The Florida mansion has one more minor but really cool change that didn't get mentioned, but I understand as it's extremely easy to miss. After the stretching room scene ends and the door opens, hang back so you are last to leave the stretching room and listen closely. New audio was added in 2007 of the gargoyles WHISPERING at the guests as they leave the room saying things like "Stay together", "Look alive", and "Get out!!". I have to thank the blog Long Forgotten for pointing this out as I don't think I would've noticed this otherwise. It's really quite creepy and effective as the statues themselves are motionless, but these creepy whispers just echo around the room. Really, really easy to miss but such a cool little detail that adds to the overall theme of the ride: Are the gargoyles actually talking to you, or is it your imagination hmmm??

I think the reason I love the original more has to do with the outside, as it just feels more in place as apart of New Orleans, like it's something you'd expect to walk up to, and you can even get this feeling of terror just from standing by the gates with it.

Interesting. I do believe the facade is themed well as it's fits in New Orleans Square. But as a southerner, to me it just looks like any old antebellum building, and not so foreboding. I think the old New England facade on top of the hill looks more "haunted", especially at night when you see the ghosts crossing past the window. But to be honest I enjoy both versions of the ride, and appreciate the differences.

@@thebikewatcher9819 Lol, I like how our perceptions differ! Because as a non southerner who’s never really seen that much antebellum houses in my life, I’ve always found the original Disney facade a lot scarier because I see the front pillars looking like teeth and the house almost looking like it has a face. Personally, I’ve found the WDW facade not as creepy because it looks cozy and glamorous to me, especially the open patio with the plants and the light-brown colored bricks of the mansion. 😄

I was the WDI Production Designer who put in the revised Scene 4 (Lightning Paintings) and Scene 6 (Grand Staircase). Thanks for doing this video. Magic Kingdom's Stretch Gargoyle Cornice had to be re-designed/built to accommodate the wonderful 100 speaker driver sound system in the Stretch which allows the Ghost Host to "go THROUGH you" as it crosses the room. A lot of work went into the 2007 rehab and I salute the whole team for doing a bang up job on this classic.

Damn, this was cool... Having always loved the Magic Kingdom's Haunted Mansion -- while not having been out to the park in forever -- and never having actually been to Disneyland, I always wondered what all of the major differences between the rides were. Of course, there are lots of videos covering the histories of both rides, and you can kind of break down all of the details of the differences, if you really set your mind to it. But, a succinct, informative video like this, perfectly rounds down all of that information, and saves a whole lot of time. Great work! My first thought as to a secondary video topic, falling under this particular 'differences' theme, would be my second favorite ride in Magic Kingdom; Pirates! That is, if there are enough differences between them to warrant one.

Even as a homegrown Disneylander, there is no doubt the ride experience at Florida is superior. I didn't think the extra rooms (library, staircase, sinister 11) made much of a difference but then I actually went to Disney World and was blown away by how much larger and smoother the entire experience is. I still favor Disneyland (nostalgia freak) but for the last decade+ I've had to make dual trips every other year to both WDW and DL.

The only real element that I missed with the Florida Mansion compared to the California one, is the sensation of the stretching room actually moving as the elevator lowers. It really gives you a sense of unease that you can feel the room "stretching".

@mendari2907
@mendari2907 6 жыл бұрын
I would like to add that the reason the stretching room in the Florida version doesn't work as an elevator, and instead has a rising ceiling, is because that Florida is just barely above sea level, and so it is impossible to build underground, and so basements are impossible.
@mendari2907
@mendari2907 6 жыл бұрын
This is the same reason the living with the land pavilion at epcot is built upon a manmade hill, they wanted guests to enter the building on the top floor, and descend into the bottom floor, but a basement on ground level is impossible, so they built their own hill to dig into.
@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin 6 жыл бұрын
There's also no reason for it, since the Florida show building is inside the railroad tracks. Florida's Space Mountain does have some contrivances to get guests under the tracks going in and out, since it's an issue there.

@ezrahiker50
@ezrahiker50 3 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencepatricksingson8831 It was put in Tokyo's Fantasyland because ghost stories are more often seen as fairy tales in Japanese culture. Disney didn't know if Tokyo would be a success so, as according to the Disney+ Imagineering story, they did random "cookie cutter" designs from DL and WDW. That's why Adventureland has a New Orleans section, Space Mountain is the DL version, and the Haunted Mansion is the WDW version. It's really a thrown together park.

My issue with the Florida mansion is that you barely see the Mansion. The line is behind the big gates and then you're walking underneath big covered walkways so there's no apprehension as you get closer as there is at Phantom Manor or California. It feels disconnected.

I'd say it was mostly meant to be viewed and noticed from across the water. Giving the impression of being foreboding and creepy. Then its kind of already lingering in the back of your mind before you even head over to the mansion... This was my experience, when I was 7 anyway, and I remember the anticipation and butterflies in my chest fondly.
@joesmith389
@joesmith389 5 жыл бұрын
There’s a reason for that. Most of it can only be seen from either across the River or just prior to the queue line. And with the Florida rain, it makes it look pretty darn creepy, large, and imposing. Looking at it, you can tell it’s not a “house” like DL’s is, but large gothic stone castle mansion. Remember, nothing is left to chance with Disney. There’s a reason for every little plan and detail. A lot was learned from the mistakes of DL (not that they’re “mistakes” 😉)... there’s a reason WDW is the flagship of the Disney empire.

Seconded. Disney seems to favor the Florida setup for other attractions, though. Tokyo HM does the same thing, but Phantom Manor does not. Mystic Manor in HK is also entered from below. They didn't just make duplicates of all of the props. Imagineer Jason Surrell's book, The Haunted Mansion: Imagineering A Disney Classic, makes clear they made all interiors for both mansions--i.e. all elements of all scenes from top to bottom--simultaneously. Meaning, essentially, they are BOTH the first Haunted Mansion. Unlike any other Disney headliner, the East Coast and West Coast Haunted Mansions don't draw from each other or build on each other or improve on each other. With the exception of space allowing one to be longer than the other and geology not allowing one to have an actual elevator, they essentially are each other.

One thing I really miss from the Florida ride is back before the 2007 refurb, instead of the hallway of portraits that changed with the lightning strikes, it originally had a narrow hallway with the Sinister 11 portraits that had glowing eyes that followed you. It used to creep me out as a kid.

It’s already been commented on, but you forgot to mention the Sinister 11, the portraits whose eyes follow you. Seven of them are in the loading area, two before you get to the stairs, Medusa is still in the hallway but she morphs now, and one is between the Grand Hall and Attic.

I personally prefer Disneyland’s due to many reasons. The first, and most obvious is it’s historical value. Other reasons include it’s more elaborate wallpaper, wainscoting, and intertwined design elements (the same lion corbels in three places, similar window designs, etc...) It also more closely adheres to the three act structure. Frightening sounds THEN strange images. This concept was ditched at WDW when they decided to include the decomposing portrait effect. I also enjoy how in the DL Version you walk around the entire house and enter through the back door. In WDW you enter through the side of a hill and never fully appreciate the manor grounds. This is was just my personal opinion. Both are amazing rides!

On a Spring break long long ago [before fingerprinting] we managed to position ourselves at the end of a group, late at night when the HM was running slowly. We hopped off and toured the backstage from catwalks to under the graveyard or seance room. Nowadays that can get you permanently banned for life, so don't do it. But in 1986 it was a BLAST. Then I got a job which took me to LA, so I got to do some self guided backstage touring of the Anaheim HM as well. Great fun! Super old theatre tricks, and it's all just a big wooden set in a giant soundstage / warehouse.

Yeah, the latticework pattern in the window leadwork and decorative chimneys are most certainly mock Elizabethan features. That being said, the overall form of the mansion, with its high peaked gables, along the smaller details, like the wrought iron conservatory and rooftop ornaments, firmly place it in the early Gothic revival movement.

Another incarnation of the Mansion that deserves mentioning is the one in Tokyo, which features the best lighting and updated, more smoothly animated animatronics, plus it's the only version of the ride that still features the classic attic with pop up ghosts and beating heart bride... Plus one of my favorite effects, which I wish was included in every Mansion, the face that comes out of the portrait in the hallway of doors... It appears right after the conservatory on the right hand side, about two doors in right before the cars make a bend to the right...if you turn around you can see the face push out through the spandex type cloth as the mouth opens in a moan, then it recedes back into the portrait again .... This effect is exclusive to the Tokyo attraction, and the printed face on the canvas must be replaced every few months because it wears out being stretched back and forth so often, but it is so worth it you can see it in some of the Tokyo Haunted Mansion videos...

The portrait hall at WDW is a brand-new addition. it's an upgrade from the original portrait hall, redone only a few years ago long *after* the 2007 addition of the Escher-style staircases. The original portraits just had cut out eyes that followed you, and no windows. The Hall of Mirrors changes are not projected onto the mirrors. They are simply video screens behind the mirrors, which are now clear glass. The guest images are now live camera feeds to simulate the reflection and help the computers map where to place the animated ghosts. Another change from the original are many of the vocals in the graveyard jamboree. Several at WDW were inexplicably replaced in the 2007 rehab, while Disneyland still uses the original vocals. Check out videos of the Tokyo Disneyland version. It was an exact copy of the Florida Mansion, except for the Japanese Ghost Host. It has remained unchanged, and gives us a look at what the Florida Mansion was like when it opened in 1971 (with the exception of one small Corridor of Doors effect that is not in any of the other Mansions).

There is something really cool (but inconsistent) enabled by projection in the new FL hitchhiking ghost scenes. The ride has the ability to detect rider identities (presumably through MagicBands) and customize the projected image. I rode it a few years back and the ghost for our DoomBuggy erected a tombstone with both of our names on it. Seeing our names in the mirror with the ghost was instantly delightful. However, more recently I've ridden it again, again wearing a MagicBand, and did not get any personalization. We both were thrilled the previous time when it did happen, but we are also fanatics (engineer + artist & former cast member, multiple visits most years, multiple parks) so maybe we are outliers. It's possible some people thought it was too personal / creepy.

The one in Paris isn't long for this world, apparently--the coaster is staying but it's getting an Iron Man re-theme.

Normally I prefer Anaheim’s attractions over Orlando’s, but Haunted Mansion is an exception. I like Orlando’s Haunted Mansion slightly more because the ride is longer.

its funny because the house is Disneyland is based off of the Shipley Lydecker Mansion in Baltimore which is closer to Florida than to california, and the Disney World house which is in western Pennsylvania is closer to Disneyland. its like the theming and the locations should have been switched, or maybe they meant to do it that way so that California could experience the one culture vs the other.

What's inside the actual mansion part in Fl? Is it just a facade?

It's mostly just facade yes, you walk in underneath the left side of the mansion but you aren't really under the facade for long.

The only aspect of the attraction that I truly prefer in the CA mansion is the Hatbox Ghost. Other than that the FL mansion is superior. This is looking at the rides themselves and not taking into account what was built first and who directly worked on them.

I love the original Haunted Mansion, I think it's awesome and when I think of the Haunted Mansion, in my mind I see the one at Disneyland. But I have to say, as far as looks go, WDW has it beat. That large brick mansion just looks scary. I read on another site, that when Tokyo was built they went with the WDW style architecture as opposed to the Disneyland antebellum look, because the Imagineers felt it was more imposing and just looked more like what you think of as a typical haunted house.

Would love to see a video on the differences between the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom Pirates of the Caribbean rides. I went to the Disneyland version first and was disappointed in the Magic Kingdom ride. It seemed much less immersive and more of a ride rather than a "fantasy". Thanks!

Which one is better? The one at the Park you've visiting! While this isn't directly related to the attractions, having lived in both Central Florida and Southern California, I'd add that unless it's raining (which only happens occasionally in winter or early spring) there is NO bad time to visit Disneyland. Meanwhile, summers in Orlando - very hot and very humid, and when most people can take a vacation - can be brutal.

It's true, the organ at Disneyland is higher than the MK version. Here are two videos where you can compare the different sounds. Disneyland Key: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zounip6Pf75perc Magic Kingdom: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHWtga2seJt7btk

You forgot to mention the madam leota statue that blinks outside of the magic kingdom. The haunted mansion music also plays in the line at magic kingdom. At Disneyland it does not. You can also hear the howling dog at magic kingdom. At Disneyland you cannot. Oh and madam leota floats a different way at Disneyland in more of a side to side motion. At magic kingdom she floats up and down. And you forgot to mention the eyes right after the stair case scene at magic kingdom. Those eyes turn into the eye wall paper in the corridor of doors. And the stretching room scene is also slightly different. At Disneyland the hanging body scene lasts about eight seconds when at magic kingdom it only lasts about three seconds. You also forgot to mention the little madam leota room present in magic kingdom right after the hitchhiking ghosts. At Disneyland she is present on the escalator. The trees in the graveyard scene at Disneyland have faces. At magic kingdom they do not. Great video by the way man!
