the early 70s. One minute I’m wearing bellbottoms and fringed jackets in college and the next minute I’m asking my parents for a briefcase in preparation for my career life. I also started using.notebooks and planners of some sort back in high school in the early 70s. When I got my first career type jobi I remember purchasing a Filofax after I had saved up enough money. Those weren’t even that popular in the US but some finer retailers and pen shops did sell them. I was probably one of the first people to buy a FranklinCovey planner in the late seventies/early 80s and have been using them ever since. Anyway, got sidetracked so back to the briefcase. Back in 2023 I started obsessing about why I ever got rid of that briefcase. At some point in my life I must have decided I would never use it again, but I’m usually not the type to give something that special away, especially as it was a gift from my parents and it was leather and it was expensive at the time. It still upsets me. It was brown with gold hardware, the kind you snapped open. Man I loved the smell of the leather and the sound of that snap when you opened and closed it. Although I have several leather tote bags I was thinking how fun it would be to have a briefcase in my possession again. I imagined taking it to a coffee shop, laying it on the table flat, snapping it open and it would reveal several notebooks, a book I was currently reading, a journal, a nice leather rollup pencil case, my planner, etc., Sometimes digging through a never ending bottomless tote is a real pain. Once in a while, I will peruse Etsy and eBay for a vintage briefcase. I hadn’t thought about it in a while, so thanks for the reminder and trip down memory lane. Also thanks for all the notebook inspiration. I seem to collect notebooks but then neglect to write in many of them so it’s time to revisit some of them with all these great ideas you and others are sharing.. 🙂

I’ve tried using a pocket notebook because I’ve realized the diversions my devices often create for me in my notes app and stuff but I just can’t blend it in with my life style you know because i find writing terribly inconvient. A way I’ve attempted to make less friction for myself is by having only a notes widget and calendar as my entire Home Screen because i’m more likely to plan my day. If I can do it lying in my bed or on the bus or wherever then if I have to pull out a notebook and try to stabilize my hand or find a hard surface. I really wanna make this work though so any advice is sacred lol

Right now trying to figure out if I want to use a Field Notes or similar pocket notebook and transform it into a weekly/daily planner and to do list/self mastery notebook or get a regular dedicated planner. I've gotten a planner the past 2 years and while I enjoyed having it, I found that a lot of weeks, I'd fill out the planner at the beginning of the week, throw it my work bag, and then not open it up again until getting ready to prep for the next week.... if I switch to a pocket planner then it will be with me all the time and I'm always getting out my regular thoughts/ideas notebook so if I pair a small field notes with it I think I might be ok. And of course I probably am overthinking the whole thing hahaha. 📓

@@ParkerNotes Discbound notebooks, in some ways even more flexible than ringbinders, especially if you want to move pages from one notebook to the other. Disadvantage is that this can't be done as often as with ringbinders.

I do not make difference between external and internal becs ever since I read Ulysses and some Blaise Pascal, I knew I chew thoughts of others...But thoughts are different from feelings, and different from planning/execution. I think that people of today are also now in need of how to express themselves thought content creation (my pet peeve word de jour), so dastardy plans is just top notch idea!

In my pocket 📓 (😉), I don't discriminate between my own and third party ideas. The moment I reflect on a quote or aphorism, the two categories get mixed up anyway. What I might add is a (blank or dotted) notebook for mind mapping or sketching/doodling. Bot can be very helpful for certain creative or intellectual endeavors.

Subbed. Like your stuff. Both philosophy and theology. I was particularly curious about your self-mastery pocket notebook, the bullet-journal / timeblocking one. I'm going to try to track down more content of yours on that topic. I'm reeling with digital fatigue and failed half-started systems, and wanting to exert a little more order over chaos, comissioned gardner style. If I can follow your bullet-journal interpretation and timeblocking system, that looked very digestible from the very short clip you showed above. I got lost in the marginalia in my first bullet journal efforts, and that was prior to having two kids...

I know you primarily make videos concerning various notebooks, but do you think you could make a video books on a select list of categories (I.e., philosophy, theology, history, etc) that you’ve either (1) enjoyed most or (2) found to be most informative on the given topic. I love reading, but even more so I love studying. It would be so helpful if there were a list of books that I should buy to study more deeply a given topic. Seeing as you’re an expert in philosophy and theology, and these two topics are my area of interest as well, if you could point me in the right direction that would help immensely. Although, I totally understand if it’s not something you’d be willing to do. Thanks! I appreciate your videos very much. 🙂

Which ones would you combine.? Just a thought if you have the time, Thanks.
