Regarding the "thin wrench" used to remove the nut securing the inner end of the tie rod, I used a monkey wrench, aka slip nut wrench, although any parallel jaw wrench with wide opening will do. To allow the jaws to grip the narrow flats, I interposed a 1" length of 1/4" diameter metal rod between the flats and the wrench jaws. This gave me the clearance to turn the wrench. Although I didn't, I suppose you could tape the metal rods to the jaws of the wrench.

I have a question regarding the steering rack. Is the rack supposed to have grease on the teeth? mine does not and so am unsure if it should have or not. in advance, thanks for any answer.

I have a 2008 x3 Si and I hit the curb the other day cause a car pulled out in front of me and I had to move out of the way. Both tires on the right side hit but the back tire hit so hard that it bent the control arm. I had the control arm replaced, normally I do this myself but had no time so had to take it to the shop. When they went to do the alignment they're telling me that the tie rod on the passengers side won't go in all the way and that the steering is off by about 4 mm. Is this related to me hitting the curb or just typical problem on older x 3's? If not what could cause this and how do I fix it? Do I need to replace the entire rack and pinion? They told me the tie rod was not cross threaded nor stripped out but something is keeping it from going all the way. Any advice? Thank you

Quick question. Would I be able to get away with zip tying new boots onto the rack? Instead of re using those clamps. That is, if they're reusable.
@bavarianautosport10 жыл бұрын
We've all used zip-ties at one time or another. Clamps are best, but the ties can work.

what if the tie rod bolt spins freely when trying to remove the nut on top?
@bavarianautosport9 жыл бұрын
shyboy2cute Some tie rods have an external hex or an internal Allen key recess at the top of the threaded pin, so you can hold the pin from turning. If there is none, place a jack under the joint and apply upward pressure with the jack to press the tapered pin into the eye. this will keep it from turning.

You need to take off the nut completely first.
