Ugh! Chest tightness! It's so frustrating. I know. This video talks about that annoying phenomenon where it feels like you can't take full deep breaths due to anxiety. I'll discuss how anxiety-related chest tightness develops and how to address it.
Technique: "Breathing within your bounds"

I totally understand. I have had it for 8 months now. But trust me, once you acknowledge it for what it is, it won't bother you much. It all started when I was in a very stressful period in life. And remember, it's not dangerous, it's just uncomfortable. If it was dangerous then you would not be typing this comment here after going through it for two weeks :). When you notice it coming, try to breathe normally, I know the urge we get to breathe deep, but don't pay attention to it. Just breathe slowly and normally. You'll be fine. Try to distract yourself. You'll be fine. I hope all of us get better soon.

This sounds exactly like what I’ve been experiencing for the last 10 months! Basically, I get this continuous urge to take a full deep breath. But a lot of the time I can’t get that deep breath so then the urge grows and grows until I end up having a panic attack over it. But for some reason once I can get a deep breath it only gives me temporary relief before the urge starts creeping back in again. So it’s like a viscous cycle.

It's worth mentioning that chest tightness also happens from breathing into the chest in general. Most people won't notice it without anxiety present, or a health anxiety that spurs from the tightness itself. Try breathing so your stomach expands, not your chest. It's called diaphragmatic breathing.

I just thought I add to this, I actually had this sudden onset of this fucked up thing called "sighing syndrome".. apparently it's psychological, the main reason science believes it's a psychological issues is because when we sleep, we don't wake up to take a deep breath, because we are "dead asleep" the brain is "OFF". You'll also notice it vanishes if you are overly occupied and busy, take for example, shopping with friends or cooking something that involves you reading and being attentive, etc. You'll notice it's gone, and you'll think "Oh this is all B.S" then once you're back to your regular routine of being at rest or having an unoccupied mind, this fucker shows up! Here's the trick, just accept the sensation, by accept I mean, say "oh well I guess I'll be like this for the rest my life, it is what it is, at least I'd never be told to carry heavy shit", just be humorous about it and accept it, if you need to breath deep, do it, fuck it, if not, great! Just bulldoze right through this bitch, don't even try to ask "what if this is wrong with me" "do I have (insert disease here)". Just accept it , and say that's cool man, I guess that's how I'll breathe from now on! Literally within a few weeks of you just accepting it, your mind will no longer focus on it, it will be desensitized to the though, and guess what? Your breathing will return to normal, until......you think about it again, and back to square 1 we go. It's a constant game, the real trick is to let go of the resistance, permanently!

Hi just stopping by here because I was dealing with this issue 2 weeks ago and I finally feel relieved of it, although it can come and go depending on how I’m feeling but I wanted to share that it CAN go away and it will. For me, I tried everything by going to the doctors and everyone would say nothing was wrong with me so I am heavily praying about it and seeking therapy to help deal with the unknown causes. I believe that body, mind and spirit are all connected so I’ve been doing my best to work more on my mind and spirit to help relieve this issue that no one else seems to understand except for people in these comments and it has helped tremendously. Walking through this with you actually helped get rid of my chest tightness. Thanks a ton man. I didn't really think it'd help but low and behold it did. Hoping the rest of you guys have some success with this. For me it was all about easing into a "one step at a time" narrative he was explaining. Listen to the steps and take one at a time. Shallow breathe in, hit that tight spot and breathe out. I find it more relieving breathing out. Then zone in on that relaxed exhale. Then repeat as many times as necessary. All of this is what was more or less going through my mind while listening to the video. Hope it helps in any way. Most important I think to keep in mind is to let yourself destress at your own pace. If it takes 2 hours that's ok. If it takes 10 mins sweet. Just be ok with whatever. Cheers. ❤️

Your body is resolving issues even when you’re not aware of it. I don’t know about you, but a lot of my life revolves around not feeling uncomfortable feelings. So when I am not focused on not feeling, that’s when my body is free to work on problems without my supervision. That’s when I feel the need to check in only to find discomfort. Definitely work with a therapist on this. Definitely do your stretches and exercise to the best of your ability. If you have any addictions or compulsive behaviors, start looking to shed those This way you can feel the underlying cause.

I'm here to comment on this post because I too had the exact same urge or air hunger. It felt like sighing was the only way to get that " satisfying breath" and when that breath doesn't come the urge to keep trying would kick in until the nervousness would set in that I'm not getting enough air. I wanted to take the time and make this post to say IT DOES AND WILL GO AWAY. A lot of people on this thread have the same issue and you may have come here worried and seeking answers but it is something you can totally rid of WITHOUT needing anxiety medicine. Now that's not to speak for everyone but I personally didn't take an medications and it has gone away...... The only thing that worked for me was realIzing my body was fine and I WAS doing it to myself. Taking these deep breaths over and over is not practical, the body should be breathing without us even realizing, it's when we focus on our breathing so much we hunger for more air. STOP THINKING ABOUT IT. Now that was hard at first, the only way to stop thinking about it is to fight that urge for a deep breath. Fight the urge to "satisfy" that feeling that a yawn or sigh would give us. Tell yourself your not supposed to breathe like that. Breaths should be short and quiet and go unnoticed. Now fighting this urge will be uncomfortable at first, BUT that uncomfortable feeling you'll feel in your chest is the cure ! When you feel that uncomfortable feeling tell yourself you are healing yourself of this annoyance. That's what worked for me. Eventually the urge will loose its power and you'll stop taking deep breaths as this too is unhealthy for the body because you can throw off your oxygen to co2 levels with breathing so hard. Another very important thing to tell yourself is your body has your best interest at heart, your body will do its job correctly, your body wants to work well for you. If you've gone to doctors and they don't find anything chances are it may be anxiety OR some sort of anxiety episode onset this feeling and it's going to take YOU to turn it back off. I also didn't want to believe it was anxiety and when the doctors told me I looked at them like they were crazy. I never ever had anxiety before and had nothing to feel anxious over however I have had some extra stress which unknowingly was causing some anxiety and one morning I woke up flustered and kept trying to take deep breaths and "couldn't" however my body was getting the exact amount of oxygen it needed what I wasn't getting was that satisfying breath... I soon realized this satisfying breath was so crab able because it temporarily stretches your chest/lungs and momentarily relives anxious feelings even anxious feeling that have no physical symptom the urge itself is enough. Think about it. The urge for that breath create a by of anxiety and once you get it it's temporarily relived however it will NEVER go away if you keep feeding it. Think about this... Before it ever started before you ever had this urge when you would go to the doctor lets say for a physical and they check your chest and say "take a deep breath" that deep breath you would take is nothing like the deep "satisfying breath" you keep wanting. You didn't sit in the exam room grasping for deep amounts of air to the point you begin hyperventilating. Focus on that. Once you fight the urge and feel the uncomfortable feeling welcome that feeling ! That's your body forgetting the urge, that's your body and mind becoming balanced again to your pre episode days. The good thing is if it's not medical you can reverse it yourself and I'm here to say IT WILL GO AWAY. Even if you don't get those deep sigh feelings every time you breathe who gives a sh**t your FINE and once you stop hyper focusing on your breathing it goes way.. I wanted to share my story because I too was on these threads a few weeks ago seeking answers and googling every night until I realized I was doing it to myself and I can stop it myself fight the urge and the urge will loose its power and go away. 💯❤️

Guys. Nice to see so many with this issue. Its amazing how it manifests in such similar ways with people. Fortunately (and perhaps unfortunately) I'm 99% sure it's an anxiety related issue. This was something I rejected for a long time because I genuinely didn't think I felt anxious (other than thr anxiety caused by the damn feeling of air hunger which could verge on panic attacks at times). Many have said this and I agree that the worst part is the consistency of it. Ultimately, when i accepted it was anxiety it made sense, as it correlated to my being in a very stressful work environment, along with poor life style habits. For example, I would often stay up much later on the weekend than I would during the weekdays, and drink too heavily and eat more processed foods. Many of u might notice that its a little bit worse following a night of bad sleep a coffee, or a heavy drinking session. If you regularise your sleep routine, eat healthier, and keep moving, it can go a long way to helping alleviate the symptoms. I think we're ultimately just people with a very unusual and stressful response to underlying anxiety. Take it as a nice sign from your heart that lifestyle needs a change maybe! But good luck. It can seriously wear u down mentally.and emotionally.and take a lot.of.pleasure from life

I've had this problem since I am a child. Now I am 30 years old. Today is the day that I learned that I am not alone with this. Wow. No doctor ever has had a clue what was bothering me to breathe. They always said that I have healthy lungs. So I just lived with it. It always occured during stressful times in my life. I also experienced that I had to not take so much care of it in order for the chest tightness to go away. Currently I have it again (we bought a house and have a small child, very stressful) and you talking about it helped me to hear that this strategy works for you also. Hey, I am having this for 3 months now. Came out of the blue. It's not there when I sleep, not there when I am deeply busy in something. I reached a point where I lost 23 pounds in 2 weeks because of this. Now it isn't as bad as before though. Know that you are breathing fine, it's just a fake feeling. The more you pay attention to it the more it will increase. Try to forcefully distract yourself. I know it's very hard. I still struggle but I have more control over it. Know that many people go through this without noticing it or making a big deal out of it. It's only people like us who noticed it once and now wouldn't let go of it face it more. Know that it will be gone without you even noticing it. It's a battle we will win. :). I hope all of us will feel good soon :)

Amy Bodfish you seem to be feeling with anxiety , or nocturnal panic attacks or nightmares . I too feel this way sometimes and it is due to stress or anxiety disorders . You need to assure yourself you are fine and this is temporary sensation and will pass . I know it’s hard to not stress about the feelings you have but I promise they do go away . Think positive and tell yourself you are ok and slow your breathing down . Take a deep belly breath hold it for 5 seconds , purse your lips and exhale slow for 5 seconds then breath normal thru belly . Repeat 3 total times and you will relax . Do not focus on breathing and worry about it your brain controls breathing and breathing is automatic . Assure yourself you are ok and will be ok . I been struggling with anxiety for 15 years . Listen to this vid it’s really helpful . And for peace of mind get a check up with your doc .

I have been dealing with this for 10 years. Over the past three years or so I ignored it to the point where it essentially went away. It hardly bothered me. Weeks went by without my noticing it and I rarely that “rubber band effect” where you’ve taken a deep breath but couldn’t get over the hump. 2 days ago for some reason my mind latched onto my breathing again and I started obsessing that “it’s back” and as a result it got worse like when it first began 10 years ago. I’m back to being bothered constantly. Found your video and it’s refreshing to find someone talking about THIS EXACT thing. It is obsessive neurosis focused on breathing. That’s what the doctor at the Mayo Clinic diagnosed it as 10 years ago. You are right that the only cure is full on NOT CARING. Accept that you will live with it for the rest of your life. Breathe normally and ignore the feeling of needing breath and after a number of months or years, you’ll notice it less. Now I need to take your and my own advice and work on ignoring it and not caring. Panic or caring at all just makes it worse. Remind yourself you ARE healthy, you CAN get enough breath. You will live.

Relieved to hear I’m not alone in this! It’s been 3 months after the hectic stressful period in my life ended that I was able to see improvements but not fully back to normal so I assume it takes time for the body to realise it’s not in stress anymore. I’m looking forward to feeling better and better as I be more at peace and change my old negative obsessive thoughts patterns . Walks, yoga, pranayam, stretches, doing more things that make me happy, not trying to be perfect , taking time to rest has helped me so much ! Not being afraid of this symptom is also super important just be easy and let it pass one day at a time.

If youre at home, like me, jump right into a little cardio session of five+ mins. Gets the breath on track. Gets the mind off it, and you'll lose weight. That unfullfilling yawn is beyond annoying . I found this helps me 'get the yawn' most of the time when I need it.... 1. Pull shoulders way back to open lungs 2. Lean forward drastically. Imagine sitting at your desk with your arms out in front of you and your face staring down 3. Keep the mouth closed while having that urge. Let it build up in the throat 4. When the urge is very strong, start inhaling through the nose, and near the top of the inhale, open the mouth for that quick, satisfying, full breath 5. Sometimes, I shake my head violently back and forth, as if Im saying "no" during this, and it helps me "catch it"

To everyone who is feeling uncomfortable: I totally understand. I have had it for 8 months now. But trust me, once you acknowledge it for what it is, it won't bother you much. It all started when I was in a very stressful period in life. And remember, it's not dangerous, it's just uncomfortable. If it was dangerous then you would not be typing this comment here after going through it for weeks :). When you notice it coming, try to breathe normally, I know the urge we get to breathe deep, but don't pay attention to it. Just breathe slowly and normally. You'll be fine. Try to distract yourself. You'll be fine. I hope all of us get better soon. Edit: Also pay attention to your diet, I have noticed that the feeling also comes if I eat anything that causes me GERD or excessive burps.

Not a medical person but I have suffered from shortness of breath usually a few hours or a day after vigorous exercise. I was given some advice from a doctor that told me that I was suffering from over oxgenation. Seemingly when the blood gets over oxygenated by only a small amount then the body can get confused and it actually thinks it is slightly under oxygenated this causes the body to try to compenate by taking ever deeper breaths. This can last for several hours. To get rid of this the doctor told me instead of taking deeper breaths take really shallow breaths and after 15 mins the oxygen level in the blood will stabalise. I have done this on dozens of occasions and it's a real chore for 10 to 15 mins , every sinue of your being tells you to breath deeper and you have to fight it. After 10 minutes I can feel it completely subsiding within the space of a few seconds after which I feel just brilliant. He told me the name of the condition (sadly I forget what it was) and he told me it was a very little know but quite prevalent condition which seems to be true as I can't seem to find any mention of it online.

fight the urge to take really deep breaths instead do the opposite take really shallow breaths. Set a timer and do this for 15 minutes. Your whole body will be screaming at you to yawn or take a deep breath if it gets too much then take a longer shallow breath but not a full one and continue till your 15 mins is up. Not a mediacal doctor but I was advised to do this by my doctor and works everytime for me.

Won't breathing in short breaths at a fast rate like that cause hyperventilation which then leads to the feeling of not getting enough air and more panicking?
@AJBCounseling
@AJBCounseling 6 жыл бұрын
It might if the short breaths are at too fast of a rate. If that's happening then you might need to slow down the breathing rate. The whole point of taking shorter breaths is so that we are not fighting that resistance that we feel when we have chest tightness. Experiencing that resistance is often what re-feeds our chest tightness. Now, because we're taking shorter breaths, in order to get enough air so that we can exist comfortably, it might mean that we have to pick up our rate of breathing. The rate of breathing I showed in this video was just an example. You'll have to figure out your comfortable rate of breathing, while at the same time, keeping your breath-depth at a level that does not lead to you experiencing the "rubber band" effect (the resistance of chest tightness).
@AJBCounseling
@AJBCounseling 6 жыл бұрын
I also just noticed you mentioned panicking. This video doesn't address panic attacks. It speaks more to a situation where you have this nagging chest-tightness that just follows you all day long. I'll make some videos on dealing with panic in the future.
@laynamonk4023
@laynamonk4023 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply. I think I get what you mean. But how long should we be breathing this way?
@AJBCounseling
@AJBCounseling 6 жыл бұрын
I think I need to explain why this technique works in the first place. It will also indirectly answer your question. The reason why this technique often works is because it offers a way to accept that you have chest-tightness and that you're not going to fight it anymore. A lot of times, chest-tightness continues to exist because we are fighting it. When we're able to say "I don't care about this chest-tightness. It can be there if it wants to", our chest-tightness often goes away. The whole point of this breathing technique is to help you find a more comfortable way of existing with your chest-tightness; to help you find a way to have your chest-tightness, and be okay with it being there. It's aimed at helping you to shift your attitude about your chest-tightness away from "omg i hate this!" to "meh, it's fine." So, how long to breath like this? As long as it takes to change your attitude towards your chest-tightness. I would give the exercise at least a day. But! Keep in mind, that we're ultimately targeting your attitude about having chest-tightness. So, if you find that sticking to this exercise is having no effect, then I would focus more on finding other ways to just accept the chest-tightness.. to not be bothered by it... Because our being bothered by it is what often times maintains it. I hope that helps! If you find other ways to accept your chest-tightness and it goes away, please come back and let everyone know! I am definitely curious about other ways of getting there, and I'm sure other ways exist!

Dealing with this for 3 months and yes, you are correct. I experience this 24*7 and sometimes with excessive yawning. If you need proof that nothing is happening to you do this: whenever you feel the urge to take in that deep breath, resist it and breathe normally for 5 more minutes, eventually you will be able to get it. But then it starts all over again after 3-4 minutes. Same with excessive yawning. It's not dangerous but it's so uncomfortable and annoying. I hope we all get rid of this soon

I worked on it for 1 year everyday, creating new Nero pathways with positive affirmations every time it would happen, also detoxing the body with black seed extract pills, zeolite and coffee enemas. Taking Magnesium glycinate, B1 complex, getting sunlight and feeling a sense of purpose, good company and prayer.

I love meditation but lately I'm having a rough time in my life so meditation should help a lot but actually, when I try meditating now, I just feel like I can't breathe and I can feel how tight my chest is, it's almost scary..I don't even have anxiety or something but I suffered from depression in my earlier teens but I don't feel like that's a part of me anymore. However, the breathing problems always come back from time to time, but sometimes when I don't even feel bad? I'm confused. Do you have an idea what that might be? But anyway, thank you very much for the video, it helped a bit right now☺

@AJBCounseling 6 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say without knowing you personally. However, it does sound like you're having a stress response that is out of your awareness. I know of 2 possible causes for this: A) Signal Anxiety (we're trying to suppress a feeling. The outcome of suppressing the feeling leads to anxiety). Sometimes we react with a stress response (e.g. tensions, like chest tightness) because there is another feeling that we are trying to not experience (Sadness? Anger? Guilt? etc). We can't stop a feeling from rising. If it's there, it's going to be expressed one way or another. It could get expressed by actually feeling that feeling, or through anxiety and tension. I covered signal anxiety in a video on neck tension and tension headaches part 1: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raiZc42rmdGferM. While this video talks mostly about neck tension and tension headaches, it applies to a whole range of other issues involving signal anxiety. If you capture the general idea of what I'm talking about, you might be able to apply it to your own situation. OR B) Recycling of Anxiety (automated anxious response to anxiety). This happens when we automatically react with anxiety to any symptoms, however small, of anxiety. This often means that we simply react, and are not aware of our reaction, to our anxiety. It's just like driving a car-- when you drive a car you don't necessarily have to think about everything you're doing. You're just driving. Sometimes we become so trained at responding to things in an anxious way that we just do it without becoming aware of doing so. I covered this scenario in Neck Tension & Tension Headaches part 2: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npvOq4uYYtBjldE. Just like the first video I mentioned, this video was aimed at neck tension and tension headaches, but the concept still applies to any other way that recycled anxiety might show itself. This video on chest-tightness also covers a specific situation of "Recycling of Anxiety." Here, I was offering one little trick to "get around" our tendency to react to anxiety with more anxiety. OR C) Denial of a Fear. I haven't covered this in a video, but there are scenarios where we become afraid of something, but we deny it to ourselves. We'll pretend that the concern doesn't exist. However, our subconscious will not allow us to truly forget it. It will keep reminding us of itself through anxious tension. I might make a video on this some time. Let me know if any of the videos I just shared are helpful to you. If not, also let me know what happened!

I’m 50 years old ...I get that feeling where I feel like I can’t get a full breath in. As is when I breathe, I’m doing so with all my might but can’t get the ‘muscle or lung relax sensation “ when a full breath would normally come in. Then every tenth or fifteenth breath or so it clicks and the lungs relax. I’m then fine for a moment as my body relaxes from getting the whole breath and then just as I think it’s done, it starts again. It’s not even as if if “worried “ about anything or even stressed. I’ll be just lying in bed watching tv and it comes out of nowhere fo no reason.
@AJBCounseling
@AJBCounseling 2 жыл бұрын
Does yawning help you get a full breath? If so, then this is stress-based. Sometimes people get stuck in a loop: They end up stressing over having to deal with this tight-chest thing, and as a result, their chest just gets tighter. You won't live with this permanently, but try mentally preparing yourself as though you are going to live with this permanently. This forces you to accept it just being there. When you truly accept it just being there, you won't be bothered by it as much, and as a result, you'll give yourself a chance to relax about it and let the tensions melt away. Good luck!!
