You are kind of wrong on how hot a house fire can be. After 15 yrs on a local fire department I have seen a lot of gold and silver fully melted. I have seen rifle barrels melted. One thing we did learn about this subject is to keep it as much as possible off the ground, maybe 2 ft. A true fire safe is only good for 4 hours before it starts acting like a oven.
@2is1gold8 ай бұрын
Yeah, I could have elaborated on that. I think I have in the past. Worst case, though, the metal content is still there. I hadn’t heard 2’ before. I have a few about 6” off for venting with an added assumption that a basement is going to fill with water in a fire.

Once you have stood on high ground in Napa Valley overlooking entire subdivisions laid to waste can you understand the power of mother nature. Unfortunately I have had to insurance adjust home after home after home where every molecular mass on a piece of property was reduced to ash burnt 4x over. Time after time the same story was told, California National Guard knocked on our door, 'you have 60 seconds to grab whatever you can' and was whisked away in the back of a 6x6. I found this tip somewhere regarding extending the fire protection in your safe. Put in a can of water, whatever size you want, and cover the opening on top with painters tape. Water boils at 100 centigrade at seal level (212 F). If the temp in the safe hits that, the tape blows off from the boiling water and so you have a continuous mist of water vapor inside the safe. This will hold the internal temperature inside the safe steady until the water completely evaporates. Or so I am told. Comments welcome.

Nine years ago, my youngest son ran into our room at 2 in the morning and yelled the house was on fire, which it was. I quickly put on some jeans and boots to go outside and try to contain the fire in the roof of the garage with a garden hose. It was pointless. My oldest son was the smart one. He grabbed everyone's wallet and all the car keys on the way out. The house was destroyed mostly by heat, smoke, and water from the fire fighters. Only about 5% of the house was actually burned up. My large gun safe held up well, although it was not directly in the fire. The closest flame was about 2 feet away in the ceiling above the safe. I learned you can lose 30 years worth of stuff in 5 hours. We were all fine and had insurance to cover almost everything. Never thought something like that would ever happen to me.

My buddy lost his house to a fire 2 months ago. Manufactured home on his family ranch went up and within 15 minutes the entire structure was gone. He had several thousand dollars cash and his wife's family's jewelry buried 2 feet or so about 20-ish feet away, and lost everything in it. I'm not sure what the container was, but at 20ft away and 2ft under ground, who would've ever thought THAT wouldn't have been enough? Cash carbonized to essentially trash which isn't all that surprising (although yes, you can send the scraps to the bank and the Fed will replace some non-100 percentage), but the heirloom gold jewelry melted beyond recovery - that was shocking. No 2 house fires are the same and can absolutely burn hotter than people think. Don't assume that a fire-rated safe will protect everything in pristine condition... most especially especially if it's indoors, at a centralized location with lots of "fuel" around it that can prolong the blaze beyond the "1200 deg for 90-minutes" (or whatever the rating is). It might "survive" inside the safe but still be damaged beyond real value, or it might just get destroyed anyway. Cautionary tales are everywhere.

I made a point to stack 100s as a back up fund for any and all things. Always had it for whatever reason. I’ve recently added a fat stack of 20s as any cause of a banking crisis could require needs for smaller bills. What do we see now? “We only take 20s and under”. Well, I think I’m covered if I have the 20s and the 100s are for larger needs. I don’t see the need for a stockpile of smaller denominations after that. If u can’t break change, I simply grab more goods to even it out.
@syovar18 ай бұрын
@@JBeck556 Being in a unique position of the difficulty of cash being literally flown in and not trucked or shipped in, and also how banks and retail is in a crisis mode, I can professionally tell you to NOT stack 100s or 50s. $1,000 USD is more than enough - 32 20s, 30 10s, 12 5s. This mix will get under any radar and keep good relationships with any retail type. Everyone and his sister has 100s, and it's totally annoying. If you need more, you might be a bit paranoid.

It's a katana I had made. I have a very narrow window of expertise with swords. Kenjutsu/Kendo/Iaido basically.

Is that a Clayton & Crume Duffle? I'm tempted... Re the Pelican Cases, "Blue is for Bullion!"

Satchel and Page. Expensive , but they last forever.

I keep a fire-rated bag inside my fire-rated safe full of firearms. I store cash, a little gold and irreplaceable documents in there. In an easy location for the grab-n-go times.

My guy if we’re making videos and buying all this we are preppers 😂 it’s just levels to the madness and how deep we go down the rabbit hole.

Fair. But we ain't Doomsday Preppers. How about that?

I would include photo prints of your family. In case they get lost or separated from you then you will have a means of showing them to rescue workers and the like to help them be located.

That’s a good idea. I’m operating on the idea that I’d have my phone and/or access to a few accounts (and of course passport photos). Possible that isn’t enough.

@@2is1gold Phones can fall and incur damage that renders them useless. Also, batteries may fail. Small print photos (4"x6") make for a good backup.

Have you ever watched a prepper channel? I’m a surface dweller. 😄

@@2is1gold Yes, I have, and I consider myself a "prepper light". Not into the heavy duty version. Too old to give a damn if things get totally off the rails and too stubborn to just give up. lol

I have a plan sorta like that, but with a much smaller Pelican case.
