Spot-on about how the approach at Adelaide needed to be different than at the other grounds. India narrowly escaped being beaten there by Bangladesh as well. Even more surprising was that Rohit wanted to bat first if he had won the toss. It shows that India are still stuck in the old mindset of having runs on the board in a knockout game, despite not having the bowling firepower for a flat surface. Defending a par total might have worked at the MCG or SCG, which had some assistance for the bowlers. The semi-final result was a fair picture of where the two teams stand with regard to their approach on flat batting tracks.

India def has a problem with Too many players, each player having too little oppurtunity to play, so half the time players get picked who either: 1. Haven't played for a while, or inconsistently(Pant, DK) 2. Lack Agression at the top(Rohit and KL fell way short in powerplay) 3. Injuries abound, the likes of Jadu and Bumrah were out of commission 4. Overreliance on Kohli, and whenever Sky clicks(they are really the only 2 players who batted the entire tournament, with KL clicking like once and Pandya click a couple times as well) 5. Lack of Overseas Experience

@@saoirsedeltufo7436 Axar didn't really perform this tournament, Jaddu would have probably done slightly better at the very least, but Bumrah is pretty big, since India's pace bowling attack is basically reliant on him and him alone. Credit where credit is due, Arshdeep was a solid replacement, but still any team would still want their main bowler in. Chahar, Rohit, KL Rahul post-ipl(who popped of in the ipl, and was in a good form), Harshal Patel(who was brilliant b4 the injury), Sky post-ipl(this injury may have had the inverse effect of harshal and got him to the form of his life) I just said those as examples, there are probably more but I can't remember off the top of my head

Everyone is out for Dravid's neck but I think he is best thinker of all right now. He realised that it's not that kind of a world cup where you can go slam bang from the first ball. He did make them play slam bang in bilaterals though. His only two flaws were: 1. Not going back to the slam bang approach in Adelaide as it was a flat pitch. 2. Not promoting Pant in semi final to counter spinners.

India have the most players, the biggest demographic and most money, but they have the least amount of innovative thought, their board seems stuck 15 years ago, whereas the rest of the world are trying new things to suit their skill sets and come up with game plans that makes sense. They should dominate the world cricket scene, but there’s a level of delusion where they think simply bigger is better. The IPL is hugely successful but the cricket is the same every year, and their home grown talent doesn’t travel the world to even try to expand their horizons in t20s.

@@mayavi93 the BCCI bans Indian international players from playing overseas T20 tournaments. Perhaps this needs to change? India 10-20 years ago went through changes in structure and mindset that improved it immensely (fast bowling academy, A team tours, IPL, governance, women's cricket). This team has not won anything Since 2011 WC bar champions trophies which no other countries care about. If India wins ODIs by a 2:1 margin but no trophies, all we are saying is that if they aren't winning the tournaments, they have to figure out what has gone wrong. They need to look at themselves in the mirror to get better. This also applies to anyone who isnt winning, dont take it personal.

9:28 this graphic shows, though slightly off topic I guess, that New Zealand dominates 50 over cricket. We don't get enough tests and our T20 side is hit n miss, but we really shine in the middle ground. Which makes a lot of sense given our "star" players. We don't have ferocious pace bowlers that could knock over whole teams quickly or master blasters who consistently put on 200 in 20 overs. We have good test players but no world class spinner to really close out games in the 4th & 5th day. We have decent hitters who take 40-50 balls to wind up, and decent seamers who strike after a few overs of building pressure in tandems. Interesting graphic that confirms a theory, in my mind anyway.
@theLonelyBandit6984
@theLonelyBandit6984 Жыл бұрын
India with no world class spinners, I am guessing you have spectacles. You actually need to pick the spinner to have a chance, and for picking the spinner, you first need to guess whether the pitch will turn on day 4/5 on first morning, that ain't easy mate.
@RatelHBadger
@RatelHBadger Жыл бұрын
@@theLonelyBandit6984 my point is, New Zealand spinner selection is garbage. We have a once in a lifetime performance in Ajaz Patel. Takes 10 wickets in an innings, never plays another test in a year (and counting). Our top selections are either Ish Sodhi or Mitch Santner, all who are handy and get wickets now & then or tie up an end, but they don't regularly bag 5-fors like Harbijan, Warne, Lyon, Kumble, of 15 odd years ago or even a Jadeja or Ashwin. If you want to be a top test side, you HAVE to have a top class spinner. Not just 3 screaming seamers, an all-rounder and a spinner that can bat a bit too. Notice I mentioned only Indian or Australian spinners, because they have been top class for at least 20 years at test level, a few dips along the way but always come back strong. Us Kiwis, at test form anyway, have our peak moments, then fade again because one year maybe the conditions suited our seamers and we tore sides apart.

The the most hottest of takes, but the attrition rates of players might be an issue. I remember Shivam Dube being hyped as an excellent cover for Hardik. Then came the Venkatesh Iyer hype machine. Neither are close to the Indian team now. Same with the opening (batters and bowlers). Maybe if we were to nurture a select few of these talents we would be better off.

Great analysis - spot on . Case in point india vs England 2019 World Cup. Chasing a big total India lost the first wicket early and you could the Double anchoring . It left the rest of the batting too much to do . They fell short by 30odd but were never in the chase . It is like the top order does not trust their own attacking game ( or that of the batters to follow ).

Excellent analysis as always. I'm new to cricket so I was talking to my friend from India about the struggles India seem to have and , at least to my newbie eyes, it seems like it's the inclination to do the safe things and fail rather than try something different/new and possibly fail. And by safe things I mean same tactics and line-ups. Maybe that's because then you can shift blame elsewhere easier when you follow the same recipe and it doesn't work? If you do something new then it's easier to point the finger at you for the mistake.

Spot on. Safety first is part of the culture. I think most people would prefer a guy who they can bank on. So, they'd prefer an anchor who can bat steadily over someone like Livingston who can take the game away from the opposition. Also, there are social and cultural reasons which make it difficult to drop senior players. For example england dropped a great of the game like Root from their t20 set up. That would never happen in India.

It's all psychological. Indian cricketers of current generation are just not mentally strong if I am being brutally honest. They threw away 2 sure wins against Bangladesh. But in the dead rubber, they played fearlessly like they should regardless of whether they are playing an ICC tournament or a bilateral series. That's what separates Australia of 2003-07 from all other mediocre teams.

Absolutely Brilliant Analysis! When Not taking wickets in the middle overs is definitely an issue, the Larger issue is how we approach the early overs of an innings! We, Indian team are way to away from the Modern cricket altogether. We didn't understand the concept of PP & make a mockery of it every single white ball game. Rahul/Rohit/Kohli or Rohit/Dhawan/Kohli cannot be the Top 3 of the team. Stuck with one approach & defending it every time a question is asked, is not a good sign for Team India. We need Attacking players like Prithvi / Ishan / Surya (Atleast 2 of Top 3) on Top 3 when it comes to ODI & Broad change of Culture / Approach in white Ball games. In any case, with current approach, we are already going to 3/30, 4/50 in the knockout games. Gill / Ruturaj falls in the same category as Rahul / Rohit. Ruturaj had a great VHT trophy. His approach worked brilliantly in all other games. But Come to Final, it massively back fired. It was a very bad innings in the start. Sheldon Jackson's innings proved to be a winning approach in Knock out games. Hopefully someone from Indian Management sees this world chunk of episodes on whats going wrong. Kudos Jarred!!!

I think India's problem is the "it's just another game" psychology they've been trying to embody. I don't think that approach works. No matter how many times you repeat the mantra to yourself, subconsciously you know it's a big game and you end up playing safer than you would normally. And because the management wants to use this just another game psychology, they probably don't admonish the players at all after failing in key matches. Only Kohli seemed to have that "It's not just another game, it's the fricking world cup" determination in his eyes.

@@jimmy_xi9342 Objectively every game is just another game whether that's the world cup final. But I'm talking about the psychological approach. India's approach has been that we'll treat big games as just another game and not let the pressure affect us, but I don't think that works. Subconsciously everyone feels the pressure. And in trying to treat the match as just another game, they look as if they aren't too determined to win. Much too casual. If anything goes off script for India, it looks like they give up and say, well, today wasn't our day, even before the game is over.

From the Outside India should be England like dominant. The insane amount of young players coming through each year. You now has the bowling to win in SENA countries. It is just that stutter type of play. Starting slowers with Both Rohit and KL basically the same player. You need atleast one not two. Then Kohli around the same. I think with Kohli @3 you can afford double attacking openers. The batting at the world cup only SKY is Ideal with Kohli playing anchor. Probably the best is to rip the batting apart.

After losing the first ODI to Bangladesh in the ongoing series I had a similar thought, that after 2013 India has choked at almost all the ICC events. India does have a lot of great talent right now but the team does not jell at the most crucial stages. Also, the fitness of the current Indian team is better than the team which won 2011 World Cup. Considering both these factors, one would assume India to win at least a major ICC tournament (in recent years). The current pace-attack is the best that India has ever had. But, sadly apart from Bumrah and Shami, there is no other fast bowler who has got consistent opportunities. Also, while focusing on pace, we have lost the opportunity to groom the spinners. The Indian top 3 (VK, Dhawan, Rohit) are not the same force anymore which they used to be from 2013-2017. Dhawan, KL, and Rohit lacks consistency. India needs to give chance to some new faces at the top. Some of the key players get stuck with the injury at the wrong time, e.g., Jadeja, Bhuvi, Bumrah, D Chahar. Also, apart from Hardik Pandya, we don't have a fast-bowling all-rounder (Thakur does not get many chances). We also failed to bank on some of the youngsters (from 2018 U19 WC). The likes of Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti should have got some opportunities to play for India. Unlike, Australia, Pakistan, and South Africa, Indian fast-bowlers cannot swing the bat to give a few valuable runs at the end (at least in the limited overs) because of these the top and middle order needs to be more conservative. In a way, I agree with Wasim Akram that IPL is somewhat responsible for downfall of many youngsters but its not the money part. They have to deal with a lot of pressure and expectations and because of IPL they might not be able to focus much on the Domestic matches.

How can Indian players, especially the backbones in domestic cricket, be expected to improve without playing outside of India? Take the couple of players who play in England's county system, there really aren't that many examples of domestic talent from there getting exposed to different conditions around the world. I've always said this: protect your core players for the IPL to increase the value of the product, but why aren't the 2nd XI (or lower) playing overseas? It boggles the mind.

Rohit has always stuck firm by the Mumbai Indians model of getting runs on the board and defending it. However, the MI team is catered to playing this style of cricket with the top order looking to establish a stable base and the lower order coming in with the artillery to do the heavy hitting for the last 5-6 overs. Start off with 3 pacers looking to take wickets in the power play, managing overs 7-15 with the sole purpose of slowing down the run rate and then letting Bumrah do his thing at the death. By and large that was very successful for them and its obvious that this is the template Rohit wants his India team to play with. The problem is that the players at their disposal are not suited to the roles asked of them. India are too top order heavy and Rohit, Rahul and Kohli are all anchors and innings builders. The firepower only comes in at no 4 with SKY and ends with him too since the likes of Pant, Hooda, Karthik and the multitude of false all rounders they've tried in the lower middle order are by and large massive failures. That leaves you basically relying on a Hardik Pandya miracle or SKY carrying you home half the time. Sticking by the old guard of Shami and Bhuvi in T20s makes no sense whatsoever looking at their performances, thank them for their services and move them on from the shortest format. Stop persisting with mediocre dross like Chahar, Thakur and Avesh. Arshdeep and Harshal should be considered no. 2 and 3 in the pace department for now, behind Bumrah. INVEST IN UMRAN MALIK. He has the X FACTOR and can be something special if nurtured properly. Don't let him set foot anywhere near the NCA, Steyn is the best mentor he'll get and outside of the IPL get him some experience down under and in the County Cricket scene. Finally, just two words to end things. LEG SPINNER. Chahal is one of the most street smart bowlers in white ball cricket. India do not have a single wicket taking spinner so its even more of a farce that he constantly gets snubbed. Didn't play a single game in this T20 world cup and wasn't even included in the squad in the last one. Just bizarre.

Main reasons for India's monumental failures 1.Caste discrimination 2.North south lobbying 3.Superstars who play the game instead of better cricketers 4.Conservative approach at the start by the openers.(worst run rate in Odis; sach-sehwag used to start with all guns blazing; neither Rohit nor Dhawan or Rahul do that.They play to score runs in a slower pace to improve their averages)

@@aniruddhamungekar8663 I watched the video and I am very aware on how they are doing and entitled to my opinion. They keep winning bilaterals but fail stupendously when it matters the most. What’s the point winning a bilateral if you can’t win the World Cup. That too they have been losing more often than before against SA, Eng, and NZ. Even took the loss today against BD lol and these weren’t even high scoring games and they were at a vantage point for most of the game as well. Even on a logarithmic scale or investment on cricket per capita, i bet BCCI is way above any cricket board as shown in the video. There is no excuse for failing on the big stage after having players like Kohli, Rohit, Dhawan, and Pandya who have combined played more matches than other teams combined.

Sloppy terminology. Win loss means nothing. If the intent was to state ratio of wins to losses, state that clearly. The first graph was confusing. I think the y axis was Strike Rate minus 100 (or run a ball). It was not stated clearly.

I think the reason for the huge gap in win ratio between India and AUS/ENG could be because India play SL/WI more often

Thats a very wrong perception. India actually never play against SL any time in last 4-5 years. It was in 2017 when Kohli just took captaincy- when India last played an ODI series against SL. India didn't play a single Test series between 2017-2022 vs SL. In 2022 Feb India played a 2 match test series after 5 years.

The core problem is that there was Dhoni before and there has not been any Dhoni for some time
@RatelHBadger

There have been plenty of batsmen who could be capable of stepping into the role of closer, controlling a run chase in the last 20 overs of an ODI or keeping the scoring rate high in a T20. Just no one has, they just stick to the "knock it about a bit" tactic. Hoping that someone will kick on in the last few over and go at 15's. Which is great when it happens, but shouldn't be relied on as a team tactic.

Dhoni lost 5 T20 WCs, 1 ODI WC and 1 CT as captain. So having Dhoni doesn't give any further advantage. Basically He captained India in 10 ICC events and won 3. Thats not a big achievement given the opportunities he got as a captain. No other captain has captained more than 4.(Kohli captained 3,Rohit captained 1,Ganguly Captained 2 and so on.)

Why? For T20 WC 2022: 1. Culture of selfishness: Most Indian batsmen are and have been selfish bastards. Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dhoni (Avg 37, Strike rate 126 in T20Is - highly, highly over-rated), Kohli, Rahul...they ALL play or played for their Averages. Except Yadav and Pandya none of them are capable of batting unselfishly, although I feel Sharma atleast tries to. 2. Team selection a) Dinesh Karthik - Capable of batting unselfishly, but ALWAYS gives a chance in his first few balls before he can have an impact. Most good teams will and have taken those early chances. Case in point - Stop/Start career. b) Rishabh Pant - Good against sub-standard IPL quality bowlers on smal IPL grounds. Not good, fit or strong enough to regularly clear 70+m boundaries against good international quality attacks. Case in point - Strike rate under 127 (and avg under 23) in T20Is. C) (Yes, Capital C) R Ashwin ! He is a coward who bowls darts to left handers and non-disguised carrom-balls to right handers. Anyone and everyone knows what he is going to bowl...and everyone knows what he is going to bowl when you go after him. Ashwin has been impotent in white ball cricket since the day ICC banned chucking the doosra, back in 2014. Infact he is pretty impotent in Test cricket too, unless the pitch is a snakepit (or a cabbage patch). He is a liability in the field. Manjrekar once called Jadeja a 'bits-and-pieces' cricketer...but Ashwin is an even worse one. How did he get into India's T20I WC team is the mystery of the decade. d) Continuous selection of trundlers like Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and S Thakur, although Thakur can atleast biff a few. 3. No Jasprit Bumrah. But to be honest, wouldn't have made ANY difference to the end result. For T20 WC 2021: See above. For previous WCs....comments in the next episode.

Against SA, India were shown their place....and against England....India were REALLY shown their place. Kohli, just like Dhoni is a selfish bastard who only plays for his average. On a good batting pitch he is a liability (just like Tendulkar was for MI). The longer he stays, the more resources he wastes. On a 180 SR pitch against Eng....he scored at 125.
