Replacing parking brake shoes can be a little intimidating. However, I'll show the step by step process on how to disassemble every single component, install new parts and the proper break-in technique. New brake shoes cost $25. A parking brake, also known as a handbrake or emergency brake, is a mechanism used to keep the vehicle securely motionless when parked. It is typically designed as a hand- or foot-controlled lever in most vehicles.

Typical parking brake components include: brake shoes, return springs, adjuster assembly, connecting rod, pivot pins, retainer springs, rod spring, parking brake lever, anchor bolt, pivot pin, wave washer and u-clip.

Not sure which vehicle you're doing this on, but it's enough information (along with the repair manual) to make sense out of it for my Honda Ridgeline. So far, the most informative video on KZbin regarding this process. Thanks for the step by step!

you are very correct sir being smart and safe is not political, taking good care of yourself is not selfish you are protecting the most valuable people in your family . your babies . most beautiful your parents they are the ones that are at risk. we know they are right in front of you today, this covid is so bad once it hits them and next thing you know they have been taken away . we are the ones that have to be very careful PLEASE EVERYBODY WASH HANDS AND PUT ON A MASK

Finally...someone other than my mechanic who uses a hammer to break loose a bolt 😅..... he even whacks to open the crankshaft bolt.... no fancy impact gun etc...minimal basic tools.

As far as the adjuster assembly you mention at 17:36 the threaded end should be pointing towards the REAR of the vehicle, correct? And that applies to both sides, correct? Thanks!

In the video, he says to the right as we are looking, which means in this particular vehicle he puts the threaded part to the FRONT and not to the rear. Most commonly ??, the threaded part goes to the rear. But what annoys me is that nobody i've seen explains WHY, what does it matter.

at 23.12 put some antiseize onto the hub BEFORE rotor placement ...makes for easy removal for the next guy , who is usually you ...at 19.32 may consider putting some grease onto the 6 support points onto which the shoes rest/slide

my question is did you leave parking brake on while driving? they should last very long if only use to set your parking brake

Might be useful to mention that the pins corrode easily, and might need replacing, but they come in a kit which is a bit expensive for what they are.

Here he has 2 screws to tighten the wheel disc on before he tightens the shoes with the adjuster wheel. Some cars don't have them screws. For those, I think it's important to ensure that the disc is square on, as otherwise the disc can come to hard stops, which is most concerning, especially if like me you can't figure out why.

The pin and spring type design has been around for ages and to me is annoying as you need 3 hands to install. If this were the construction industry they would have redesigned this so it could be done super easy in a couple of seconds which surely must be embarrassing if you were an engineer.

Ok video is good. But should never need to replace park break shoes. Anyone who drives with park brake on is probably not going to be able to change shoes.
