Schwinn Cotton Picker Krate: The Cotton Picker was only made in 1970 and 1971 making it one of the harder to find of the six colors.. Imagine walking into the Schwinn dealer as a kid and picking between orange, yellow, candy apple red or white. Most kids would pick one of the flashy colors. This 1970 Schwinn Cotton Picker was restored several years ago as a show bike and featured in several car shows and vintage bike events, the bike was beautifully restored using original and reproduction parts with Schwinn exact color matching paint along with Genuine silk screened chain guard logo as originally done by Schwinn. The original chrome was re-chromed including the handle bar, quill stem, wheels, fenders and the crank set and Mag Sprocket. The Seat, and sissy bar shocks are reproduction replacements. Thanks for watching

Used to build ‘ stretched ‘ sting ray bikes, 20” wheels on 24” frame. A friend and I both had them, then another guy in our neighborhood got a brand new ‘ pea picker ‘ which he still has over 50 years later. He was looking for someone to ride with on the ‘ trails ‘ by the river. We didn’t keep them in our bedrooms wrapped in plastic, we took them out and rode them hard. Stingray bikes with tall sissy bars riding on the trails, what in the world is a mountain bike? In the later 70s I got the notion to build a stretched ‘ Krate ‘ bike, I bought a nice Apple Krate for $70 and rode it around my neighborhood, took it home and disassembled it. Then got busy with other things. Some time later I couldn’t find my parts, it seems some of my brothers punk friends took all my karate parts. Never did build it.

Very cool, great memories, $70 Apple Krate was probably the going price in the 70's, now days they go form much more. There is a guy on KZbin that build Krates with 24" frames, they look super cool. Thanks for sharing👍👍🔧🔧

Thanks! They are super cool up close, they are heavy bikes but ride super smooth. I took it to the local bike shop to show my buddy, when I rolled it in, the customers on the sales floor loved it and mentioned they had never seen one in person, the young mechanics marveled at the old school stick shift and springer fork, I did get all 6 colors and will do a video at some point. Thanks for stopping by😏👍🚲

Very nice example fo this model, looks like a very detailed restoration, others have had the same experience after rechroming the Mag Sprocket and as you did went back to a clean original chrome option, nice job and great collection, looks like a Schwinn Dealer sales floor of the early 70's. I look forward to the Apple Krate and Lemon Peeler out of the box videos.

I have a brand new 1970 Cotton Picker 5 spd. that has never been ridden. Over the years when I had to move it I carried it and it has only rolled on carpet. It still has paper tags hanging on it . It has the headlight, triple horn, speedometer, streamers, tool bag, and the base ball bat holder is still in the original box . Around 20 years ago the tires wouldnt hold air so I replaced the inner tubes other than that its as it was in the bike shop 51 years ago. Ive never ridden one but would like to someday. As a kid I made my bike from a J.C. Higgins frame.

I remember when I was about eight years old and I had seen my first one. A little boy drove up on his when Stingray squealed his tires and threw it on the ground and hopped off. It was black with a black banana seat. I fell in love with that bike the first day I saw it. I wanted so much to ride his bike but I was too scared to ask. I've never had one when I was young. Now I'm 56 and I just got done putting it together yesterday. All the parts came in from eBay and I put my bike together and I can't wait to go riding. I can't write it in my neighborhood where I moved to because I will get robbed. Or someone will shoot me and steal it from me. There are drive-by shootings here all the time. I lived here for the last two years I can't afford to move anywhere else so I'm stuck in this war zone. But the bike makes me happy

Great memories of your first time seeing a Schwinn Sting-Ray, I see that reaction from young people that see one of my 70's Muscle bikes in person up close and can't believe the stick shift, sissy bar banana seat, rear shocks. slick rear tire and Springer fork 😏🚲👨‍👩‍👦‍👦🏡 Hope you stay safe and can ride the Schwinn this summer...

When you see vintage Schwinn advertisements from the 50's, 60's and 70's they clearly weren't marketing towards minorities because every ad was the whitest, blondest kids getting their bikes on X-mas morning, but that could be said for most marketing campaigns back then, unless it was a malt liquor ad in the inner city..... and I think it's safe to say that no African American parents were buying this specific model for their kids.

@that70sschwinn 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Not sure if they are the actual pedals that came withe the bike, but they are certainly period correct, I have never seen any other 1968,1969 or 1970 original Krate example with a different pedal type, unless modified with a 1971 or later. In 1971 they introduced the small reflector as seen on the Grey Ghost, 1972 and 1973 the bigger amber reflectors were used. Here are a couple of link that shoe more detail, Thanks for watching 👍🔧🚲 picclick.com/Schwinn-Bicycle-1968-1970-Bow-Pedals-NOS-Krate-362300220893.html bikehistory.org/parts/pedals/#del

@@that70sschwinn no 66 was small end cap. To early 67. Then later 67 68 69 even 70 have bip end caps. With a sort of arrow at each end on either side of the diamond patter that's on the 66 style. So definitely not correct for the bike. They are called Bow pedals. Then later in 70 they went with the squad pedals with the clear reflector on them for the early 70 models. Like a grey ghost. Definitely a beautiful bike. I'm just giving you a little Info on the pedals. See my schwinn collection on my KZbin channel. I've got 27+ years of collecting under my belt. You have some nice bikes.
