Currently replaying Syndicate and in all honesty I don't mind the parkour design or the grappling hook addition (Tbh it makes me feel like Victorian Batman). Something to remember (that I realized when replaying) is that Assassin's are trained in whatever environment they're in. Connor knows how to jump from tree to tree because he grew up and was trained in the woods. Ezio, for all his flair and drama, knows best how to blend in with crowds and run on walls and roofs with guards constantly monitoring the ground, so he had to be careful and watchful. Evie and Jacob, however, were trained in a small city and sent to London, with all buildings and no guards (occasional Blighter or cop, though). They know how to climb buildings because that's that they were taught to do. Assassin's are born, raised, and trained in different environments, so it makes sense to me that their parkour is more straightforward and a lot less fancy or showy than other assassin's.

Syndicate’s parkour. While it’s more difficult and restrictive. I still believe that there’s a lot to get out of it. Like hell if the rope launcher wasn’t in this game. I think more people would actually put the time and effort to learn this system more and figure out how to work around it’s flaws.

Great points! I agree with you 100%! I actually get a kick out of experimenting with the different variations of “parkouring.” I first played through this game on my PS4 about a year ago but have slowly transitioned most of my gaming to my new Omen laptop where I also now use a PS5 controller. I must say the whole experience feels really graceful and much more smooth/responsive than the PS4 did. Also…you can’t beat the Ultra Graphics settings either lol! The dive and grab animation is sooo satisfying and I’ve found I can pull it off much more frequently now than ever before. For me it’s made using the grappling hook relatively unnecessary unless I’m bridging a large gap or needing to get out of a tight spot quickly. I’m more of an intermediate level player at this point and so I think a lot of the game’s “perceived flaws” are more user error rather than the game having an issue. Maybe they just aren’t as good as they think they are lol! It certainly is different and sometimes “different is good.” We as gamers tend to get really comfortable and when something else comes along that isn’t exactly the same it causes a negative reaction. Unity is every AC fan’s “gold standard” and so anything else seems to be considered inferior and by default gets a bad rap. Syndicate is one of my fav entries (next to AC 3 and 4.) It’s the first AC game I chose to purchase for my PC and I couldn’t be happier parkouring my life away lol!

What was good about revelations parkour is the hook blade is used to enhance the existing parkour mechanics rather then redesign them. The problem with syndicate is you literally don’t need the parkour once you have the grapple gun, also the world is more designed for the grapple gun with large roads dividing buildings for you to grapple to making parkour very limiting

But it’s just more practical to use it instead. I’d say this is one of the reasons it’s one of the weaker games in the series imo, the setting is a bit too modern for an AC historical setting

Nice vid! Though I'm disappointed that Syndicate didn't really innovate with the parkour, the grappling hook is an understandable addition but it kinda just makes the player lazy. Maybe it could be a limited tool, like the grappling hook needs to cool off after a certain amount of uses. In addition to that, adding more ways to move horizontal, adding more ropes, more swan dive beams and making breakfall consistent

Syndicate began the trend of map design being in service towards the world more than the gameplay, really. More ropes would kind of look off in this setting, especially with streets so wide, so we end up with a super abusable rope launcher to cross gaps. A necessary evil, but then again I suppose streamlining efficiency is also what the industrial revolution is about... A cooldown would be nice though, I suppose. Anything to keep you from just rapidly going upward. Never mind the laziness of skipping the entire parkour process of getting up on the roof, it's not even all that interactive; you're locked into the animation like you are for much of Unity/Syndicate's movement mechanics, but here the travel distance is way longer so it stands out a bit. You press a button to rocket up, that's it. There are no stylish tricks to learn to improve or modify your traversal process. You can't show off, and showing off is the main thing Unity parkour had going for it over the tighter pre-Kenway controls. Even for the actual parkour you get moments (this clip has them too, say between the suspended wooden platform and the metal beam) where you are just visually vacuumed to your jump destination in an unrealistically fast line, but I digress.

I don't think the setting holds much value to that aspect, the movement should be interactive, by removing the manual jump and making the parkour an afterthought because the grappling hook costs one press of a button is seriously a disservice to what made the series interesting in the first place and I agree the ropes are not era appropriate but it's not something that breaks immersion but if we exclude ropes, we would easily have things like protruding beams from where you jump and to the building and catch ledge, the grappling hook is just kinda lazy and it's fun if you want to just shut off your brain for a while but in the long run, I don't think it's that innovative

I was just pointing out that in a twisted sense sacrificing quality for efficiency kind of matches the setting of this game. Doesn't mean that it doesn't still suck. If a setting cannot lend well to the gameplay that a series wants to achieve, then I'm honestly of the opinion that they should've just picked a different place entirely, but that can be somewhat difficult the closer in time the simulation approaches the modern world. The ancient settings of the RPG entries is just as bad for opposite reasons though, there's nothing worth climbing in towns.

No one's forcing you to use the grappling hook. It's optional. Sure you could cross that gap with a nice zipline thanks to your grappler, or you could traverse down the building and run through the streets instead. **I personally like not using it, and only ever use it for going up short distances. (For example, a 2 story building.)

Traversal in this game could've been god tier. what they should've done is made it so the grappling hook can only zipline so it's useful for clearing large gaps but you still need to use parkour to get high up to begin with. On top of that they should've made unsafe jumps possible and made it so that you could use the grappling hook in mid air. Imagine accidentally jumping off one of those sky scrapers and then having to catch yourself with the grappling hook before you hit the ground.

I never played this game due to the parkour being watered down (which they could of just made smoother but opted out and chose the easy way), the combat being weird, and the lack of hoods while standing. But I’ve played through it and was pleasantly surprised. London is very immersive, you get used to the parkour, and stealth is honestly really fun.

This new WWII AC will have elements of Syndicate. The brawler fights, the gadgets etc. It'll be fun to see the fighter planes and whether or not you can use planes. Ubisoft has always foreshadowed features and this another example. In AC2 we get to use Da Vinci's flying machine in AC unity we get to seee fighter planes in a WWII France, its exciting.

Writing this in 2024: this parkour system is what we need back. Just imagine this system with a jump button like Unity and certain features from AC1, AC 3 & AC 4. It would be the best parkour. The movement also felt realistic compared to the RPG games. It felt like the characters had realistic weight on them too. Same thing with Unity even though this game’s parkour felt much more realistic than Unity since Unity had certain parkour moves that looked unrealistic

The main problem I had with Syndicate's parkour was the fact that you're not incentivized to use it during gameplay. It's always faster to use the grappling hook and just run on the rooftops or take a carriage. There is almost no situation where you'd want to free run along building's walls.

There's a lot of compounded problems with AC Syndicate's movement: 1. The environment is not built for parkour, it's built for a grappling hook 2. The grappling hook has no downsides so you're incentivized to use it over learning movement 3. The movement is more floaty than ACU is, probably due to the environment not being as detailed for parkour That's just a few. Syndicate is by no means a bad game, just a disappointment because it could've been what redeemed ACU's engine and mechanics, we could've seen an improvement. Just imagine the direction AC could've gone if they had only done so

What the, how are you doing side hop/eject so often here? Was't that really nerfed for syndicate? Hell even in Unity it's pretty contextual .

Yeah in Syndicate you do side ejects by holding only high profile and the direction you want Evie or Jacob to go to (in Unity it was high profile, parkour up and direction). Like in Unity its contextual but you can learn really quick were you can perform this moves. I can also recommend you the Syndicate parkour guide from Dallin_S. He explained every parkour move you can do in this game

@@circa81 it can be. Syndicate doesnt only have the side eject animations from Unity. They also have new animations were your Charakter jumps in the direction you wont them to go but just hangs there instead of standing on top of the object. I could imagine that you maybe dont recognize them because of that. At least this was the thing for me.

If any Game needs mods to the Parkour it's Syndicate. Once you realise you can't manually jump in the Game it completely ruins the flow the older Game's are known for.

@@thedudejqn to me the smoothest Parkour systems in the AC franchise are in this order 1 Unity 2 Revelations 3 Brotherhood What I didn’t like about Syndicate was the line launcher and the fact you couldn’t jump large gaps between buildings like in Unity and the Ezio trilogy

This is the problem with AC players, wait until Mirage comes out, they’ll be saying the same - it’s rigid and limited. Ppl want freedom but at the same time, they want to stick to the old assassins creed genre of gameplay. If it’s limited, you say it’s rigid and if it’s sophisticated, it’s too much. 🤷🏻♂️ Syndicate stuck to the genre but received an ample amount of hatred 💁🏻♂️ Syndicate deserves more admiration but yes, the parkour, gotta admit was a little lot disobeying at times 🥂

well thing is the old AC games (AC1-AC Rev and to an extent AC3) have way more freedom and control and depth in the parkour/freerunning system than any of the newer games

Sorry this was cool in back in 2007 with the original. We had never seen fluid and realistic animations like that and it was so satisfying. But now? It’s bog standard and the most boring way to get around. I mean we have games where you can fly, glide, swing, teleport, everything under the sun. And every attempt to make traversal like this more engaging just fails. Even uncharted 4 had better traversal mechanics and all it did was add a grappling hook. It really is the unskipable cutscene of gaming.
