I think a sleep cage is a great idea if your bird cannot get the proper sleep in the day cage. Great topic!

Originally I thought of a sleeper cage for Mushu, but now I just go in my bedroom early - around 7:00 so he can sleep.

I have massive cages for my birds (2 gcc, IRN and Quaker) and a whole spare bedroom for them called "The Bird Room" with play gyms, climbing nets etc. I have cats so I do have to keep them separate at all times. My birds get let out of their cages for several hours each day and they can go in and out of their cages as they please. I spend quite a bit of time in the bird room but also in my room (disabled and sick). I have multiple cameras set up in the bird room so I can supervise them when I am not in there. I take 1-2 birds out of the room to interact with them one on one in my bedroom by putting them into a carrier and bringing them to my room or outside for some sunlight. My cats get kicked out of my room when I have my birds in there. I don't see how a sleeper cage would fit into this routine so I haven't tried. So glad I don't need to worry about one!

Sounds like you have an awesome set up and take lots of steps to keep them safe and happy!

@ it is a lot of work but they are worth it and my partner/carer helps. ❤️ They associate the carrier with being outside in sunshine or coming to my room for one on one time. So when vet time comes, there is no struggling to get them in! 🤣

My birds cages are in the living room. When it is time for them to go to sleep, I watch TV or go to bed in my room where they won't be disturbed. Luckily I have a bathroom connected to my room. What we do for our birds! LOL! 😊

I have a sleeping cage for my macaw and it’s been great. He has his own bedroom with his sleeping cage in it and his sleeping cage is pretty big, close to the size of his day cage. The bedroom has roller shades, to make sure he doesn’t wake up super early in the summer. He also have a kids night light so he can see a little bit at night and doesn’t hurt himself because he can’t see anything. His day cage is in the living room and the living room is very open with lots of windows. Also we have two cats that are awake all night playing and there is no way he would get his 12 hours of proper sleep in the living room.

We only have one cage, and it's in our (rather large) living room. I wouldn't want my birds to venture into the rest of the apartment, because the doorways may appear as a bit of a maze to them, with fairly tight spaces to make aerial turns. The birdies are happy to stay in the living room and often in, on or fairly close to the cage (except for when they do their daily fly-arounds in the room). We do cover up the cage at night. Since we usually are fairly quiet after the birdy bedtime, it's really rare for them to get spooked.

I like the idea of sleeper cages - would an 18 x 18 x 18 cage be big enough for a cockatiel? I was thinking of putting his main cage in my bedroom and the sleeper cage in my closet, so it's nice and dark. Plus a little white noise machine to muffle any sounds that could cause a fright
@TheParrotTeacherАй бұрын
I would not recommend a closet for it! Id also consider something a tiny bit bigger for it!
@carina9629Ай бұрын
@@TheParrotTeacher oh NOT the closet! May I ask why? I always thought birds needs dark, quiet, places and I have a large walk in closet that is guaranteed to be dark and quiet (but with cockatiels and night frights, they need some sort of soother like a nightlight or white noise) - but I want to do the right thing and make sure my bird is super comfy since sleep is roughly 50% of their days, haha

I let my GCC choose when and were she wants to sleep and for the past two years she sleeps on a picture frame hung high near the ceiling in the living room. I lower the lights but don't change my behavior except for watching TV in the bedroom. She's roosting by sunset, way too early for me, but she has learned to ignore all the noise until sunrise. The jungle is noisy at night and they have evolved to ignore everything that is not an immediate threat IMO. She has never been spooked by noise or movement. I have three cats that play all night but Sunny ignores all of it. Except for an initial contact call she will wait quietly for me to wake up around sunrise. Each situation is different but these little parrots will adjust quickly to many different noises at night if acclimated slowly and consistently allowing for a stress free evening and morning for me ☺️

It is very true that each situation is different and they can adapt to many noises and low light!

I'm in a very small house:( I have my cage setup in my bedroom. I like to watch tv and decompress for 2-3 hours while in bed before I go to sleep. I go to sleep around 9-11 pm and wake up/get up around 7:30-9am. My partner leaves at 5am every day. If I put my cage in the living room, my bird will be woken up when my partner leaves no matter what. Where should I put my cage?? I know my bird won’t get enough sleep while in my bedroom. Could possibly get enough sleep in the living room but will be on a different schedule than me. Any suggestions??:) Thank you!

I recommend trying to aclimize your bird to your morning and evening routines. They become less sensitive to noise if it's relatively consistent every morning and every evening. GCCs are hungry in the morning so maybe your partner can leave him some breakfast at 5 am. He might scream at first but if you consistently wake at 7 and give him attention he will learn the routine and settle down. These birds are smart and resilient and will adjust to your routine, which in the long run will strengthen the relationship. Good luck 🍀
