Steve, I actually fill these little 6oz bottles for my 5411 and my pink 5402A. I am in Canada and I go to home hardware and get a specific butane lighter refill kit. The butane canister actually has the perfect size spout on it to fit inside those small Coleman tanks and fills them. I find it’s not dangerous at all because the butane tank is pretty much the same size as the Coleman tanks so over filling is not possible and the butane works great in these stoves. Hope this helps.

Never seen these Coleman items, pretty cool I have been refilling my 1 # propane cans for 5-6 years. Very cost 💲 effective way to get more for your money. And a lot of people pitch the 1# canister’s so I collect them up and just keep filling them 😉🤗

@@Plain-Ole-Chuck yep, I purge mine. I usually fill them in the fall when temperatures are cooler. I know some say to put the 1# canister’s in freezer before filling them but I have never had too and never had a problem. I just weight my canister before and after

I have three cans: Two are full and the other one may be 2/3rds full. I tested the 2/3rds can with a backpacker stove kit. Worked fine. Can resealed after pulling out stove nozzle. Other cans shake like the propellant is in tact. I live in Alaska. I think they would need to be shipped ground to make it state side.

Yes somehow , on ebay people are shipping them or they get confiscated allong the way.

Well, if you are patient and you get out a bit at sales, you'll find one I come across them from time to time. I sent one to a KZbin friend in Hey. Discipleted the fuel valve up inside there and converted it to a canister style. Works out really well

As an engineer, I don't think it would be too hard for me (or any other mechanical engineer) to develop an adapter to refill the small bottles of fuel you desire. I am a Coleman collector and purchased that same lantern not knowing the fuel bottles were NLA. It was just a data point and a "shame on me". But really don't think it could be very hard to do that. I did purchase on epay an adapter that let me use the "don't throw away" fuel canisters on the lantern but I have not tried it yet. It is a VERY high quality adapter.

Please let me know how it goes , I tried the Butane and the tiny plastic smoke shop adapters yesterday and it was not good , It appears to have ruptured the Cans valve , it filled 2/3 however all the fuel leKed out , it would never seal back up sadly. Thank you Ben 😊

I have a 5121A, Made in Canada, nicely modified to fit 1 pound bottles. You should maybe check the law about filling one pound bottles. I know up here it is a big no-no, with a big fine. You may be OK in the US. Thank you for all the information, Steve. Stay safe and stay cool

Canada has many silly rules about gas appliances, so much so that Coleman set up a factory in Canada to produce models for the Canadian market that were never sold here in the states. Canadian Coleman gas products are completely different from USA products.

Read a comment below that forces me to interject. DO NOT TRY TO FILL THESE THIN WALL CANS WITH PROPANE! There is a reason propane cylinders are so heavy. Because of the much higher pressures, they need to be. It may be possible to fill one with propane in cool weather, but if you look at a propane pressure/temperature chart, you will immediately understand how this could be an initially perceived victory that end horribly when it gets warmer. DO YOUR HOMEWORK and don't just go with what some nutjob like me, or the guy who says, "This is awesome! Go for it dude!" on KZbin. But this nutjob did his homework. DO YOURS! Rant complete.

I Sent this stove to a friend , he changed the stoves valve seat so it now taked a bottle that can be purchased today , he did a nice job , I tried filling one of these old bottles with a filler kit for a pipe store. It does fill however maybe 1/4 of the way and it was messy . I do like the conversation he did , Mike did you see the Customer hose adapter video I posted , this is what I recommend, I will send you a link

@@doinsngoins Very nicely done. I like that. Kudos to the modman and you for keeping these gems alive and running. I did a poor job by not mentioning that I have no reservations, provided the seals are still functional, about refilling with butane or other modern camping gas mixes like iso and even 30/70 or if you're really careful and again, do the homework, filling an empty PROPANE cylinder with 70% butane then 30% propane then filling the originals with that or adapting directly to that. Those old cans were just beefier and dare I say better. I don't know what pressures those old stoves could physically handle, but certainly your mod is safe and effective. On a side note, I'm somewhat surprised that some offshore supplier hasn't cloned the original canisters for sale on Ebay or similar.
