In our fifth installment of "Keep Epcot Weird" we'll be racing along with Test Track, a slot car attraction that can still be found at Epcot. The current version is an updated reskin of the original attraction that reuses the same ride system. So today, we'll be seeing what the old version looked like and how they changed it.

The original scared me a lot as a little kid... yet it was my favorite in the park. I remember being so heartbroken visiting Epcot in 2014, not knowing about the revamp, and seeing the ride no longer a terrifying test dummy torture chamber.

You forgot to mention the gag right before you do the speed test. Originally you would see a moving and crashing into a wall so when your car speeds up it looks like you're also gonna hit the wall until the door opens at the last second. Then later the car just stayed static and not crashing into the wall. Kinda ruined the effect. Now in the new version it doesn't really make sense why you're speeding up at a wall.

I miss the original version so much! I loved all the quirks and random details inside the ride. This scared me so much as a kid since I didn’t understand test dummies and why everything was so loud and the cars flying overhead! But looking back on it I’m so nostalgic for the yellow and black color scheme, and the cold and warm testing. The new test track just isn’t the same 😢

Heh man do I miss old test track! I grew up with that attraction and thought it was fun and exciting! The newest one i think is ok. Sometimes the build the car PreShow area can sometimes break down and some of the future elements of the ride i find ok. I agree to the three chambers now have a lack of character, those rooms were fun to go in to, even that cold one to go into for a hot day in Epcot. I can’t wait to see more of these! Their fun to watch!

Crazy Hannah Creations I totally agree, I grew up with the old version and while I get the appeal of the cosmetic changes and re-theming, the old queue and preshow definitely got me more ramped up for the ride than the new one. It just feels like the new version lost the heart the original one had.

Also, I wondered if the design of the car affected ride experience at all, so I did a smidge of investigation and found a little subreddit where some physicist rode the ride (if I remember correctly) 15 times with different designs. Basically his conclusion was "if it does, which isn't to say it doesn't, I didn't notice."

You clearly know what you're doing, so I feel weird making a suggestion. But I'd love to see you cover Magic Journeys as extensively as this. Almost no one talks about it, but after watching a "ride through" of it I quickly became obsessed. It's odd and scary and ...weird in the best way. I can't imagine how the average person would have responded to it. Fascinating stuff. This video was super dope btw, as always.

I just went back to EPCOT in 2023 and rode the new Test Track. I only remember how much I loved the old one, so I really wanted to like it again. Unfortunately, it was a big let down. I agree with everything in this video. It was still sorta fun, but nothing close to the 1st one. The sad thing is they could have done something so much better in place of the barrier test. Like they could have used effects to make it look like there was no door at all, sort of like when the lift doors open on the Tower of Terror and all you can see is lights as if you're going into another dimension. I mean you can see exactly where the doors are going to open, imagine how good an effect it would be if you couldn't tell where they were.

World of Motion was a high-quality dark ride that was similar to Spaceship Earth, but was focused on the history of human transportation instead of the history of human communication. World of Motion also had a slightly more light-heated tone than Spaceship Earth as demonstrated by its humorous depiction of the first traffic jam. I prefer dark rides over thrill rides, but I also like Test Track. I prefer the more detailed and true to real life interior of the original version of Test Track, but I prefer the cleaner, less garish exterior of the current version of Test Track. I wish that the software that allows you to design a mock car in the queue would actually give you tips and instructions so that you would be able to design the best car possible without having to make it up as you go and learn through trial and error.

Heh, I immediately recognized Larry's voice actor as Lorenzo Music. (12:44) Anyways, great video, and you are absolutely right about the current version being boring and forgettable. The old version was so much more fun and exciting; it had quirks and character. It almost reflects GM's decline from excitement to existence. I remember making it a point to ride the old one whenever I was at Epcot, but I practically never ride the new one. (Heck, I've wondered if there'd be an even better attraction if Toyota or Honda were to sponsor the motion pavilion instead.)

As a lifelong Disney fan who traveled there every 2-3yrs, I have to say that not all the changes are good. Some yes...like the Universe of Energy ride. I was there when they opened Epcot in 1982. I first went to MK in 1973 as a 3 yr old. I agree that updates must be done to rides. More often than not though, I see people disappointed w/much of what they do. Horizons was an awesome ride & everyone I’ve talked to says that ride should’ve been kept. I wish Disney would label certain attractions as, “classic” & keep the rides maintained, but not so drastically changed. Case in point? The original Imagination ride. It was a colorful fun feel good ride that got turned into a stupid, much shorter, & pointless ride. I really hope test track doesn’t change too much!

Love your videos. Always great to have a little bit of a sense of humor in these Disney videos, a lot of Disney content creators lack that, and you do it well. I like the newer version's aesthetic a whole lot more than the old one. A warehouse didn't feel very Epcot to me, and certainly not very Future World esque. However, with the park now becoming EPCOT and the new World Discovery replacing Future World, I suppose anything goes. I do hope that someday we get a little better theming in there, but if we are going to get a new attraction or an update to one, we all know it needs to be Imagination. But TT is under refurbishment once again, so if I had to wager, I'd say we will see this current version for probably another decade or so.

If Disney wants to update Test Track they should add people like Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. The new ride is missing the personal touch and character of the old ride and the addition of a charismatic set of hosts like that would really complete the ride.

I never understood why people defend the new Test Track as an upgrade because the old version was "dated". The old version made you consider all the aspects that went into designing vehicles and the tests are still being done. Sure, cars are now designed with computers more than ever, but it doesn't mean that tests are irrelevant.

I have mixed feelings about both versions of Test Track. The original had way more charm and character, but it was woefully dated, even when it opened. Showing what new tests that cars had to go through would’ve been difficult to maintain. The new one I feel makes more sense in the context of Epcot Center. It’s a more active experience, which while I think is unnecessary in most places, feels more at home in Epcot. It just feels really bland at moments. If I had it my way, I’d keep the interactive features, give more explanations on why you’re working on it, rotate real, modern testing equipment in the queue over time, and keep the industrial aesthetic (maybe keep it a little quieter tho)

Park Ride History for the next video, do another episode of keep Epcot weird. Because this idea is a really good one that you should do, for the next episode of keep Epcot weird. It should be about the Epcot stage show called The Magical World of Barbie, because Mattel and Disney joined forces and created a stage show about Barbie. And they originally did the show at Epcot, and it lasted for only 2 years, from 1994 to1995. The show was located on the corner of World Showcase, and the show was supposed to represent Barbie having fashion designs inspired by countries around the world. However the show itself lead in to mix reviews, from both Barbie fans, kids and the critics. The Barbie fans and the kids really love the show a lot, and thought they should go back to Epcot to watch the show. And there would be meet and greets of Barbie Ken and Skipper. That was the reason why the fans and kids wanted to go to Epcot. But the critics and some people have complained that Barbie doesn't belong at Epcot, and that her show should move to what was called at the time Disney MGM Studios now called Disney's Hollywood Studios. So I believe the criticism and the complaints about that show really took a toll and force Disney and Mattel to pull out the magical world of Barbie show away from Epcot. So obviously you need to talk about the magical world of Barbie for the next episode of keep Epcot weird oh, I really like to see the magical world of Barbie show to be mentioned as the next episode of keep Epcot weird

I'm not a fan of the new Test Track. I hit speeds higher than the "best" build on the interstate driving down to the park.

It truly was, so much more immersive and practical, the new one is just, eeeh, not up to par with the rest of Disney’s theming and story telling

I thought they would have updated it to the CARS version they have in Disneyland by now.

Park Ride History at first I was thinking if you really miss the original version of test track, and I guess I was right. I'm sure that some others miss the original two, but there are some or should I say a lot who don't miss the original. Because if those people are hardcore Epcot fans, and believe of what Epcot is supposed to be. Of course they already know that Epcot was originally meant to be a real working Community City, originally Vision by Walt Disney himself. But years later and after when Walt's brother royal Disney died in the next week after Walt Disney World open, I mean without Walt and without Roy. Disney would not do a Epcot City without the both of them. But anyway, when Disney was really thinking about Epcot, and they really had experiences of what they've done for Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom, and they've created a lot of technology and used some other Technologies all together at both Disneyland and even Walt Disney World. They decided that the Epcot project would be a theme park, and more like a World's Fair. and so when they were designing Epcot to be a theme park and World's Fair at the same time, they made it as a permanent World's Fair. And its purpose was to represent the future, and you have a lot of people and their Nations around the world to come together, and to believe that the future for people around the world can come together and get along. And of course as we all know, a lot of the hardcore Epcot fans Miss almost every Epcot attraction that used to be there. Like the original journey into imagination, Horizons, some might have missed wonders of life even though some people didn't like that Pavilion. People also miss the living Seas the original attraction and Pavilion with sea base Alpha, and now they already miss Universe of energy. Communicore and innoventions could be possible Pavilions and distractions that some hardcore Epcot fans Miss as well. And like what you said the original test track was definitely weird, and when I looked at almost a lot of videos of the original Epcot on KZbin. I thought that the original test track was really weird and really didn't fit for future world of Epcot, and the original test track did not look like the future and even a futuristic attraction for a permanent World's Fair. So at first when I was hoping to visit Walt Disney World, my plans were the Magic Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios and of course Epcot. and whatsoever I have no interest for Disney's Animal Kingdom, unless if they might have a zootopia land if they're planning on it. Anyway when I hope to visit Epcot at first, I had no plans to try out test track from its original Style. But now with its new update, now I would like to try it out. Because when I saw the new version on KZbin I really love it a lot, and the new version of Epcot is better. Even though you and some other people will miss the original, but nonetheless not too many people miss the original. because I even remembered some people got tired of the original test track. But when they made an update for test track that I like way better like I said, The Inspirations for that ride came from not only Tron. But also a former Disney attraction called Magic Skyway sponsored by Ford Motor Company from the New York World's Fair, well only half of that original attraction. But they got more inspiration from the original and Old World of motion attraction and the post-show of the transportation Pavilion, where all of it used to be sponsored by General Motors. One of those Inspirations that they put on the new version of test track, was the digital automobile designs. because from the original world of motion Transportation Pavilion, there used to be a special interactive thing, where you can actually do some earlier digital car designs on an old-fashioned computer. and of course there would be automobile displays from GM in the post-show as well, so they got those two ideas and put them for the new version of test track. And I think Disney did a great job on that idea, just to represent what the attraction was originally. But to represent the future of automobiles, with no sponsor from General Motors but a sponsor from Chevrolet. I really love the new version of test track, and I can hardly wait to experience it very soon or some day. When I visit Walt Disney World

I never got to ride the original test track, only the new one. From all the videos on the ride and queue of the old version I don't like the industrial and mechanical feel personally, it looks tacky, cheap and now especially outdated. The new version has the aesthetic that I think Epcot needs, futuristic designs like Shanghai's tomorrowland and other forward thinking designs. However the ride lacks the "realism" of the original, the old actually making you feel like you were on a test track while the new one doesn't even feel like a simulation and just a black box with tron aesthetics which is now 10 years old. If they could combine the best of both worlds for the next Test track update I think that would be amazing.
