I would have to tie my hands to not screw on a cheap Dicta single speed freewheel, swap some spacers on the axle. I'd then re dish the wheel. Problem is the nipples might not even turn on something that old and launch a new adventure. Rebuild of the wheel! No pie plate for me!

Hello. Watching this a question came to me. Is there was way, or a formula where without having to use a chain tensioner, you can, by knowing the length of the chainstay (bb center to rear axle centre), and the sproket/ chain ring size you have...to know which rear sprocket size to keep your chain taught? The chainstay length is x. My single front chainwheel is so many teeth. Your only option is a 17 tooth rear cog. (for example). (Obviously this bike doesn't have horizontal dropouts, other wise the question would be pointless)

Got any tips on which (partial) cassettes will fit on a Hope SS/Trials hub? I know they have a Shimano HG freehub but narrower than normal, so you have to remove sprockets from a modern HG cassette to fit it on. Unfortunately I don't have loads of cassettes to try out, let alone compatible shifters, and they're not exactly plentiful in the UK at the moment either! So I need to know what I'm ordering/buying will work (or can be made to work) without needing a machine shop...

@613.Rooster3 жыл бұрын
Never open it! But if you must,no grease. Just oil. Grease will cause sticky pawls and goast peddling. Be prepared with small tweezers and magnetic tip tools. But you know what? Don't open it. Clean it well before flushing either solvent or oil so that dirt and grit don't get drawn in with the flushing. Let it drain as Calvin did.
@ollieb98753 жыл бұрын
I opened it. 😱😂 I thought that 2 pin ring thing was how to get the cassette off. Not my bike. Bearings *everywhere!* I had some more luckily but it took 3 attempts and a couple of hours to get it back together 🙃 works nice for her now 👍😀
@type173 жыл бұрын
If you must open it, you can use a minimal amount of grease to stick the bearings in place on the races - just a tiny smear in the shiny line/centre of the race. If you're worried about sticky pawls, you can then add some lube after assembly, to dissolve the grease, but it's not necessary if you've used minimal grease.
@PhoenixT19533 жыл бұрын
Ive restored more vintage bikes than I can even keep track of and every single one of them that has freewheels Ive rebuilt the freewheel and packed the bearings and pawls with grease and Ive never once had an issue with sticking pawls or ghost pedaling even years afterwards

The condescending tone when working on bikes always makes me chuckle. Freewheels. Paws springs and bearings are irreplaceable. Grease is consumable and that rusted piece needs some. If confident you won't loose any bearings smaller than .177, go for it. Look for videos regreasing a flywheel, and you can dramatically quiet down their operation.

As a rule of thump: replace the inner tube too, if you are replacing the tyre. And fit a _good_ wide rimtape, so that the inner tube doesn't touch the rim at all. But, referring to the shortage of spareparts in the moment, there might be reasons to check, if the inner tube can be used again.
