Exactly, Scott. That is one reason why I really enjoy your videos... You’re a third party and don’t have an agenda like Chem Guys or some of the others. They’re helpful, but only focus on their products. Your years of knowledge and experience keep us “DIYers” watching. Thanks!!

Love your video and I totally agree on what you said! On hard jobs I even used a 120grid to roughen it up before going on to 400/600/800 . Then I went through from 1200 up to 6000 before buffing and recoating . Mostly on hard used vans i used hard sanding, I had contracts from dhl/ups, but also policecars etc...and those were driven hard all the time..headlights were a disaster sometimes and needed to be clean since they also drive alot at night. And in my experience, starting this rough gave the best results to deepclean the lenses.

a get a question. at the end if you are going to use a wax or a sealant you can sand up to 3000. but if you are going to use a clearcoat you only need to sand up to 1500 to 2000 grit?

(fast) "no way that guy does't know what that means..." - hilarious ! Hey Scott - sending you (whatever it should be called: wishes, prayers, actually sending them if we are so entitled, etc.) Many blessings, for being so selfless, and completely giving of your time (most valuable asset) in these unbelievably thorough, comprehensive, and exhaustive list of topics - videos on your channel. Never a promo, always pure in their intent to do nothing but be helpful. Critical (none of that pol correct crap) of a product or process when they need to be, yet with never any negativity. Gratitude from N. GA (pron: jaw-ja), more specifically N Atlanta.

Ever try heat to smooth out polycarb? Does a nice job on small scratches, and haze. Re-flows the surface nicely. A nice butane/propane heat gun (NOT an open flame, a screen prohibits a flame to pass)

I just watched the first video. Great stuff! My only critique is that maybe you should have mentioned that clouding of the lense, may happen from the inside. Bad gasket around the lamp or a crack in the housing... Polishing the outside will do nothing for the inside. I learned this the hard way! 😄. Cheers! Love your work!

After the initial 800 grit sanding, it's easy to not really get all the rest of the "un/under-sanded" areas that you need to go back over. When done with the initial sanding and the surface is dry, take a simple crayon and circle the areas that need the "extra work" - then re-sand with the 800 grit paper. Don't use a marker like a Sharpie... the solvent in the solvent-based markers might actually begin to "melt" into the plastic layers.

I found that mothers mag and aluminum polish will get you to cleanville with these lens much faster and with no taping off or sanding at all. with a DA and an aggressive cutting pad

@fredslayton
@fredslayton 5 жыл бұрын
You want to “start” at 800. Then wet sand in the other direction using 1000, then rinse with rubbing alcohol, then wet sand with 2000, then 3000. Scratches will be gone. Polish and clear coat to get perfectly restored headlights.

Im gussing its a combo of the paint in the lense + the fact that since it colored its harder to see the light oxidation.

Scott. I'm a new viewer of your video's. When use a buffer to train you say what type of pad, maker and type of solution, amount of solution. Start speed then full speed 4,5 or 6. You need to add amount of pressure your using. You know the amount of pressure to use like the back of your hand. For this beginner it makes the difference thank you. Patrick G

The lens itself is horrible to start with unable to see thought!! Because of its construction!! Secondly I can't think of any restoration kit that the grit size starts at a high as 1000=1500 Grit?? For anyone thinking of restoring there own headlights, The best and tested brand is probably the 3M restoration kit, It takes all the guess work out for you!! Leaving you to concentrate on doing the job, Just follow the instructions properly it's fool proof, And the results are show room finnish,!!!🤔🇬🇧👍
