Now I'm all excited to make my own. However, you left out the most important part that I was waiting to see: the boring and broaching of the rifling spiral...

You're less likely to see any kind of warping in lathe operations. Milling cold rolled steel is another issue though. You can easily turn a thin piece of steel into a banana if you're not careful. Mainly, just make sure you take equal amounts off each side. If you hog a bunch off with a rougher, take it out of the vise and let it correct itself, then put it back in for your finishing operations.

This one shot quite well for a big bore. 1" at 100yrds. When I do this type of machining on barrels I prefer to use Krieger barrel blanks. The cryo their barrels which removes a lot of the stress in the steel. They don't seem to move around when machining like some other barrels I've used.

Thank you Gregg! That's funny, when I lived in Alaska I had a friend who used the term "skookum" all the time. Haven't heard it in over 10 years. The lug under the barrel is just a secondary recoil lug. On big bores it's handy to have that to help spread out the recoil in the stock.

@@MFKR696 honestly the old method is based on the technics of forging from a piece of metal to give rise to a cylinder, the interior of the barrel was worked according to its future use, either smooth or scratched interior, all of that manually, all tools are handcrafted and intended for strictly manual use,the best manufacturing methods are the oldest, especially the heat and protective treatment, but unfortunately to obtain a master weapon it takes a lot of time, and i tried all methods in my 21 years of gunsmithing

Steyr Mannlicher make a single piece barrel and bolt / magazine holder , on their standard bolt action rifles . Apparently this dramatically improves accuracy.

Boy would I love to send him a couple sets of my reamers to make some barrels like that. It would be worth the cost for me. He even milled in a threaded post for the 7 pound screw at the end of the forearm. Gosh I wish I could have him make me some barrels. I have the actions I have the stock blanks I have the reamers.

i am a machinist and a hex barrel would have made for faster blending but been about the same everywhere else, also not many gunsmiths have mills with long enough travels to do a entire hex barrel

Did removing mass external materials release internal stress causing the barrel to bend? Did the rifling concentricity at both ends stay the same?

No noticeable affect on the bore. This was a Krieger barrel blank. They are properly stress relieved which makes them much easier to work with without ill affects. Doing the same thing with a hammer forged barrel would spell nightmares for the bore's concentricity.

I'm making an accessory barrel for my H&R, Handy Rifle and the skills I have will make mine look ..... NOTHING like what this guy does! The the most I'll drill the top for a scope rail and perhaps a dovetail or two for some iron sights if I can find some that are real simple to install and the barrel it now has is only set up for a scope anyway.

Extremely nice work for sure. I'm curious how much time was spent getting every single dimension laid out on paper or CAD, double then triple checking those for any dimensional errors before you hit the start switch for the first time. :-) Even at that it's all to easy to make a cutting mistake if your not 100% sure of every move.

@@mnrcustomllc8253 I didn't see any video angles taken high enough to see if you have dro's on your lathe and mill or not. If not then doing the job with the dials and compensating for backlash would make it about 10 times harder. Yes it can be done just like you showed, but I think it takes a special mind set and machinist to do it as well as you have. While I've got the equipment to duplicate something like this I wouldn't bet a dime on me doing so without a fatal mistake for the barrel. This is a whole lot tougher to do than it looks. Unfortunately and except for a very few with well known names, highly skilled custom gunsmiths aren't as appreciated or as well rewarded as they should be.

Getting the dovetail fit right is crucial, how is that achieved?

I get close by measuring the sight. The dovetail is cut slightly wider on one side of the barrel. Then by trying the sight after each .001 cut I keep checking to see when the sight starts into the dovetail.

Getting old and grumpy. Have never understood why people clamp off to one side of a Vice. Can be done but the other side needs to be Blocked otherwise the jaws Spring. Try clamping on one side and running an Indicator along the movable jaw. The Boss would have Clocked me for being such a dumb .... Old School
