Nice one, one thing I noticed is he didn't explain that the removal of the cassette is actually a lot more difficult than it appears here (pre-loosened) due to needing to apply opposite rotational force on the sprocket whilst loosening lockring, ideally with a chain whip, an old chain or other tool.

Should have headed over to the Spinergy booth to see glass spokes, well polymer fibers in glass phase. They also erroneously claim they don't stretch, but clearly they do, as you say stretch is needed to tension a wheel. Solid silica glass would make a poor spoke as any bending would easily break it, but it's still an elastic material. Could use it as fibers, but there are better choices, such as Spinergy's.
@parktool5 жыл бұрын
We have a few sets of Spinergy wheels here actually. Pretty nifty.

Spokes can break easily if a person weights in at 185 kg but the specification says 130 kg maximum. However, even a comparable light person can break them if unevenly or unadequately tensioned. +what also floats in water ? -small stones ?

I am 6'5" and 300 lbs. I break spokes all the time. Using your 3 strikes rule I would be rebuilding my wheel ever 6 months. Other than losing weight is there anything I should do to lessen the spoke breakage? Are there better brands of spokes?
@parktool4 жыл бұрын
There are different grades of spokes that may help you out. A good builder with a proper rim and hub will be able to build you a long lasting wheel. A robust rim will help the spokes out quite a bit.

What type of spoke to buy? Aluminum, steel? What are the good brands? How many sizes there are? MTB bikes use the same spokes as track bikes? Where is a good place to buy spokes?
@parktool5 жыл бұрын
Replace a spoke with the same as what you removed. If your wheels have Aluminum spokes replace with aluminum. If you have Steel replace with steel. There are hundreds of sizes, shapes and colors to pick from. the best thing to do is find out what yo had and replace it with the same length, shape, size and material. There are many spoke manufacturers. The big ones that provide spokes to many wheel builders are going to be DT-Swiss, Sapim, Wheelsmith, Alpina and Pillar. These are all reputable brands. Hope this helps!

Hi, how do I know if my spokes are made of aluminum or steel? Thanks Parktool, you are the best.
@parktool5 жыл бұрын
Get out the magnet. If it has any pull at all it is a steel spoke. Some have a very small amount of pull so be careful to notice this. You can also typically tell by the size of the smoke. Most Alu spokes are 3mm or larger in diameter.
