Whenever I want to get someone to watch Parks and Rec (because it's one of the best shows ever made), I tell them that they just have to suffer through season 1 before it gets really good. It's mostly because S1 Leslie is basically what right-wing morons think feminists are like - incapable, always playing a victim etc. S2+ Leslie is what most feminists are actually like: strong, powerful, always fighting for the spot their abilities qualify them for in a system that tries to hold them down. What makes it so realistic is that while the system holds them down, the actual people, the individuals that exist aren't sexist. That distinction is crucial.

her funny character is the funny character i've been waiting for. she reminds me so much of me and other people i have worked with. i used to monitor calls of this one young woman so none of the other supervisors could, and she would literally put on a show for me. I would just let her know that i was about to monitor her and she would start fucking with customers. she was never rude, but it was very much like april ludgate. and this was back in 1998 or 1999. i even recorded it and took it home.

When Aubrey said "I don't remember any of that" she was both being funny for effect and being 100% real in what she said. She said in interviews that that's not how it really came about. From 0:36-0:50 Schur is downright lying. At the meeting, Aubrey and Daniels had a whole conversation about life and life after death and Schur wasn't involved just listening from the side. You can often tell in interviews that Schur never really got April, it was Daniels who did. Schur often speaks of April in terms of a black and white outline (like, "being scary, being April"). It speaks to the fact that it was Daniels who expressed liking Aubrey Plaza's pitch of the character back when the show was in development. Schur probably disliked that a mostly unknown, funny young woman at the time had a better idea for the character than his dumb-blonde assistant idea. Daniels gave Plaza credit for pitching and improvising things that contributed to the character in the story, while Schur never did and often takes credit for what she pitched, including April and Andy being together (which was Plaza's idea toward the end of season 1). He promotes his mythology narrative of the initial meeting ("omg she seemed so weird and I was so uncomfortable I wrote the role for her"), when in reality, as Plaza and Daniels said, the original idea for the character was a dumb blond assistant but in the meeting Plaza suggested that a more interesting character that would yield a better dynamic with Amy's character was the opposite: a smart intern who was there for college credit and didn't really care about the job. Daniels liked it and created April for the pilot. Aubrey based the character's personality largely on her younger sister. I love how he, who isn't friends with Aubrey and doesn't really know her personally, has the audacity to claim from his brief meeting with her that she's similar to April, when people who actually know Aubrey, like Amy Poehler and Chris Pratt, have said that in reality and personal relations Aubrey isn't like April at all.
