I also think that natural wood perches are quite pleasing to the eye and do not offend a human's sense of aesthetics... We use apple branches we have harvested ourselves knowing they had never been sprayed. Putting it all away because of "company coming" would be folly. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for some of our picture frames and lampshades: some deterrents are needed where the budgies are concerned and these are far less aesthetically pleasing... LOL!

The best toy for my grey out of all the expensive toys I have bought him is 3 tin lids from jars . drilled holes in the side of all 3 linked them together with a bit of chain ( a short piece so they don't hang themselves ) and a dog clip to hang it to the roof of their cage , it clangs like crazy and he loves it = cost next to nothing LOL also 6 playing cards with a hole punched in one corner hung on a carabiner ? clip once they wreck the cards just replace it with 6 more , very cheap and keeps them busy .

Also I made a diy 'natural branch' it was textured, had varieying diamiter and cost me virtually nothing, I got a boring(but thick) wooden dowel perch It took ALOT or time though, it was tedious and I was lucky to get a solid and secure wooden dowel, but I recommend it for a project- just stay safe and make sure it's safe

Hi, love your videos and can't get enough of them. We have a sun conure, she's 2. But we just purchased an African grey. She is about 7-8 weeks old. We will not get her until she is on pellets. Our breeder doesn't like her birds to leave until they are completely ready. I would appreciate any suggestions for me to socialize my conure and African together. They absolutely will have separate cages. My conure is flight trained and I intend to do this with the African as well. Thanks Vicky

Matthew Williams If you do get one, don’t have them in the same cage. You should take little steps and let them get to know each other, first they should be in different rooms but able to hear each other talking. The birds cage should be their own safe place and shouldn’t have another stranger bird in it.

This was good. Especially, the comment about manzanita, since I was seriously considering that wood for a perch. What would have been helpful is to show the base of the perch. It was referenced, but not actually show in the video.
@wingsNpaws9 жыл бұрын
Jeff Haynes Hi Jeff, I have a couple other videos where the base was shown but it pretty much was a heavy duty wooden cutting board. If you want an easy clean-up, you could also get melamine from a hardware store. Super cheap and easy to use (they'll usually even cut it to size if you ask them). In addition, if you can't find any natural branches, try using ribbonwood. IMO it looks better than manzanita and offers a better perching surface that isn't so slippery.
@jeffhaynes80569 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks so much for the reply and additional information. I'll see if I can find a source for ribbonwood. I had never heard of it before. I'll also see if I can find your other videos that show the base for reference.

hey dude I am a big fan of yours and I really like Smoky I have two cockatiels and I am trying to find a good branch of wood in their cage would you give me some tips??
@wingsNpaws9 жыл бұрын
Abdel Rahman Hassan I would recommend you try to find natural (bird-safe) branches if you can. Just be sure to check to make sure the branch is a type that isn't harmful to parrots and hasn't been sprayed with pesticide. I try to find branches where my bird can get a firm grip and be able to hang from it without slipping. If you can't find them, try searching amazon for bottlebrush perches, I haven't used them but hear good things about them.

So with all her primary wings she could "get spooked" and take flight. How have you prepared to avoid this terrible possibility?
@wingsNpaws8 жыл бұрын
Camber Hill That's an excellent question, so I'll take some time to explain it. A HUGE misconception that a lot of people have about flighted parrots is that when spooked, they will fly straight into a wall/window/mirror. To really understand how this works, imagine the last time a wild bird flew into your house. This wild bird, when spooked in the wild, would never fly and crash straight into a tree stump (unless if its a fledgling). However, when this same bird flies into a home and can't find its way out, it crashes repeatedly into the walls/windows/mirrors. I used to ponder why such a master flier would not have any common sense about flying straight into a wall! Well, if you're still with me, it turns out that birds need to be taught what walls, windows, and mirrors are. All three are unnatural for them and when you first flight train a bird, you'll probably notice they'll nearly touch the roof and give a look like they're thinking 'What's this thing above me?" So, I begin by walking my bird around the house and asking her to tap on the glass/window/walls. With her in the room, I use masking tape to tape a large "X" across the window. However, even with all of this, the chances are, she'll probably do some exploratory flights once she builds up enough confidence and crash. Since I've been practicing in a small room, she can't really build up enough speed to injure herself and QUICKLY learn that these should be avoided. I teach her alternative landing spots by targeting her to land on different places around the room. Once these skills are developed, a flighted bird that is well trained will NEVER crash into a wall, window, or mirror again. Smokey has spooked on numerous occasions, but she simply just circles the room and flies back to me or she finds an alternative landing spot, just like how a wild bird knows not to fly straight into a tree trunk! I have found from past experience that when a clipped bird spooks, he always ends up crashing on the floor. A flighted bird (who has been appropriately trained) will never have that problem. Hope this answers your question!

Hi..i have a question.. hope you can help.. i just got an African Grey ,and the first 2 weeks she was talking a lot and learning new words but then i noticed that she stopped talking after my husband place a big thick natural tree branch he found while at work it had a big whole inside like if it was some creatures home ,a bird or squirl... she started chewing on it and every day she cleans it out and shes now inside "the nest" all the time..and she looks very confy .but she stopped talking.. I also have a canary at home that sings all day.. I'm just worried if she stopped talking because of the trunk/branch or because of my other bird.. please help.. .
@fabulously6956 жыл бұрын
Juan Luqueno she's feeling very hormonal right now. Treat her as you normally would. If she wants to stay in her nest, let her, if she lays infertile eggs, DO NOT remove them. Let her sit on them for about a month for her to get it out of her system. African greys are wild animals, they need to do certain things. Try offering her food in the nest and put a calcium supplement in her water. If she gets aggressive at you being in her space, then just back off. If she looses interest in the branch for a few hours, take the opportunity to remove it and get rid of it

hi i need ur help please my parrot always pooping and once he touch the ground he poop! what can i do with him
@wingsNpaws9 жыл бұрын
al67lop Hi, remember that he's a bird and birds will poop. Usually, they will poop when you place them on the ground because most parrots don't feel safe on the ground. Because of this, they will want to be ready to take off (fly) upwards onto a higher surface when you place them on the ground. In order to be ready to take flight, they will want to defecate to get rid of any unnecessary weight on them. From what it sounds, there's nothing your bird is doing wrong. I would approach this by training your bird to poop everytime you place hm on the ground. SInce he's already doing this, it should be easy. Then, when you pick him back up, he's less likely to poop on you.
