When I first got involved with car audio it was because of people that I knew were driving around with systems that had woofers amplifiers crossovers and sound that I never heard in a car before. At first I started copying them, my first system had 2 twelves in a ported box with a monoblock amp. Everything else I had running off of a four Channel amplifier. Then when base became popular bigger amps more woofers things got completely out of hand it became an obsession. Came a time in my life when I realized in my opinion what kind of sound I like. In my opinion I want to be able to close my eyes and it should sound like the band is in the room with me. I'm not a bass-head anymore . I'm not looking to get it to the point where my windows are going to break where I'm going to Rattle the house for my AV system for instance. There's nothing like listening to a system that sounds like the actual band is in your listening area to me that's accurate sound. That's what I enjoy now. I know everybody goes through different stages of this Hobby.

@@ksavage681 Depends but in this case not really if you add another 12 of the same brand and everything and give it the same amount of power it will only be 3dB louder. For example that 35hz test with a 2nd 12 with the same amoutn will play 140.9 dB which is only .4 dB louder than one 15. May not be entirely correct depending on situations and stuff but the principle of it is.

I think the both will sound equally as loud when approaching xmax. The 15 will sound louder at lower volumes due to more air cfm and larger diaphragm. The difference in loudness you may hear could be your vehicle acoustics. In some cases, the 12 will outperform the 15.
@brettleisy356
@brettleisy356 2 жыл бұрын
@@ksavage681 if ohm and voltage is equalized then splitting the wattage will not see any significant increase. this is why I mentioned equal power. to see a significant increase with the 2 12s you would have to supply them with more power OR run the wiring in parallel effectively reducing the ohm resistance. however that will be effectively increasing the power supplied (and power draw). so isn't equal anymore. also zero cool's explanation of 3 db louder isnt very clear. 3 db is a very generic assumed gain over a single speaker solution. sensitivity, max excursion, and a few other things are taken into account as well as surface area. however if you are reaching your max power output you could actually see a loss as you may not be pushing enough power to push the speakers effectively.
@brettleisy356
@brettleisy356 2 жыл бұрын
@@godfreyofbouillon8861 in the case of both speakers the Qmax is the same at 23.5mm one way. meaning the 15 will still push more air at all levels. best way I found to setting up a system is figuring budget wish wires and electrical system upgrades if within budget. then figure amount of deletable space from the cabin/trunk/hatch area (some area may not be deletable due to needs/requirements for luggage or other item stowage) , figure how much room you have for enclosures for a box/wedge or a contoured solution. SPL is fun to play with, but in reality SPQ is where most people will lean. been listening to people in their SPL trucks for 30 years going BVVVVFRT BVVVVFRT BVVVVFRT and nothing else and it just sounds horrible.

Its pretty well known that 2 subs different size, cone area will win. Imo the real "myth" that needs busting is what to do with specific box size limits. Ex. I have approx 3.5cuft of airspace, 2 4inch aero ports tuned 35hz ish. Currently have 2 12's in it. Would it be louder to have 2 10's in the same box retuned to the same 35hz or do my 12's hit louder even though the box is "small" 2 10s 3.5 cuft 2 12s 3.5 cuft Way i see it i might get better lows with the 10s but would lose peak output. Thats the test i want to see.

It's about moving air to build pressure. If you look at the cone area x xmax you get the volume of air you're moving. You're absolutely right on matching the box as well. If you go too high or low the sub won't be able to move air as efficiently needing more wattage to do the same same amount of work.A poorly sized box will absolutely kill output.

true so much goes into the math of figuring the best box in real world, that it really is dependent on box size, build, design, material used, etc... back in early 2000's I had 2 JL audio W6 12s in a custom sealed box in the trunk of my 2004 Acura 3.2tl and my buddy had 2 Rockford Fosgate punch 15s in his SUV and in a homemade box. Mind u that box was not just thrown together but still those speakers could not hit you like my smaller 12s did. And the BOX is what i Believed it came down to...

My life in car audio has shown me that the box is just as important if not more important than the subs going into it. They can completely change the way a sub sounds and how it responds to different music types. Yet for SPL I've found cone size is the key, and the bigger the better, but there is a point of diminishing returns due to the limited space of the vehicle, power available, and price.

Yup, you got it! I remember building my first custom box, into my '89 firebird. An awesome car for loud bass, due to the back glass. But, even then, building a box from plywood (I know, laugh away) vs my second iteration in 3/4" MDF and proper math to calculate air space, I understood the physics and, from there on, made sure that my boxes were built to spec and with proper materials.

@Patrick S nothing wrong with plywood, although you do have to design and measure any box. Before i knew about port tuning I just stuck a random cardboard tube in. Found out later in hornresp I'd tuned to 11Hz haha. My 40 Hz 3/8" plywood box turned out fine and doesn't flex due to the bracing. I could probably build a decent box with 1/4" ply but would have to brace the thing like a dang model aircraft!

@@Titans2138 You guessed 100% correct on that. They must have had the highest sensitivity of the bunch because they would be the loudest on small power, but they hit a hard wall so fast they just can't take more power like the Sundown and American Bass can, when RF says 600-750w RMS they mean that quite literally, I almost smoked coils not clipping sending around 1kw clean to it which means they were likely clamping 600-800w each and it was too much. The Sundown SA15v2 took more power and could play longer, but whenever the coil was far out of the gap it would get so hot, the SA lineup doesn't like digging below port tuning much at all, same thing - heat, heat, heat. The American Bass Hawks I'm sending about 1,200w each and I run it at a soft clip tuned to 7.5db overlap with DD-1+, and they are just screaming for more power. They just flex and flex, make so much fucking noise the SA15's metered at 144.2 with less power so I'm sure these are closer to the 150db mark, don't have a meter to test it. They never get that hot, they get warm, but I'm never smelling voice coil adhesive or anything like that like I would with the SA and P3. The Hawks from AB seem to handle their true 1,500w RMS rating and for like $215 how the hell can you go wrong? Sundown's equivalent U15 is OVER $400!!! Identical specs!

Every 3db is a doubling in audible volume. Every 3 db also needs a doubling in watts. So if you are doing 127db at 250 watts, you should get around 130db at 500watts and 133 at 1000watts. 136db at 2000watts etc.

while cone area is generally king, motor force is also a factor. which is why we see people rocking 8" subs sounding like their bumping 12 or 15s, cause them 8s have bigger motor force then generic cheap 12,15 and 18s with mini magnets. box size is also a huge factor.

I like these kinds of test, and I'm sure there's plenty of people that do also because like most automotive related modifications car audio is almost always about takeaways. An example such as having limited space for a certain number and size of subwoofers most people ponder the thought of how much decrease or increase in SPL will there be if downsizing or upsizing. If there is limited space and have to downsize the decision to go with a higher RMS subwoofer in order to bring back and achieve a certain SPL would be needed. This kind of test but with a 10 inch and a 12 inch subwoofer would be interesting and useful to see because they both are the most popular sizes to use. To make things easier and more fare the Skar Audio DDX-10 D4 and the Skar Audio DDX-12 D4 both have the same 2.5 Inch Voice Coil and the same RMS (1000 Watts) and Peak Power (1,500 Watts).

It doesn't take that much more power, if all other perimeters were equal. The MMS of the 15 is higher, but that is mainly going to change the drivers FS and where it is efficient. It's not enough to change the motor force needed by much. By the time you change the back pressure of the box by making it larger, it's not much of a change in power needed at all.

If you would like to put science to this testing, I would be happy to help with how to set up the experiments. I really am impressed with how you set up the study and adding repetition to the study by repeating each step of the experiment a minimum of three times provides the data that allows a true statistical study. My point is you certainly then could scientifically say with statistical significance whether or not your study does show a difference between the 12" and 15" subs

video suggestions -subs on different ohms (2k to sub @4ohm vs 2k sub @1ohm). of course youll need different amps to run this test, but does it make a difference? what hits harder, easiest on electrical, sounds the cleanest etc? running higher ohms cost so much more but is it better? back in the day, rockford didnt do amp less than 4ohms if i remember correctly. math my settle this but real world testin would be cool. -lowest/smallest/least to do a decent hair trick 1 sub, 2 subs 12, 15 whatever. -best system on a factory electrical system, stock alt. when to start adding batteries, alternators? i kno these depend on car/speaker size and what not but would be nice to see real world testing and to get a bass line for my next build.

Power delivered is power delivered, regardless of impedance. Different amplifiers use different circuitry, optimized for different loads. Higher efficiency amplifiers will draw less current from the electrical system while producing the same output, but the end sound will be determined by the subwoofer and enclosure characteristics, in addition to installation and vehicle transfer function. With so many variables, real world testing is done best in your own car. Honest advice, stick to reputable names with solid build quality and custom-build all enclosures. Overkill on power cables is always a good thing. Cheers One last note: DC resistance is not the same as impedance. Impedance includes the inductive reactance of the coil (inductor), which changes at different frequencies. MECP Master Tech, Lic# CEA212201 Electronics Engineer

Nobody ever said a 15" sub is louder than a 12" sub. The larger the sub, the lower the frequency of sound it is able to deliver. A larger sub may actually sound quieter, because the human ear cannot hear ultra low frequencies. However, ultimately the loudness will be determined by the wattage.

I recall an article written by Richard Clark back in the early 90's where he stated that larger subwoofers were not louder, they just played lower frequencies louder. I always thought that since subwoofers played low frequencies only, that playing lower louder would in turn make larger subs louder. It always seemed that way to me. I've got a Ridgeline with 2 sundown SA 8's off a Rockford punch 200dsm, and I've got a Yukon with the same amp running 2 sundown SA 12's. I know the vehicle acoustics are not the same but the 12's hit waaaaay harder.

Larger cone surface area is going to win out every time, all other variables being equal. A transducer(speaker) is nothing but an electrically driven piston or diaphragm that reproduces sound waves. Sound waves are waves of moving air at varied frequencies that humans, in this case, receive and interpret by said wave of moving air impacting the diaphragm of the ear that is the Timpanic Membrane a.k.a. the ear drum. The volume of sound waves at any given frequency, be it static or dynamic, is measured in decibels. The louder the volume the higher the measured decibels. Now that we have established all that, logic (along with physics and basic acoustics) dictates that the larger the "paddle" the more "water" it can move in a given "stroke". Since we are dealing with acoustics, we can substitute relevant terms in the above analogy: the larger the transducer diaphragm(speaker cone) the more air it can move at a given frequency. In summation, there was no need for the "test" as logic and basic physics gives us the answer to the question posed. There you go...scientific answer for your non-scientific test/question. Lol!!

Let's also discuss whether it's just for SPL or whether it's about tuning your system to the music genre you appreciate and listen to regularly. 15s aren't more efficient, they simply have a larger cone area and can move more air. This doesn't work me, as 15s get super muddy on rock and EDM. Would rather have 3 10s than 2 15s....I feel the 3 10s a lot tighter on the drums than I do with the 15s, they just can't retract fast enough for the next thump....Again, just depends on what you listen to.

Best comparison I’ve heard is think drums. Is the snare any softer in a marching band. No is the tympony the soul yep. If you want the sound in your chest go 10 if you want it in your car go 12 if you want the neighbors to hear the bass and not you go 18

dB's aside 12's are best all around sub, but if you are willing to give up accuracy for deep bass the 15's will not disappoint .I like 10's for sq.
