@whpriol1 Hi. It works both ways actually. If a key is still too high for you to sing with the capo off, you could put the capo on a high fret and sing lower, but the guitar would sound higher with the same chord shapes. You could of course transpose the chords, but then you are playing with different chord shapes, and you may not be able to play the same notes or picking pattern. If you want to sing a variety of songs, in the original chord shapes, you're going to need a capo some day!
@danmiller4725 Жыл бұрын
On Freewheelin Dylan admits on the record jacket he's interpreting a song others were singing in coffee houses. He says its hard to sing and he hasnt got it perfect yet but hopes to someday. Bruce Langhorn played guitar on the Freewheelin track.
@KingofRoath14 жыл бұрын
@Videowatcher76 A capo has got little to do with playing guitar. It's about vocals. And you'll find that all the best SINGER/songwriters use them, eg Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, etc, etc, and of course Bob himself. It's not about making it easier, it's about making it possible. The only reason Fred Sokolow isn't using a capo is that he's singing in a much lower key than Dylan's original. It's surprising how often I meet ignorant guitar snobs who don't know this basic fact.

@Videowatcher7613 жыл бұрын
@KingofRoath OK lets get something straight . I never meant to imply that I thought any performers who use a capo are cheaters. I have used them myself . What I meant was it the capo itself is a tool to use to play in diferent keys with out have to do major pattern changes to the chords . And as far as calling me ignorant , perhaps you are the one who is ignorant for misunderstanding what I was trying to convey .

Nice one Fred , thank you for posting and taking youre time for the lesson , but, I still reckon that it wasnt Dylan playing the guitar on the Freewheelin Album to Dont think twice, See below: Judge We now come to case seven-seven-o-o-two, the People vs. Bruce Langhorne, concerning the guitar playing on a certain track, ‘Don’t Think Twice’, recorded in Columbia Studio A, New York, in the afternoon of November 14, 1962. The People holds and has always held that the guitar which accompanies Bob Dylan’s singing on this track is played by Bruce Langhorne. Against this, Dr. Eyolf Østrem contends that the guitar is in fact played by someone entirely different. I ask District Attorney William Gully to step forward and present the evidence on behalf of the people. Gully Thank you, Your Honor. In addition to written evidence directly connected with the case, I will present testimonials from esteemed witnesses whose judgement is generally trusted and which should be weighed heavily. Let me start with Exhibit A: the album sleeve of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, where the song was first released. They were written by Nat Hentoff, a person very close to Dylan at the time. The People call Mr. Hentoff to the bench to explain the facts. Nat Hentoff

Two things: firstly, this sounds way more like Streets of London than DTTIA. Hmmm. Secondly, I read somewhere that Dylan didn't actually play guitar on this song, he just wasn't that good at that stage of his career (he was only 21 or so, remember). If anyone gives a s*** I'll try to confirm that.
@normw70606 жыл бұрын
A bit late reply, but Dylan was a quite good guitarist in several styles on the self-titled album before this, and before that one too, as the early bootlegs show. As Fred Sokolow points out on another reply in this comment section, there is a video of Bob playing this song in that fingerpicking style.

The irony of the 'capo' cheater idea' is that the song is in E and it hasn't been transposed by the OP, so in fact, by Larry Sanchez's definition, Fred is 'cheating' by NOT using a capo and using the same chords!

am I the only one that's finding this quite hard to learn without a tab?
@NeolardoPwn10 жыл бұрын
Here's a 2 cents from what I've experienced over 17 years of playing guitar: some songs would be harder to learn from a tab and this is one of them, this type of song is easier to learn by chord and then slowly bringing your fingerpicking and arrangement to the level. Anyhow that's how I feel about chord songs like Dylan's.

Sounds nothing like the original. Aside from the missing capo, it's just not the right fingerpicking. It sounds great don't get me wrong, but it sounds like your own cover version, not the Dylan version.
@vodkaone10536 жыл бұрын
He's trying to teach a simple version for students, not some complex arrangement for old pros. It sounds great! He's an excellent teacher. As to sounding like the original, Dylan rarely played a song the same way every time.

🤔One have to be Dylan to sound like Dylan; sing, have fun☺️ I'm always curious about people who trying to copy those kind of music or to sound exactly like the originals... Well, classical music should be played exactly note by note but even there are exceptions. Only my 2 cents 😉
@charlesdarwin72532 жыл бұрын
@@fenderuwe One doesn't have to be Dylan to play the song accurately. I don't have to be Dylan to hear the difference in fingerpicking. As a matter of fact, I didn't have to be Dylan when I figured it out myself.
