Thanks for the video. It's been a while since I replaced a t-belt (had a 94 Tracker) and I was able to bring it all back in a few minutes watching your video. Keep them coming! I just picked up an 86 Sammi and I'm sure I will need the memory refreshers. Hooah!👍

On an 8v 1.3 Samurai, with both timing marks up at their marks, the distributor should point at the #4 cylinder not #1. The belt instructions are for timing the cam not the distributor.

Noticed in the video that once the rotor was pointed at #1 that the cam timing mark on the pulley was at the bottom? I'm confused.

Yes. When the cam and crank timing marks both are aligned UP that is actually TDC on the #4 cylinder.

Spark plug tube ? They probably need to be replaced anyway. Ampro spark plug tubes are the best tubes. They also have an inexpensive tube installer, way cheaper than Snap-on. Always make sure the tube retainers are torqued properly. I once blew them right out of the engine, dented my hood! Boy, was I embarrassed!

hi….good quality video, thanks for the help! broke a belt here. only thing I was confused by was when you were trying to find tdc compression stroke on #1. you didn't have the belt on yet, so the camshaft was not turning and was at a random position. Seems like depending on where the camshaft was at the time..you would either never be able to get compression or always get compression on the upstroke of #1 piston. anyway I have lined up the crank marks and the cam marks and installed the belt. ,so will know soon if it starts..

This video is very misleading. It is really cylinder no 4 that you are trying to find TDC for during the compression stroke. No 1 cylinder is just used as a stand in because it also happens to be at TDC when No. 4 is. It is just that No1 is closer to you when you turn over the crankshaft from the front and you can use your finger in the spark plug hole to feel the air blowing out and sucking back in as you go over and back TDC. You can't reach no 4 and turn the crank shaft at the same time and be able to see the alignment mark on the crank shaft toothed pulley. That is why the rotor will point at the spark plug for cyl. No. 4 when the synchronization marks are all lined up. All you really need to do is put the synchronization mark on the cam shaft pulley and the synchronization mark on the crank shaft pulley where they are supposed to be and you will be all lined up with cyl. no. 4 at TDC on the compression stroke. No need for doggy toy, etc. You don't even need to take out any plugs, etc.

Correct if ur cam and crank gears or aligned properly and vehical is mechanically timed correctly then distributor rotor should be pointing to number 4 at tdc one of the cHilton or Haines manuals is wrong....I had the wrong book it sucked ...the factory suzuki repair manual is the only manual i use its right all the time

hey since ur belt is off and cam is aligned every turn is a compression stoke since ur valves isn't working so all u have to do is align marks cause there is no exhaust stroke at this point correct?

yes on the broken belt, this can cause considerable damage to the pistons and top end. i change mine every 60k.the time for the belt to break down is due to the weather conditions, but every 4yrs is safe. im slow and it took me under 2 hrs.i dont remove the radiator , just protect it with some cardboard

Ernest I It can't hurt anything on an '88 Samauri. It is a non-interference engine. Please folks-just don't say anything if you don't know what you are talking about.

On the Samurai 1.3L it doesn't hurt anything if you break a belt.
